Queen of New Westminster will re-enter service on May 24 until May 28 on Tsawwassen to Duke Point. I truly don’t understand the point of her re-entering service only for five days just be taken out of service.

It’s nice to have the two Coastals on Route 30 right now to handle the heavy commercial traffic.

I don’t see demand justify two Coastal on route even before COVID-19. Queen of New Westminster takes over again on June 8, 2021 until June 10, 2021.

Rode the QNW on Wednesday night. Chatting with the deckhand, he says the plan is to try and get another ten years out her. Launched in 1964, not sure how possible this is going to be? He said that Covid-19 has put a crimp on any newbuilds.

He said that Covid-19 has put a crimp on any newbuilds. I did a circle tour last week starting Monday. TSW- Swartz Bay/ then Thursday did Departure Bay-H.S. Bay. Rode my old Queen of New Westminster and had a long chat with the senior Chief Steward and he too stated that BCFS would like to get another 10 years out of the old girl. And he also mentioned that it has been COVID-19 that has put a huge crimp into the overall BCFS rebuilding plan. Overall, the Q of New Westminster appears to be 'aging gently' but there are certain areas of the vessel that will need constant attention, ie. outside decks and the wiring supports on the 'ceilings' on the car decks. Just wondering if 'paulvanb' noticed the presence of the security guards from K-9 security who were mainly patrolling the main passenger decks but were seen on the outside decks as well ? Returned to H.S. Bay on the 'Queen of Oak Bay' and found her outside decks to be in a bit worse for wear condition than the Q. of N.W. Route 2 also has K-9 Security staff onboard.

I’ve also been on the New West in the past few weeks. Her outer decks are quite full usually but inside there was always room for sitting down. The upper snack-bar is still closed but the seating area was open with a TV playing Olympic Surfing which was nice! They’ve also made an adaptation to the mask rule on the announcements stating that masks are recommended and made the comment that “some people’s comfort may not be the same as yours” which I feel was a very proactive way with dealing with people who are very against wearing masks.
I also noticed the K9 support and I’ve never seen it at a terminal before and found it quite strange… but I guess in the name of safety I’m alright with it!

To be honest, I did not spend much time indoors, like most ferry geeks. I did not notice any k-9 support.

K9 Security has been around off and on for over a decade now for Route 1. When I was sailing regularly (so until the start of Covid) I figure about 10% of my sailings had the dog.

The dogs are on and off too. They actually have some great ferry photos on the dog's Instagram account 😂

Only the Langdale Queen (and of course the Steel Electrics) stayed in service longer than that.

Hindsight being 20/20 and all of that, I’ve often wondered if BCF would have been money ahead if they had retired QNW and built a 4th Coastal Class vessel instead. In their defense, I guess they had no idea how much work and $$$ were going to be needed to overhaul New West when they embarked on that endeavor.

It's nice having one of the 7 sisters still in service. I wonder if any of the C's will receive any significant life extensions now that the newbuilds are on hold.

I would highly doubt that because the money would probably be better save for a new build program. I think the C-Class and Queen of New Westminster will see minor upgrades done for next ten years.

FWIW I took this old scow over & back to VI as a foot passenger last week-what a disgraceful excuse for transportation it is I was reminded of certain Fijian trips and-even worse-a certain rough dark night on the Sea of Cortez travelling from Pichilingue to Topolobampo.
The only Good News is that I never paid a nickel.

Not to mention that she's the last of the '60s majors. I'll be very sad to see her go. What's the reason for your contempt? Your post wasn't very informative beyond the vitriol.
