Capital was always a great place to go "investigating". I have a belt clip coin changer from the CPR I got there many years ago. Not sure why I bought it but Im glad I did. Just was saying to my partner we really need to go there next time we get to the coast. She has never been there but wants to go investigating herself.

- Does anyone known if the CP BCCSS naming-scheme was just to attach any female name to the Princess prefix? Or were they named with specific real-life princesses in mind? The answer, I believe, is that CP did indeed mostly just attach various female names to the Princess prefix. It would be interesting to track down the people behind the names for all of CP's Princess fleet. I am thinking that it would be possible to find most if not all of this info in one or the other of Robert Turner's books on the BCCS Service. I do believe that few, if any of the ships, were named directly after royal princesses. The P Victoria was named for the city, not directly for Queen Victoria, who was deceased by the time the vessel came along. Many vessels, it seams, were named for female relatives of CP executive types. Examples include the 1925 twins P Marguerite & P Kathleen which were both apparently named for the same person - Marguerite Kathleen Shaughnessy - who was the daughter of one time CPR Czar Lord Thomas Shaughnessy. PS - I think this 'aside' is of interest to me and others, but perhaps should be moved to a more appropriate thread for further discussion.

Queen Victoria was of course a princess before she was a queen, and boats such as the 'May, 'Adelaide, 'Beatrice, 'Sophia, and others, also commemorated members of the British royal family, alive or deceased. I guess they didn't have their monarchy handbook handy the day they named the Princess Royal.

Some of the best Black Ball brochures were done up in the 1930's as well. Very cool! Meanwhile, this is what becomes of an old Princess--the Princess Joan, remodeled and sailing for her Greek owners as the Hermes.

I have a framed reprint of a CPR poster I would guess is from the 1940's, hanging in my room. It certainly is one of my favorites from that era. Here is an image of the poster.

"Edutainment" is a word we should be using. We are educating (and entertaining in a way) the world about our rich maritime history with a wealth of photos and our knowledge of ships and ferries as well as other things in the libraries of our Forward Lounge.

I'm still pulling the notes together for the statistics and brief history of the vessels. So far I've just put on the vessels I have postcards/ephemera/slides of. I've just snagged a postcard of the first Princess Patricia, so when that arrives I'll be adding her to the site.

A wartime restriction that we'd have some problems with today... Look for this type of notice at BC Ferries' Tsawwassen Terminal, sometimes soon........

This here is the general thread for CP's BC Coast Service ships (photos & discussion).
- if you don't see a separate thread for your CP ship, then this here general CP thread is the place to post.
If you've got more than just a few items to post about that ship, then perhaps it would be better to start a thread for that separate CP ship, as long as it's not just a 1-off post.
----------------
On this topic, today we've created a new thread for CP's Princess Elaine, with EGFleet's photos as a start. - the goal isn't to have a separate thread for each CP ship. However the goal is to have separate threads for individual ships where we have lots of photos and discusion about.

I was just looking at this thread. Coming from a family that worked the coal mines of Nanaimo for years. What you ask does this have to do with the boats? The men in the mines could hear the screws of the ships passing over head. It got to the point they could tell the time by which ship was passing so as they didn't carry watches they knew when shift change was coming. I heard about this from my grandmother who lived in the Hub city for just short of a hundred years. I just thought I would pass this along.

:)in reply to eg fleet's tinted Princess Norah post card, not only did she briefly become the first Queen of the North, I have two prints of her with the blue funnel of the joint CN/CP service, as well as with the Northland livery. She had a very interesting last years of service! :)mrdot.
