The power of telephoto ... BC Ferries' Coastal Renaissance is in Georgia Strait heading to Duke Point from Tsawwassen, with Howe Sound mountains for a backdrop - 22 May 2019. If future vessels on route 2 have buffets, would BC Ferries change Sitka Coffee Place to buffet on the Coastal Renaissance?

Coastal Renaissance has returned to service today. This time she is replacing the Coastal Inspiration out of Duke Point. Coastal Inspiration is in Departure Bay.

The Coastal Renaissance has started her engines and has been untied from the maintenance berth at Departure Bay. Her lights are on and there are quite a few crew members on board. I assume she's going out for a run. Wondered if she would be replacing the Spirit of VI but that does not seem to be the case as the VI is still showing on the schedule for today. (Edit: today's schedule has now changed, CR is doing the Swartz Bay run replacing the SOVI.)
The sound of the CR's engine woke me up just after 6 am and when I saw what was going on, I decided I'd rather watch her go out than sleep. I miss the ferries coming and going in Departure Bay tremendously.

The Coastal Renaissance rumbled back into Departure Bay at 11 last night. She's now tied up at the maintenance pier again.

A crane barge came in to Departure Bay this afternoon and is parked next to the Coastal Renaissance. I surmise that heavier work on the CR is likely starting soon. There seems to have been a bit of light work with a few people seen on the ferry but nothing big that I have seen.
Edit: the crane barge is actually for the Coastal Inspiration. The Renaissance and Inspiration switched places very early this morning.

This mechanical failure appears to be something that hasn't happened since the vessel went into service so no doubt the engineering folks at BCFS will be taking a long look at what caused this failure to occur. The troubling part of this story is the length of time it took to get tugs to come to the assistance of the 'Renny'. As someone pointed out, the vessel could have drifted into very deep water where her anchors, if deployed would have never reached the sea floor. On the customer relations side of the incident, it does appear that passengers were not well served upon getting ashore but the slow response by tugs was basically the culprit causing such a delay. I'm not sure how BCFS will sort this all out with disgruntled passengers in the long run, but suffice to say that everyone should keep in mind that at the end of the day, there were no injuries, all passengers were never put in any real danger and folks must remember that whenever one travels by any mode of transport, things can go wrong on a scale of 1 -100 and hopefully the outcomes of every incident is minimal. And, no folks there isn't customer relations guidelines that apply to BCFS operations as there is when one looks at what airlines must do when passengers are inconvenienced. The loss of engine power on BCFS's Lower Mainland routes is a better bet than falling 30 thousand feet out of the sky eh?

I see Renaissance is laid up this summer, what a bummer. Yes, she hasn't moved for a while. From what I can hear and see, her engine is started up from time to time, but the propellers haven't been run since she came back from replacing the Coastal Inspiration. I see she's not on the schedule for the rest of the summer which is really sad. I guess she'll just sit here until she needs to go cover for another ferry. It's nice to be able to look at her but I'd rather see her coming and going.

I see Coastal Renaissance is on the Reservation page as the main ship out of Departure Bay on Sept 11. I know don't get my hopes up.

Cool! Looks like she'll run for a couple of weeks - up to September 27. The Queen of Coquitlam doesn't seem to be running Sept 11 - 27.

Sounds and looks like BC Ferries has been testing some emergency response systems / procedures on the Coastal Renaissance today. A piercing tone has sounded from the CR several times, and the orange rescue boat has been out speeding around Departure Bay with a little chase boat following behind.

It is still on RBI to return to service on Sept 11 as the #1 ship Departure Bay to HB Run. Cowichan to be #2 . I would assume crew training is happening on the Renaissance then.

Only Friday through Sunday the Coastal Renaissance will be main vessel out of Departure Bay, and she will not sail Monday through Thursday. Queen of Cowichan will be second vessel out of Departure Bay, also doing a round trip on Langdale route on Fridays and Sundays and she will be the main vessel out of Departure Bay Monday through Thursday. This seems like the way Departure Bay vessels are being assignment until Thanksgiving weekend.

If you are of A Certain Age, you may find this funny. The guys toodling around yesterday on the Coastal Renaissance's rescue boat and the chase boat wore red helmets. From a distance, it looked like the members of Devo were having a grand old evening boating around Departure Bay.

Looks like the Coastal Renaissance is getting ready to go out. Her engines are on (but not her propellers yet) and her lines have been untied. She's not on the schedule today so I assume she's going out for sea trials after being tied up for so long.
Edit: interestingly, she just went out into the bay, turned around, and went into one of the normal berths. The Queen of Coquitlam looks like she's getting ready to head out, but she's not on the schedule today, so I assume she's heading wherever she's going for maintenance, and the CR will take over for her this weekend.
