Coastal Inspiration arrives back at 'home base', Duke Point Terminal, just in time for the afternoon crew change. Actually, it was running about 20 minutes late.

I think the Inspiration is acting like a single ended vessel today, she switched ends in Swartz Bay before docking… why?

Reducing License mean: This will bring our allowable capacity from 1539 passengers to 750 passengers, which may impact some customers looking to travel on a particular sailing.
Customers may notice vehicle deck space onboard that is not being utilized. Please keep in mind that this is due to a passenger count limit, and our crew is focussed on loading as many customers onboard as the license will allow.
That mean all of deck 5 will be closed for rest of the sailing.

Definitely going to be some interesting things happening out there today.

They Should change closed sign on deck 5 that say "This section is closed due to insufficient Transport Canada License"
But it's say on the blue signs "This section is currently closed. Please proceed up to Deck 6, Thank you.
CI Have a C License in 2008 and they should have License change to A

I’m on Mayne at the moment and I found it funny that the Inspiration wasn’t going through Active Pass… she’s going all the way around Saturna (she’s been a single ender this entire weekend and they finally fixed her rudder)! Has a Route One vessel ever taken that detour?

Has a Route One vessel ever taken that detour? Yes, it has... can't tell you which vessel(s) but I think the issue was the same- navigation challenges.

Has a Route One vessel ever taken that detour? That detour has happened a few times in the past. I remember just a few years ago one of the Spirits ( SoBC, IIRC) was doing that route due to an engine/navigational issue. The Queen of Alberni when it was relatively new and on Route 1 did it a few times. I am sure that there has been others. Way back in the (civilized) day (night, actually) the CPR's 'night boats' Princess Joan & Princess Elizabeth used that route routinely so as to avoid tight navigational manoeuvres that might wake sleeping passengers.

One of the safety limitations for the Coastal Class is to have 4 prime mover engines/generators available for transiting Active Pass.
The Coastal Class have one electric drive motor at each end, that turns their respective propeller. Mode 1 (one propeller turning) can be achieved with any two primer mover/generators running. However, in order to run Mode 2 (two propellers turning), there has to be a minimum of 3 prime mover/generators running. Typically they will sail all day long with 3 prime movers running. The fourth prime mover/generator is typically left turned off or in standby mode to quickly flash up and connect to the switchboard on short notice if one of the other prime movers has an issue. The fourth prime mover is also used to gain a bit more speed and to have full power availability during maneuvers in strong winds.
As for Active Pass, it's a matter of available redundancy if something were to happen to the generators at the same time as requiring mode 2 in Active Pass. As we all know, there's far less room for error while navigating Active Pass compared to navigating Boundary Pass. When you're running a diesel electric ship, you're always taking the power consumption and power availability into consideration. Otherwise if you don't, "poof!"...the ship may black out as a worst case scenario. Then it takes time to reset a number of breakers. Similar to blowing a circuit breaker at your house, except in this case you can lose propulsion. Therefore, if only 3 prime movers are available, then the decision is made to avoid Active Pass until the fourth prime mover is available again.
The Spirits also have a similar limitation, however I'm not totally familiar with their propulsion system.

I Got message from BC Ferries they said:
The licensing for the particular ship is determined by a number of available crew members who are certified by Transport Canada. Due to crewing availability some sailings may receive lower passenger capacity license, but still being able to sail as scheduled.
CI Will have to stay in C License

Why Coastal Inspiration don't do Coast Cafe Express on Deck 5? You are aware that deck five is never open on route 30?

Deck 5 remains closed due to a combination of factors. Not only do the Coastals typically run with a lower crew count on Route 30, but there simply isn't the ridership demand for it to even be deck 5 to even be necessary. In the heat of Summer on an A license, route 30 would only average around 800 passengers during the peak times of the day. The Coastals can carry 1600 passengers with 34 crew on an A license and about 860 with 23 crew on a C license. Pre-covid, the Coastals would have over 40 crew to open up all lounges and amenities on Routes 1 and 2.

They Never Announce "Attention on the outer deck. Ship will whistle and is very loud, cover your ears" and they always forgot to announce about deck 5 is closed for the sailing.
