I guess you didn't get this email then?... I guess I didn't thoroughly look thru the list of servce notices I like how they mention a "lower vehicle carrying capacity"....I believe it is a difference of two cars. The key is overheight capacity. Big difference there.

The key is overheight capacity. Big difference there. Aside from overheight capacity, the Tenaka is exactly the same size as the Albion ferries, with a capacity of about 22 cars. The Kahloke carries 27 on average; that's a drop of about 20%. I've sent BC Ferries an email asking why they're putting Tenaka on the Hornby run when Tachek always used to be the winter boat. I'll let you know if I get a response.

I gather that we are having a wild & stormy morning around the Salish Sea today? BC Ferries current service notices show most of the fleet tied up firmly to their berths... www.bcferries.com/bcfservicenotices

BC Ferries has been seeing heavy traffic all day due to yesterday's cancellations. I am surprised they are not still tying up, as weather conditions are bad (but improving) in the Lower Mainland, notably South of the Fraser - wind, snow, etc.
Route 1 has been a gong show with a standard one sailing wait all day.

BC Ferries responded to my question as to why their website showed the Tenaka serving Hornby right up until June. They're saying now that Tenaka is just replacing the Kahloke while that vessel is filling in for the Quinitsa.
Hopefully their rep has her information right, and it's the website that is wrong.

Note: This Service Notice applies to the following route(s): - Vancouver (Tsawwassen) - Nanaimo (Duke Point)
Please be advised that a delay of approximately 30 minutes may occur on the 10:45 pm sailing from Departure Bay - Tsawwassen on Tuesday, April 10th.
After departing Departure Bay the Queen of Alberni will briefly stop at the Duke Point terminal to perform a dock fit before continuing on the journey to Tsawwassen. Could be a cool sailing to be on.

Does anyone know when "mid-April" means? I'm assuming that BC Ferries will give the public a more specific date to prevent any people parking in Departure Bay and ending up at Duke Point on their return the next day.

The Alberni has been removed from service for a few days like this each May for at least the last 3 years (maybe more but that's all I can definitely remember.) In past years, the service notice has stated that the maintenance period is to "prepare the Alberni for summer service". Does anyone know if some specific work is done, or is it just a general "tune up" so things run smoothly over the busy summer months?

Usually when the ships are prepped for summer, they're cleaned from top to bottom. This means every chair is washed, all of the carpets are cleaned, and the floors are waxed. Yes, a huge 3rd party cleaning crew (like Molly Maid) are brought on to do the work. This is similar to when a ship is coming out of refit. Normally in most cases this is done during the overnight layover. I guess on Route 30, there isn't enough layover time to do so unless they planned it for a weekend. But there could be other mechanical reasons why they'd like the extra down time to complete the scheduled work. Plus it's another reason for the New West to get out and stretch her legs so to speak.

Also, there's no service notice about this...
But the Overhead Walkway at Berth 1 Swartz Bay is out of service until May 23rd. So the Spirits are using Berth 2 in meantime, and I'd assume the Renaissance has been tieing up in Berth 3.

The New West's afternoon sailings have also been cancelled. That is now all three of its scheduled round trips today. To compensate partially for this the C-Ren will do one late extra round trip leaving SWB at 8:00 PM. The BCFS current conditions page shows things to be pretty messed up on route 1. I would assume that the SoVI has its ramps in use (though I am not sure if they are still usable, as is the case with the SoBC).

I felt the impact of this today, on my route-1 ferry riding. Busier sailings on the remaining 3 ships. And the Q of New Westminster was busy doing circles off Tsawwassen from 1:30 to 3:30 pm today. Fun to watch her go round & round and round...

So the Spirits are using Berth 2 in meantime, and I'd assume the Renaissance has been tieing up in Berth 3. I was on the SOVI inbound to Swartz today, and we approached via the usual Spook Outbound route, in order to set us up for the stern-berthing into berth-2.

Darn it, I was on the SOVI's 9:00am sailing this morning, and I didn't go down to the main car deck to see if they were in use. However, we didn't leave any later than usual (or not a whole lot later) so that would indicate that they likely weren't used. .....I'm so ashamed, haha ;D
