What is going to be the 5/6th Olympic Class Vessle name? Cowlitz and Klahanie. I don’t actually know. Those are just two names I’d like to see. Nobody knows. The contracts haven’t been awarded. They won’t likely be named until the vessels are formally announced and construction begins.

FYI - if anyone is interested in how Washington State Ferries get named, and what the process is, this link may answer some of your questions. In short, the Washington State Transportation Commission names the ferries, and they typically issue a public request for naming proposals a few months in advance of naming a new vessel. Individuals cannot propose a new name, but a "sponsoring entity" with support from local, regional, and/or state officials can propose a new name. wstc.wa.gov/Naming/FerryRoadBridge/FAQ.pdf

The former Wooden Electrics CHETZEMOKA and KLAHANIE were sisters. I wished the three KDT ferries would have honored the W-E class (after naming the first one the CHETZEMOKA) and had the others named KLAHANIE and KEHLOKEN.

But only marginally useful when a boat is somewhere that it is seldom more than 20 minutes from a dock. To say nothing of the difficulties of clearing the space of passengers wanting to take video of the event and post it on Facebook... True but I think they would could closed the out decks when they call the Helicopter to get ready for the arrival of it. I think a boat would be be able to get into dock before helicopter arrives on a 20 minutues. Might be of good use if one or more of these are placed on the Edmonds - Port Townsend run whenever the Hood Canal Bridge has a major shutdown. It's a 90-minute run. If you're off Double Bluff or Mutiny Bay, you're about 30 or 45 minutes away from a dock. Nice trip. I took a few rides back in 1979-1980.

I don't think the name KEHLOKEN should be reused without the blessing of the Japanese-American community.

Or, transfer KENNEWICK's nameboards to a new bigger ferry and let the KDT class be the CHETZEMOKA, SALISH, and KLAHANIE. Both the old CHETZEMOKA and KLAHANIE did have some outdoor space for passengers, the KEHLOKEN none. The KDT's have ample outdoor space.

You know thinking about it given the way WSF has done the interior of the boats lately with numerous historical pictures and exhibits if you turned it up a notch or two I think you could essentially make the boat a mobile museum to educate and tell the story. The name of the boat could be part of the story... Besides the local community Japanese American orgs you could get broader organizations such as the Wing Luke and Asian Art Museum on board also.

That would be an excellent approach.

BY SUMMER 2028By this time, the Coupville ferry terminal should be moved out of the harbor, and much larger vessels assigned to the route. In addition, the Triangle should be broken up into the following routes: Southworth-Vashon, Fauntleroy-Vashon, and Southworth-Seattle. Also, a massive class of new ferries should be built to replace the Supers. These ferries should be based on the design of the Olympics, lengthened by 40 feet, for a vehicle capacity of 162. (I subtracted one car from 4 lanes to allow more gently-sloped gallery deck ramps.), as well as an upper passenger cabin level to accommodate more passengers for busy routes such as Bremerton. did you just predict the lengthened Olympic design 10 years before it happened!? I mean geez man you were only short by 7 feet!
