On Wednesday, I'm embarking on a solo overnight cycling trip to Lasqueti Island. I'll be bringing along a tent. Most places I look on the web say there aren't any public tenting spots on the island, so I guess I'll just find myself a little hidey hole in or near Squitty Bay Provincial Park.
Does anybody have any information with regards to how Lasqueti is for cycling? I know I'll have to watch out for the islands thousand or so feral sheep, and I gotta make sure I don't get trampled by one of Tikki's 50 or so St. Bernard dogs that she breeds and herds around the island, but what about hills? Is Lasqueti hilly? How are the road surfaces? Is there room for one of the few cars on the island to be able to pass me on my bike?
Are the locals friendly, for the most part? Is there any good swimming in Squitty Bay, where I'll be spending the night?
Are the roads easy to follow? Is there good signage on where to go? Maps for the island are few and far between, MEC had none, and Google's sucks...
And I guess the method of boarding the ferry and paying for passage is similar to the Gambier/Keats ferry?
Enough questions, on with the answers!

Never been to Lasqueti, but I'm pretty sure it's covered in the Vancouver Island edition of the "Backroads Mapbooks" series. www.backroadmapbooks.com/shop/

Canadian Viking, if it would be of use to you I could send you a .jpg of the topo map for Lasqueti Island. Maybe there is one online, but I didn’t find any on a quick search. However the TopoFusion program that I use for hiking and backcountry skiing around here will import all the Canadian topos, including the 20 meter contour interval ones. (I just checked!) So it would be easy to do a screen capture. (I hope I’m not stepping on toes with respect to potential legal issues concerning the Canadian government!) In addition, if I draw a route in TF, it will calculate everything a bike enthusiast would want to know; an elevation profile for the route, ascending elevation, descending elevation… on and on. :-) And waypoints too for your gps. :-)

I can draw out my route, I know where I'm going I want to conserve my phone battery, so I'll probably just make out a few printouts of the map on separate sheets of paper and refer to them. I like paper better anyway. And Paul, thanks muchly, but those links go to scary looking pages which I don't know how to use... so much for teenagers being the masters of the web!

One nice thing about TopoFusion is that you can export a map area of your choosing at the highest resolution and at any size your video card can handle. In addition it will display a 3D view where the map of your choice is draped over a 3D surface generated from DEM data that is automatically downloaded. You can turn and twist the 3D image so you can look at it from any direction you want. It's often been useful for planning. P_K, do any of the links you mentioned lead to Canadian marine charts? Free ones that is! :-) Do you know of a seamless viewer for Canadian marine charts? I've played some with Caris Easy View, but I've not tried it with Canadian charts. Larry

Hi everyone, I stumbled onto this forum whist searching for some mountain bike trails on Lasqueti Is. I'm planning a kayak/bike trip in a month, and really want to find a less trafficked island that I can camp on and explore trails on. I haven't been able to find anything on Lasqueti yet, but it sounds like there's a topo out there somewhere? At this point in the planning stage I'm trying to narrow down a few options for islands to visit, so I'm open to suggestions for other places as well! Thanks...I'm hoping this thread is still active three years later

The passenger ferry can only take kayaks if space permits.

The ferry, the Centurion VII, leaves French Creek on Vancouver Island. It will dump you at False Bay and from there you're on your own. It is a very odd island, but I would reccomend checking out MaryJane's Kitchen which is just a short walk from the dock.

I am looking for a way to transport 4-6 people and kayaks (some kayaks up to 17 feet long) to Lasqueti Island or Jedediah Island in early August from Vancouver Island. We would need to return in 4-5 days. The ferry to Lasqueti seems to transport kayaks but only if less than 14 feet?

I would call these operators for pricing. (would also tell them to book other cargo to off set costs) Pulled from the Lasqueti website. www.lasqueti.ca/services/freight-barges"Bulk or heavy cargo, not permitted on the ferry, must be barged onto Lasqueti. KGL freight services Scheduled freight runs every Friday, (weather permitting) year round from French creek. Other deliveries booked as required. Phone or text Keith at 250-951-9291 (cell) or 250-333-8509 (home) for more information or to book Palaquin Adventures D'Arcy Henry's barge is 52ft long, with 29ft of deck space and an 8-ton weight capacity. She is available for hire for adventures in the Salish Sea Call or text: 250-954-5809 for more info"
