A bit of an illusion of a photo, of Rhododendron. Trying to make her appear as a derelict building. - seen from onboard Quinitsa

Here's my video of Rhody at Fanny Bay.
This October 15, 2014 video shows her at work, as a floating work platform, with plenty of comings/goings by smaller boats who are dropping items off and picking items up.
She doesn't move around to different locations; she stays at this spot.

Nice video and pictures Mr. Horn. The Rhoddy looks like she could take on a load of vehicles and do a run. Looking good!

I can't tell from the engines, but the "No. [obscured] End" on the bulkhead in the background makes for a decent pedigree.

Unfortunate but not unexpected, given the fortunes of her owners in the scallop industry. She's a big piece of property to maintain. From a shore view, at least, they've kept her looking pretty spiffy.
Wonder whatever happened to their previous purchase, the AMH's Chilkat...

It was a nice try for her new owners. Hopefully, she will find another good home. I'm still in shock that she went up there under her own power without a single life saving item on board, except maybe some flotation vests. Whomever allowed this was endangering her move crew and the assigned Canadian pilots. Hopefully, if she sails again for another site under her own power, she'll be equipped with something to save her crew if need be. The RHODODENDRON in happier days on one of her many trips to Columbia Beach from Mukilteo. Despite the noisy generator in the engine room, she was a rather quiet ferry from the outside with the gentle sound of "putt-putt-putt" from her funnel exhausting the combusted fuel from the Fairbanks machinery. I remember the sound very well. I wished I had a recording device to capture and share the sounds she made before she was altered in 1991. One thing I can share is that the tone of her generator, when heard on the car deck, sounded the same as her whistles. These sounds, except for the whistles, were not the same after 1991.

Check mv487 on the same site. Looks like the Klatawa or Kulleet is too.

The Chilkat is still tied up at Lovric's Marina in Anacortes, but she's had her house severely reduced. She's open-decked now, but still has her bow ramp.

Low quality pic of the Rhododendron at Fanny Bay. Taken Aug 15, 2015. I had not intended to be in Fanny Bay. I was blown there by a strong southeaster that sprang up on the afternoon of Aug 14. I departed French Creek the morning of the 14th in my 6 meter sailboat headed for Deep Bay, at the south end of Baynes Sound. I entered the sound after experiencing 25-30kt winds and 3 meter+ waves near Chrome Island. The wind funneling up the sound made it impossible for me to make it upwind into Deep Bay so I carried on up the sound and was able to land at Fanny Bay, where I tied up for the night. The wave heights in the southern portion of the sound were in excess of 1 m but seemed to become significantly smaller near Ships Point. I headed for Deep Bay after it calmed down the following morning and snapped a pic of the Rhody as I passed by.

That's a fairly hefty asking price isn't it? $ 700,000 USD at today's rate of 1.318020 = $ 922,614.00 At that price I doubt BCF would even be interested. However, BCF may have some interest on one of those smaller ferries on Harlow's 'car lot'.

Showing us that she's still there, as a working scallop-farm barn: - December 28, 2015 The Rhody gets lots of views from people who stop to see the sea-lions. I'm sure that not too many of those people know her history. DSC08881 by Mike Bonkowski, on Flickr DSC08721 by Mike Bonkowski, on Flickr

Hey does anyone know when the Rhody is being sold off? I plan to do a trip up to Fanny Bay sometime in May or June. That is impossible to know. It all depends on if and when a buyer is found. However, closer to your trip, we can give you useful advice to tell you if she's still there.

It's my favorite.

Does anyone have a link to information about the Rhodendrum being up for sale? If it is for sale, I wonder if it is due to Island Scallops having a large portion of their crop wiped out last year? -------- ----------------- I was worried about the impact of the pandemic on the Island Scallops business. I haven't heard anything though, ever since the first story 2 years ago. (posted earlier in this thread, in Feb.2014)

Riding along Vancouver Island on 19a south towards Sideny for a return to the U.S. after 4 days of motorcycle riding and this shape and color just barely catches my eye. It's not enough for me to stop, but thing, "What was that boat? Why does it seem familiar?" As I still had hours to kill before my departure to Friday Harbor I turned around and as I saw the shape and colors again--I remember this particular forum thread and smiled that I'd just spotted the Rhodedendron. She's still in Fanny Bay and made me smile.... Attachments:

She's been there a long time, and often photographed... were we expecting a move? Can't remember if I read of her being up for sale.
