Nothing from BC Ferries yet, but the Coastal Inspiration apparently has had a hard landing at Duke Point prior to her 3:15 PM sailing.
Currently, the 3:15 PM and 5:45 PM are cancelled and the New West is supposedly sailing out of Departure Bay for her 5:45 sailing...

It will be interesting to see how long it takes to get both the CI & the terminal back in service.

From CBC: The usual sensationalist ranting from the Province: From Global: Maybe BCFS should alter their pre-docking announcements to tell all passengers to sit down and remain seated until the ship has come to a complete stop.

Maybe BCFS should alter their pre-docking announcements to tell all passengers to sit down and remain seated until the ship has come to a complete stop. Do you seriously think there are enough seats aboard the Queen of Alberni for all the passengers to sit down? Same deal on all the other old Cs. People would be sitting down on the outside decks... Isn't this great? Right at the start of the holiday season, too. I think we may have to go the Sunshine Coast route up to Comox this Christmas, unless they can completely fix the terminal in the next week.

It will be interesting to see how long it takes to get both the CI & the terminal back in service. Yes it will be interesting. This will no doubt put a heavier burden on Route 2, if the CI is out for any length of time. On the bright side, the Queen of Alberni is supposed to be back on Friday. But Queen of New Westminster is the ferry actually replacing the Alberni, so I wonder how they'll sort it all out if they have to. So it would seem that they'll have a spare ship by the weekend though, if they need it.

Here's an update... UPDATED: BC Ferries Coastal Inspiration suffers hard landing at Duke PointBC Ferries vessel MV Coastal Inspiration experienced a hard landing at the Duke Point Ferry Terminal Tuesday afternoon. The ferry corporation confirmed the hard landing at the terminal located south of Nanaimo. The vessel was re-directed to Departure Bay in order to allow the vehicles to offload. Foot passengers were offloaded at the Duke Point terminal. BC Ferries spokeswoman Deborah Marshall confirmed to Global News that the ramp and one of the doors on the vessel sustained significant damage. Marshall said the Duke Point terminal sustained considerable damage and will be closed indefinitely until BC Ferries facilitates repairs. In the meantime, service will be operated out of Departure Bay terminal. “What it means to customers is anybody leaving the Nanaimo area or coming to the Nanaimo area will be using our Departure Bay terminal,” said Marshall. “So we will have service going from Departure Bay to both Tsawwassen and Horseshoe Bay.” It is still not clear what caused the vessel to hard land. Passenger Angela Smith e-mailed the newsroom from the ferry. She said the captain gave a warning of “Hold on!” before two impacts she described as moderate. Marshall confirmed a passenger and crew member were injured in the incident and are said to be suffering from "soft tissue injuries” that are not considered to be significant. BC Ferries last experienced a "hard landing" on its Queen of Coquitlam vessel while docking at Departure Bay last month. For the last five minutes of a sailing, car pax belong sitting down in their own cars. The only people who would need seats on the ferry are foot passengers. "We are ten minutes from arrival. BC Ferries values your safety. For your safety in the event of a hard landing, please return to your vehicles and buckle up. Foot passengers, please assemble at ____ and sit down until the ferry has come to a complete stop." QoNW creeping around Newcastle Island at 8kts. CI on the move from DUK to DPB also at 8 knots.

From BC Ferries on Twitter: The Q of Coquitlam will replace The Coastal Inspiration for tomorrow sailing out of DEP Bay on the regular posted sched for DUK-TSA. ^tc

QoNW docked at DPB berth #3 at 1812. Overall delay 1h due in part to earlier mechanical problems at TSA.
CI docked at DPB berth #2, unaided, at 1822 to unload passengers who boarded at 1245.
BCFS must have been pretty confident that whatever caused CI's hard landing at DUK has been corrected and that the risk of bashing up DPB #2 (again) was minimal.

At least seven people have been injured in hard landings since August 2010.

QoNW creeping around Newcastle Island at 8kts. CI on the move from DUK to DPB also at 8 knots. I'm back from 2 hours in the cold at Departure Bay Beach with my camera & tripod. I'll post photos in the various ship threads soon. One thing I noticed (and I'll see what my photos show) is that it looked like the Inspiration was still loaded with vehicles when she arrived at Departure Bay to unload. This was approx 5:30pm. - it that's the case, then those vehicles were from the 12:45pm sailing from Tsawwassen. A five hour tour....

Queen of Coquitlam has just been moved from Departure Bay's berth 1 to berth 3. Coastal Inspiration is on her way from Berth 2 to berth 1. The Queen of Oak Bay is slowly approaching Departure Bay, delaying her arrival until this little ballet of berth changes is complete.

CI has been moved to DPB berth #1. Coquitlam is now in berth #2 but spent a few hours tonight in berth #3.
The travelcenter shows CI back in service on the 22nd and the Alberni taking over from the QoNW on the 23rd. Your guess is as good as mine whether the CI can be repaired that quickly.

doubtful she can be repaired that quick, my guess is if its a door on the CI that needs work, count on it being out for at least a month

On a brighter note, it'll be good to see the New West operating out of Departure Bay again like she did with the Nanaimo and Burnaby back in the 70's.

Well they could pull a similar move to what they did aboard the Celebration when her bow doors got crunched. Just have people pull around and only use doors at one end of the ship. That would take some bear off of the other ships for the holiday season.

Deborah Marshall was on the radio a half hour ago and summarized the incident. Terminal damage was to the apron, ramp, wingwall and tower, with ship damage to the link arm on the port door, requiring a replacement part from Germany. The terminal is out of service for months, not weeks. Injuries to about twelve people; whole thing supposedly an electrical component malfunction.
This would certainly rank up there with the worst dock damage in their history. Too bad they never built the second berth. Silver lining aspect, I guess, is the fact that Departure Bay was upgraded a while back- it will be a busy spot for the next while.
Happy times for the folks up Brechin Road, with ferries loading at 5am and unloading at a quarter to one at night.

Electrical failure caused Duke Point ferry crashVANCOUVER/CKNW AM980 Terry Schintz | Email news tips to Terry 12/21/2011 BC Ferries say the Duke Point ferry terminal is going to be out of service "for months" after the vessel Coastal Inspiration came in for a crash landing yesterday afternoon. BC Ferries spokesperson Deborah Marshall says an "electronic failure in a control system" was the cause of the accident. She adds, “the terminal was heavily damaged, the berthing structure sustained damage, the ramp was actually pushed forward, we also need to look at the tower abutment, so there is quite a bit of repair that needs to be done." She also says about a dozen people suffered minor injuries. There are no reports of onboard vehicles being damaged.

Similar to what we've done with other major BCFerries incidents (QotN sinking, Q'Nanaimo hard landing, etc), here is a separate thread for our discussion and news and speculation about the impact of the Dec.20, 2011 hard-landing at Duke Point.
- and to also discuss the related logistics of running 2 routes from Departure Bay.
- also to discuss the ship repairs to the C'Inspiration.
I've transferred existing posts here to this new thread.
--------------------- Photos should still go to the specific ship or terminal thread (because we all like that enduring effect of the specific thread ;D)
