The report in the Fiji Sun describing the impending arrival of the 'L.P.3', clears up a few questions as to Fiji registering of older vessels, the timeline in getting the Fijian counterparts of our M.O.T. over here to inspect the ship etc. So, no more vessels older than 20 years, after the exemption that was made for the 'LP3'? I suppose that means neither the 'Nanny' or the 'Burnaby' will be heading off into the land of sun, surf and palm trees. Mr. Goundar acknowledges that the relocation of the 'L.P.3' is 2 months behind time but is no doubt satisfied that purchase et al has now been finalized and he can get on with getting her into service a.s.a.p., no doubt the extra tariff income would be welcomed to off set the 78 day hotel bill rung up by his crew waiting to get the voyage to Fiji underway. Very glad to hear that the crew and vessel were able to weather that nasty storm and as there will undoubtedly be more wintery conditions encountered before reaching Fiji, let's hope they're able to safely complete this trans-Pacific crossing. We wish them Godspeed!

Having experienced two typhoons in the Indian Ocean while serving aboard a Norwegian freighter 4 times the size of the 'Wack', let me assure everyone that a 'roller coaster on the sea' is not anyone's idea of fun. When, under orders from the Master, crew are forbidden to open exterior doors, the ship heaving and pitching which necessitates reeling down companionways with one foot on the deck and the other on a bulkhead, or both at once on either, the atmosphere onboard is rife with tension and almost everyone on board is quietly requesting favours from someone up above of 'higher authority'. I note with interest that the owner of Goundar Shipping accompanied the ex-QPR come 'Lomaiviti Princess on the journey to Fiji but apparently took a pass on getting the 'Wack' to her new home in the sun.

For those that missed the News Hour last night, this was the top story... Queen of Chilliwack sold for $1.2 million. Based on the Second Quarter Results (when the 'Wack was sold), I'm guessing $1.2 million actually includes what Goundar spent to prepare the vessel for her trip to Fiji. In my opinion, $1.2 million would be a good return to BCF for the Chilliwack. Shame she didn't continue route 40 until the end of this year though. My question: Could I please have directions to the 'stupid room' as I'm feeling so bereft of intelligence that I just can't take life any more because I've got an I.Q. somewhere north of today's temperature reading, yes, and that's in C not F!

On another forum, someone posted the stupid Global TV 'news' story on the 'Chilliwack, in which the NDP ferry critic showed he doesn't have a clue about the global market for old, inefficient car ferries. The story made it sound vaguely scandalous that BC Ferries spent all that loot on the tub a few years back, when in fact they had to, because the Liberals hadn't yet made their political decision to axe route 40.
And Starsteward, I have to disagree with you on this one. I can understand BC Ferries wanting to withhold the sale price of the 'Chilliwack, although it doesn't seem to have worked. I doubt they could get much for the 'Nanaimo or 'Burnaby in any event, given the fate of the Vs, but the 'Chilliwack's sale could set the bar.

The LP3 is now slated to begin her "new" career next week, as the Fiji Sun explains:fijisun.com.fj/2016/01/13/big-ferrys-launching-date-set/I'm not an official Fiji ferry historian. The LP3 may be the first double-ended ferry ever to serve in the Fiji Islands. It's going to be interesting how she'll be operated there.

Wow, so he's thinking of purchasing the Nanaimo and Burnaby? I sure hope BC Ferries takes more than peanuts this time, especially for the Nanaimo. I'm thinking they'll get more for the Burnaby if they send her to the scrap yard.

I'm thinking they'll get more for the Burnaby if they send her to the scrap yard. Given his engineering/employment background with BC Ferries, one can't blame Mr. Goundar for picking up additional vessels for his shipping company. Having purchased the ex-QPR, which undoubtedly took a fair bit price haggling with BC Ferries, ( remember the 'QPR' sat at Deas for almost 2 years before being sold), Mr. Goundar can hardly be blamed for utilizing all this knowledge, IF, in fact he is interested in purchasing the 'Burnaby' and the 'Nanny' when BC Ferries puts them on the market. Maybe one of our learned members can correct me if I'm in error here, but didn't the Fijian government recently pass a law that forbids the purchase of passenger vessels that exceed 20 years of age? I raise this question as there was chatter about Mr. Goundar squeezing the 'Wack' into the company as he convinced the Fijian officials that the recent costly upgrade done by BCF that met with all of TC's conditions, far exceeded the current, (but being upgraded), level of Fijian safety standards. The possible purchase of the 'Burnaby' and the 'Nanny' at least one to two years down the road is intriguing eh?

I really can't see these ancient B-class vessels ending up on the mostly open waters of the south Pacific around Fiji. They will end up at the Ensenada Recycling Company just like their V-class cousins. BCFS is hallucinating if they think they can get more than pocket change from the sale of those two vessels.

I can't honestly see those 2 old girls running around the south Pacific either, much less making the long open ocean trek to get there. Is BCF then making such a big deal, the secrecy and all, about the selling price of the 'Wack' as to continue to come clean with the actual cost of the recent upgrade and what 'steal' of a price Mr. Goundar negotiated ??

Would have been nice if Mr. Goundar could have splurged on a quickie trip to the "powder room" for the old girl so she could have looked a bit more "Princess-like" for her first jaunt abroad, eh:)?

It does me.
I've sent a general, and, I hope, not disrespectful query about this to Goundar Shipping. If I get a reply, I'll share it here.

The NANAIMO and BURNABY may be out of the running for Mr Goundar's next two purchases as the Fiji Sun explains:fijisun.com.fj/2015/09/16/goundar-shipping-eyes-two-more-vessels/Two from Canada. One from Tahiti. Two future ones projected to be acquired from Norway.
Interesting fleet!
