A few more views of Rhododendron, at Fanny Bay BC, at dusk on March 12, 2013. And this concludes my first ever views of the good ship Rhododendron. Thanks, Mike, and also to Scott, for tracking Rhododendron and getting some great photos of the old gal in her new home. I do miss seeing Rhody going back and forth between Point Defiance and Vashon. That was a view I never got tired of. I also enjoyed the times I got to ride on that little ferry. She was unique.

To get a more clean and in-one-post of the Rhody's journey up to Fanny Bay, I have done this big summary of what John, Paul and I posted on the move. Thanks to everyone that followed the move! I would also like to thank Paul, Scott and Mike (FH) that did an awesome teamwork for photos! After posting this I will delete all of my posts regarding the subject. I will let the others determine if they also want to delete posts which have all of their content here.

This has got to be probably the most informative news article regarding the future of the Rhododendron, however it's a few days old now. Still valid though, and it should hopefully put all of the negative speculation to rest. This is actually one of the most positive futures of an ex Ferry in our region. Queen of the Islands being another one of them, although she has had bit of a bumpy post career. www.kitsapsun.com/news/2013/mar/08/scallop-farmer-thrilled-to-integrate-former-into/#axzz2NZKSft7r

Barring a continuing career as a functioning ferry, that's just about as good a fate as a retired vessel can have- a useful retirement with responsible owners who seem to respect her. And, unlike so many other purchasers, this company is actually viable.

WSF has done some housekeeping on its site. Firstly, the day after the RHODY's departure, she was deleted from the fleet list. www.wsdot.wa.gov/ferries/vesselwatch/Vessels.aspxNext up was the Vessel Maintenance Slate. Version 184, dated March 6, 2013, was the last to include the RHODODENDRON. Version 185, dated March 20, 2013, deletes her. Best wishes to her new owners.

My, the RHODODENDRON is dwarfed and closely guarded by those beautiful mountains of Vancouver Island! The mountains she came closest to here when in service were Turtleback and Constitution on Orcas Island when she served the San Juan Islands in 1984 just after getting her bows modified. The Cascades and Olympics were at a fair to good distance away from her other routes here on the Sound. Looking forward in seeing pictures of her with those mountains having a healthy snow pack in the forthcoming winter, after we enjoy some summertime in between. One thing to say, I think the riders aboard the QUINITSA would be drooling over the RHODY's covered car deck on clammy days and wished their ferry would have the same.

You can't actually see the Rhododendron very well from the Quinitsa... as well, the vast majority of vehicle riders don't get out of their cars on the ten minute crossing. Last time I went over, I stopped at the Fanny Bay dock closest to the old ferry, and there were tons of people taking photos- of the elephant seals on a float, with no one paying much attention if any to the Rhododendron.

The goings-on at either end of the Rhododendron. It struck me that for all the time since her last revenue run, her paint looks better than most in service BC Ferries.

A scallops story that might have some impact on the Rhododendron (because it is concerning the Rhody's owner): From Parksville Qualicum Beach News, HERE

A scallops story that might have some impact on the Rhododendron (because it is concerning the Rhody's owner): From Parksville Qualicum Beach News, HEREAs a renowned and celebrated producer of Scallops this is very unfortunate. Anything can happen when you are in agriculture, horticultural, and in this case seaculture. I hope they can find a solution soon. Worst case is they will have to get new leases and move to another unaffected area.

Does anyone know where the Rhododendron's engines are or how they were disposed?

Does anyone know where the Rhododendron's engines are or how they were disposed? Given the very brief time between the vessel's departure from Eagle Harbor and her entry into service as a... whatever it's called that she is doing, plus the fact that the caps are on the exhaust pipes in the pictures, I'd be very surprised if they weren't still on board and being used.

I spent about an hour at Fanny Bay today, observing the scallop farming work around Rhododendron. She's definitely being well used as a floating work area. A nice covered platform where the scallops and equipment can be brought in from the ocean (by those little boats) and sorted on the covered deck, sheltered from the weather. While I was at the Fanny Bay gov't float, a small boat brought a couple boxes of scallops from Rhody to the jetty, and loaded onto a delivery truck right on the float. I shot stills and video. Here are the stills: Taken from a bit north of the gov't float: The scene from the float, with the Rhody fan club Boat returning from the float, after dropping off product to the delivery truck: A close up of her houseworks.
