It seems that the Inspiration will return earlier than expected, so far...

No service notice yet but the 7 and 9pm sailings on Route 2 with the Oak Bay are cancelled, due to a mechanical issue.
Since BC Ferries no longer has a mandate to serve the public, this means service is done on Route 2 for the day due to one vessel operation.
Edit: BCF has added a sailing with the Queen of Cowichan, so I remove 50% of my snideness.

Just fyi, I posted a bit of information on the Oak Bay. Coast guard were called out, hovercraft was en route just before 1900h, crankcase explosion was what they were told. No reported fire or injuries. Vessel "limping in to Horseshoe Bay" on one engine. That was all the callout info, none of it immediately confirmable.

Ok, BC Ferries has helpfully updated, they're now saying it was one engine that went out, three still working... just to be clear.

I am fairly certain the Oak Bay has two engines, not four.
Edit: just confirmed using the TSB Report, M05W0111, on the Oak Bay's striking of Sewells in HSB.

Sorry, working on some technical editing tonight and trying to field phone calls. I was basically retweeting BC Ferries ("No fire onboard, only smoke from #2 engine failure-still 3 engines operational!") to correct earlier into from coast guard, but that's not much of an excuse... Anyway, just thought you might be interested in the initial explosion info, I'll reinvoke the cone of silence now. Over and out. Profuse apologies.... Chris

I figured as much (minus the Tweet details); your information and reporting is very valuable and appreciated Not the first time BCF has released incorrect info like this, but what can you expect from the Thursday-night BCF Twitter contact - surely they have not been provided technical info.

So assuming the Oak Bay won't be fixed over night, what will they do with the available ships? The Oakey was due to go into refit next week anyway, so the Coquitlam could take over early. This would require the CR to go back to Dep Bay for route 30 and the SOBC to return to her #1 postion on Route 1 until the CI returns to Rt30 on or about Jan 20th... although this would leave route 1 with only odd-hour sailings this Fri and Sun.
I guess we'll find out in the morning.

From MarineTraffic's vessel track, Oak Bay dropped to 7kts just south of Queen Charlotte Channel at about 2:30UTC, made a hard turn south west of Whtyecliff Park and was adrift for around 10 minutes before resuming travel to HSB at 9-10kts by 2:45UTC. The Oak Bay is currently in HSB berth #2.

A crankcase explosion? This isn't a repair that can be done overnight. It will be interesting to see if there's a spare available at Deas which I'm kinda doubting. The Oak bay could be out for quite a while I'm thinking. Now the crunch is really on to fix those doors on the Inspiration

Shades of summer 2010 and the Surrey's engine replacement. Nanaimo on route #1 if anything else runs into a dock, explodes or catches fire?

Is the New West available or is she in re-fit?

To sum-up the vessel shuffle for Friday, because of the Oak Bay's crank-case incident:
After shuffling the vessel deck this morning, here's how things will settle down to for the day:
Route 2: - Cowichan and Coquitlam
Route 30: - Alberni and Renaissance
Route 1: - Celebration and SOBC
Some missed sailings during the morning shuffle, but settled down after that.

Is the New West available or is she in re-fit? According to SiiTech, her current location is Deas Dock. - I don't know how readily avaialble she would be. Unlikely to be available for today.

This is a test of the BCFS service notice publication system. If this had been a real service notice, your journey would have already been delayed.

So whaddy say Flugel? A nice picnic out there at Neck Point Park around 2 this afternoon? Wanna call Scott to join us? Bring the Hibachi and a bag of Kingsford charcoal so we can throw few burgers on... Even better that I have a head-cold today. Makes for a better experience in the outdoors. - Maybe I should go to Rathtrevor today, to suntan instead.?
