I have a feeling the New West might not even be running this summer due to the Pandemic. I don’t think this summer we are going to see a full summer schedule my guess would be probably 3 ship service but who really knows I just hope to get on a ferry in the near future!

I think it will be normal summer schedule because BC Ferries hasn’t indicated it won’t with a schedule change plus announcement yet about the summer schedule.

All ferry fans such as myself,I have had a word with the project manager of the new Major vessel replacement, he has told me and I quote the Queen of New Westminister is going to be the kept a few years after the final major vessel replacement vessel is built for the reason that she is in excellent shape for a ship of her age, she has very reliable and relatively good engines with lower hours on them, she also during her huge MLU in 2007/2008 had her engines overhauled and had all asbestos lead paint and PCBs removed where as the Cowichan Coquitlam and Alberni still have some in certain areas, and aswell she can and will be a viable backup as the new major vessel replacements are being worn in and as crew members are slowly getting trained on the new ships, he also has said that if she is determined to be safe and well enough to work she may also be pushed to the Queen of Oak bays And Queen of surreys retirements. If you don't believe me once again my father is a engineer who I can and will trust over someone who does not have a 3rd engineering officers certification and someone who is in charge of the New major vessel replacement which includes the New Westminister. Cheers Jimmy. It’s worth keeping in mind that this is entirely speculative at this point, regardless of source. With the crystal ball foggier than ever, there are a significant number of variables that could impact which vessels are kept, and which are retired. Things like condition assessments, licensing, necessary capacity, fluctuations in traffic, and even politics shape a ferry fleet. Additionally, it’s hard to know what the lasting impact of COVID will have on worldwide shipbuilding - issues with the supply chain or the yard itself could be a factor in all of this, and delay the current newbuild program. It’s good to know, however, that BCFS feels they are getting their money’s worth... many may recall the rather daunting amount of cash and work put into the MLU a little over a decade ago.

Oh I know trust me most of the money spent on the New Wests MLU was in regards to removing the Asbestos lead paint and PCBs

I don't think we'll be back to a full summer schedule. Dane will no doubt be doing a happy dance if the ' New West is kept around. I gather he loves riding her on route one. I would be happy, though. Her car deck is uncomfortably cramped as cars have evolved, or, devolved, depending on your perspective. And she's certainly a shaker, if you're having your lunch in the cafeteria. Still, I'm not looking forward to the end of all the single enders in the fleet, and I do like the layout of the ' New West', post three quarter life refit, or whatever it was called. With the retirement of the North Island Princess, she and the Bowen class vessels make up the elder tribe of BC Ferries. Hope she carries on as long as is operationally sensible.

At this point I'll be so happy when it's a reasonable, socially conscious, decision to even commute on the ferry! (as 95% of my travel is non-essential and replaced by Zoom & Skype, working at least temporarily)

It's tough to use "daunting" in a sentence and have it be an understatement. But somehow, in this context, you pulled it off. The rebuild took an insane amount of cash. And while she seems to still be humming along (though I think she'd be better placed on a different route), we've seen what happens when the clock strikes 60 on ferries just a few hours south of the border. I can't imagine that somehow, even after the extensive rebuild she received, she continues to escape the ravages of time as each additional year passes.

I love the way the New West shakes and rattles when she's pulling out of Tsawwassen...just like the good old days on the V's.

When most of the original 'sisters' were working on route 1, going astern out of Tsawwassen produced high-pitched rattling from the wire grates that filled the void spaces below the railings and the down-posts! That din added to the shudder of the entire vessels made one wonder at times, if the end was nigh.

Why is Queen of New Westminster serving route 1 today when Queen of Alberni is still out of service?

Why is Queen of New Westminster serving route 1 today when Queen of Alberni is still out of service? Because it is the Sunday of Christmas weekend, and despite the pleading of public health officials, people are travelling home from visiting relatives. With route 30's primary duty being for commercial traffic, ridership is likely lower as it is Sunday, and tomorrow for many people is the holiday in lieu of Boxing Day. Coastal Renaissance is still on route 30, which has larger passenger decks compared to Coastal Inspiration. Queen of New Westminster is working an unusual schedule today to cover both routes; it is doing departures from Tsawwassen at 10:15 and 2:15 on route 1, and then a round trip on route 30 departing at 7:15pm. It's been a while since I've seen route 1 departures on the :15, especially considering it's during 4-boat service (meaning there's a 1:15 gap followed by a 0:45 gap in the sailing schedule).

'articulated', I have to take you to task on one point, that being the oft made assertion that route 30 is primarily for commercial traffic. It's true that Tsawwassen and Duke Point have marshalling areas for drop trailers, and there is a significant amount of truck traffic, but you have to keep in mind that the Fraser Valley communities have a large portion of metro Vancouver's population, and a lot of those people- including me, anytime I travelled to the Island over the last thirty years, go via Tsawwassen and Duke Point. Hopefully, one day transit connection to the two terminals will be developed to reflect the potential flow of non-vehicular traffic as well.

It seems like three boat service on route 1 could have handle the traffic over the weekend. There no service about canceling some sailing on route 30 and I feel like maintaining regular service should be priority over additional sailings on another routes that have a least two boat service.

Neil, you are absolutely correct, and I apologize for the sloppy wording in my original post. BC Ferries does try to push more commercial traffic to route 30, which is the intent I had originally been trying to convey. Perhaps with Queen of Coquitlam in service, BC Ferries figured that 2.5 vessels on route 2 would have been enough to make up for the lost capacity on route 30? For the record, I agree that route 30 probably should have kept its regular 2-boat schedule. No reason why customers should have been exposed to 5-hour sailing waits for most of the day. Four vessels on route 1 was also likely overkill, but with the publicity and sharp criticism resulting from the reduced schedules over the summer and subsequent long waits at terminals, I guess BC Ferries wanted to overprovide service between Vancouver and Victoria in case there was a large demand. Damned if you do/damned if you don't situation?

Coastal Renaissance is still on route 30, which has larger passenger decks compared to Coastal Inspiration. I'm curious. Why does Coastal Renaissance have larger passenger decks as compared with its sister ship, Coastal Inspiration? I thought they were the same.

However, depending on the route, the lower passenger deck might be closed-off.

The Queen of New Westminster just docked next to the Salish Eagle at Tsawwassen right now as the Coastal Inspiration was leaving. That is normally the spot that the Salish Raven uses. It is also different that the Queen of New Westminster is arriving at Tsawwassen when the Coastal Inspiration was leaving Tsawwassen. Normally the 2 ferries cross in the middle. Does anyone here know why this is?
Also, the Queen of New Westminster has 2 car levels but that spot is only for 1 level.
The Queen of New Westminster is having mechanical difficulty today. www.bcferries.com/current-conditions/service-notices?serviceNoticeCode=8797831212808&subscriptionRoute=TSA-DUKService notice - Sailing Cancellations- Queen of New Westminster - Mechanical Issues - Vancouver (Tsawwassen) - Nanaimo (Duke Point) Posted: Thursday, April 01, 2021 Update as of 10:10 am: Please be advised that the Queen of New Westminster has cancelled the following sailings due to an ongoing mechanical issue: 10:15 am departing Tsawwassen 12:45 pm departing Duke Point 3:15 pm departing Tsawwassen 5:45 pm departing Duke Point The following sailing have been confirmed : 8:15 pm departing Tsawwassen 10:45 pm departing Duke Point We appreciate your patience and apologize for any inconvenience you may experience as a result of these cancellations.
