Ever since being established Victoria has had such a history for shipping. Specially connecting to New Westminster and then continueing on up the fraser river till Port Douglas. Then moving on to Yale for gold.
Then after, CP and other coastal ships got on the scene connecting Victoria to Vancouver. Till their demise and the Government formed BC Ferries. By then Swartz Bay ferry terminal and Tsawwassen terminal took all the traffic.
Victoria has seen alot.

This will be my first to start this thread posting, but does anyone know when the Causeway in the inner harbour was built? And when Black ball moved from where ship point is now to where its current place. When was the original Black ball terminal built? Whats the time line for the company?
And finally when was the CP terminal dock dismantled and modified to todays?
These two terminals sure had a big part in Victoria growth.

The causeway was built in the first decade of the 20th century. It was needed to allow construction of the Empress Hotel on tidal mud flats at the head of James Bay. Before the causeway there was a trestle bridge linking Government Street's south & north sections.
The causeway had to have been completed prior to the construction of the Empress, the original wing of which was built between 1904 & 1908.

That I knew, what I mean is the lower section where people sell (Eg. Art at small stations) and some buskers do their talent.

Confirmed, I dug (even deeper) down into the BC archives and found that it was the 70's that the harbour area changed dirmatically.
Anyway this thread will be on the harbour so enjoy.

I seem to remember the CP dock being "shortened" in I think the late '60's. As to Blackball moving across the harbour I would think about '73 or '74. My sister was in Customs and had to walk around to clear the boat when she came in. At the folks somewhere there is a picture from about then just behind the dock. I stand ready to be corrected time wise but that is my best guess.
