Well I would think BC Ferries would modify that part of the ship and put in better viewing windows for the passengers as she will be sailing through some of the nicest scenery in BC. You think they would do that.

I may be missing something, but Sonia doesn’t appear to have a bow door or visor.. Is BC going to install one or is she going to be a stern load/unload only?

It's probably going to stay the way it is but BCFS could easily install one.

They would probobly just wait and then install it then. It is going to be put up north to let the Queen of Prince Rupert have this years refit and finish last years and then it will be summer so they might install one next winter

I briefly discussed this with Graham on Friday, but my feeling (keeping in mind my feeling was that the "Kuper" wouldn't have RADs) is that the Sonia will have few major modifications at first, as they'll want her in service ASAP. Much like the Queen of Surrey. That said, BCFS, rather than BCFC, is more concerned with the "experience" than ever.

You think they would do that. I think they're thinking of the long term, as in that the Sonia will be on the Hecate Strait route to Haida Gwaii where looking out the windows isn't as high of a priority to the passengers.

Good morning from Greece. Sonia is now berthed on a repair-dock in Piraeus with new BC livery. At morning time i overtook her during morning trials and has a speed of 14 to 17 knots. For pictures check in my site apostolossphotos.fotopic.net/Thanks a lot

Still has her name But now into the club of the ferries. Currently I think she sort of looks better in the Wave livery then the Queen of the North was. The Queen of the North was better in Expo Colours.

It strikes me that say 25 years from now, someone will circulate one of those photos, with a "Can you identify the location?" caption......similar to what we do today on this forum (ie. the pic of the Kelsey Bay terminal, etc etc).
With Apostolos's permission, those pics would be great to save in our own private collections.

This weekend BCFS has dispatched a crew to Greece to pick up the Sonia for its trans Atlantic - Panama Canal - Pacific Coast journey to its new home. Many northern service crew are involved in this assignment. Sorry, they are not taking passengers on this 'repositioning cruise'.
This journey may provide some experience for the trans Atlantic delivery of the Super C's. Open ocean transits of ships designed for protected Georgia St. operations will present something of a challenge and risk, I would think.
BTW, the new paint does improve the Sonia's appearance. But more than new paint will be required to make it half ways attractive, especially when viewed from the front.

She definitely looks classier in the BC Ferries scheme than with the blue rear end of Balearia. I think I could get to like her.

I think she looks outstanding, and to be honest, I like the name. No point getting attached to it, but I still like "Sonia".
I wonder how a person could find out exactly what day she will be transiting the Canal?
Would love to watch it live on the canal web cams.
And a huge thanks you to Apostolos!
What would we have done without your pics!
It would have been a shame to have to fly all the way to Greece to keep an eye on her…lol

When are we going to get it? The "Coastal" naming was for the Super C Class. If they pick coastal for her name, I'll eat the closest thing to a sunshine breakfast.

I think she looks great. She looks better in BC Ferries colours than she did with her old company. She now looks like one of our lovely White and Blue BC Ferries! She should be leaving pretty soon for her big trip up here. I am looking forward to seeing her in Victoria next month!

Her Departure Date is tomorrow. With putting the timezones into consideration, she'll probably leave Greece, while we're all sleeping tonight.

I loved the trip up the inside passage and did roundtrips a number of times. I spent hours outside. The sightlines on the Sonia sure don't look like they will be as good as on the QOTN. I guess we will see. Look forward to seeing what the shipyard will do for the replacement ships for northern routes.

Greetings from Seattle! If all is going well, the MV SONIA should be leaving her wake behind soon on the Mediterranean Sea and heading out onto the open ocean of Atlantic. Hopefully, we'll see her through the Panama Canal in one form of photo sources or another. It would be very interesting if the Victoria yard could release a PDF copy of the work orders for this ship. Someone up there should sweet talk them into giving us one to review. I have done a touch up on one of the photos on this page. This is MY design for new windows for the enhancement of public viewing of the magnificent Inside Passage. The port holes remain on the Stateroom Deck to maintain consistency on that deck. Large windows are already in the current design on the Boat Deck below the stack. Many thanks to the photographer for providing a straight and level pic to work from. I think the most likely name given to this ship would be MV HARTLEY BAY (named for the wonderful community of people who pulled out all the stops in providing care for the folks who abandoned the MV QUEEN OF THE NORTH on her sinking there). For this, I place the name on the new ship. Let us all wish the crew of the MV SONIA a safe voyage from Greece to British Columbia! GO LIONS (AND SEAHAWKS) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Our friend in Greece says she's still tied up in Piraeus as of today. Greetings, "Great Big Nimpkish"! Many thanks for the message of update. The crew must be finalising the trip plans, meals, fuel stops, shipboard drills, and ensuring that the machinery is ready. Keep us posted. We'll see this ship here eventually. -ferrynutseattle

For anyone who is interested... with the kind co-operation of our friend Apostolos in Greece in providing a couple photos, I have compiled as much information I can find about the Sonia into a webpage. Be my guest and be my proof-readers:) It's at: www.westcoastferries.ca/sonia.html
