In honour of Black Friday, Cyber Monday, etc. I've got a 2 for 1 deal for everyone: Two whistles for the click of one video.

This Week's Walkthrough: The Coastal Renaissance. I feel this video would have been a little smoother going through her passenger lounge had it not been a full sailing that day.
Next Week: I upload the first of many Walkthrough Retakes. Starting with the MV Quinitsa.

Coastal Renaissance is working Route-2 today. - here's my view of her, across Pipers Lagoon in Nanaimo. The arrival of Raisin Sauce means that spring is at hand in Nanaimo. DSC00407 by Mike Bonkowski, on Flickr

Oh my, that is an impressive reach by you and your camera. Wow, especially the clarity of the Olympic Highway rock-cut behind the ship. I'm assuming you were at Orlebar Point, which is the nice view beside the Entrance Island lighthouse.

Hello forum,
I was wondering if anyone knew what the CR departure times were from Horseshoe bay on a weekday? I'm going to be in BC for the first time since the super Cs arrived and I want to catch a ride on one. Thanks for the info, Sorry if this is under the wrong subject, JWJ

Thanks for the info, Sorry if this is under the wrong subject, JWJ One way to find out is to go to the BC Ferries site, the Reserve and Plan Tab, and click on Reserve Now and go through the process of making a vehicle reservation on the route you are interested in. You don't have to complete your reservation to find out which vessel is operating on the route and sailing you wish to take. As long as you're not projecting too far out, it's pretty accurate. This week, Queens of Oak Bay and Cowichan are operating between Horseshoe Bay and Nanaimo (Route 2).

In the summer schedule it's the sailing times that roughly correspond to that (but I don't have the summer schedule memorized). The CR also makes regular guest appearances between Tsawwassen - Swartz Bay, and sits out of service at particular low traffic times.

I believe she is currently covering for the Coastal Celebration on Route 1, so the Celebration can get some TLC before the summer.

Makes sense. I'm on the SOBC right now approaching Swartz Bay and both the CR and CC are in berth. I was confused when I saw there was an extra sailing on route 1 Tuesday of this week that was the CR.

Coastal Renaissance arriving at Horseshoe Bay with the 10:40 AM sailing from Nanaimo - 19 June 2016. She was lining up to use berth 1 @ HSB. Is that normal? I was under the impression that route 2 vessels normally used berth 2? © WCK-JST by Jim Thorne, on Flickr

Berth 1 is the main Coastal berth. Very rarely does the CR use berth 2.

Berth 1 is the main Coastal berth. Very rarely does the CR use berth 2. Is the reason for this the same as why the Coastal class boats use only berth 2 at Swartz Bay?

Here's a video compilation I made a couple weeks ago of the various sounds one may hear aboard the Renaissance and her sister ships. This thread has tons of eye-candy, but not much ear-candy. This should be sufficient for now...

I've been meaning to post this completely subjective observation for a while. When new transportation "things" arrive, be it ferries, buses, trains I am curious to see when they stop being "new" and just another regular thing.
The Coastal Renaissance gave me the settled-in-BC Ferry experience a few times this summer. The stair wells from the car deck to the passenger lounges are starting to smell like diesel with a touch of grease. Brilliant. The decks are getting potholed and there's some pesky rust spots that seem to have averted attention. The carpet is visibly worn in places, and the ship itself is starting to show tangible differences from the two sisters.
When I was thinking about this all, it also sunk into me that the CR is quickly approaching a decade in the water. Crazy how time flies by, seems like last month I took the Coastal Renaissance to Departure Bay on my first revenue sailing, and hopped on the Queen of Esquimalt back to Horseshoe Bay.

I'm never going to have any particular affection for the 'Renaissance or her sisters. They're just too big and blocky and... I don't know. Just no personality, in a 'ship' sense.
I noticed the exterior deck coatings wearing about a month after they were in service. Don't know if BC Ferries specified the coatings, or if Flensburger went cheap.
In a more positive vein... these are comfortable, efficient vessels. Basic creature comforts are quite good, and they look fine inside- not fancy, but decently appointed. I wish my usual schedule put me on the 'Inspiration rather than the 'Alberni all the time.
I suspect that the travelling public have very few complaints with the 'Renaissance and her sisters. Maybe one reason why it's so hard to develop an attachment is the ridiculous names that have no connection to anything to do with our coast, despite the 'coastal'.
