She's looking a little sad these days. Not anywhere near as bad as the Burnaby though!

I found some boxes of old stuff of mine on Orcas the last time we were at the house, and brought those boxes down. In my possession, I found a lot of old postcards, even a few with ferries. This is one of those. This is either Cowichan or Coquitlam at Horseshoe Bay in the 1970's. I'm calling it Cowichan but I am not sure. I think this was a pretty popular postcard, so some of you may know which vessel it is. The postcard does not say. As you can see, the postcard itself is in pretty rough condition.

Queen of Cowichan at rest in Departure Bay, at 6:20am on September 8, 2013. - I'm on the departing C'Renaissance. I really like the mix of orange sunrise glow, and the yellowish lights inside the 'Cowichan.

Now for another Ferry Whistle. Today, the Queen of Cowichan.
Up Next, her Sister Ship...

If the angle of the top edge of the opening of the rescue boat stations were clean, then this would have been the QUEEN OF COWICHAN. The QUEEN OF COQUITLAM had an extra bend in the angle. The rescue boat stations were moved topside recently.

Queen of Cowichan leaving Horseshoe Bay. I am posting these pictures because the low clouds look cool in the photo.

Does anyone know why the Cowichan is going around the North end of Bowen?

Hey Ship trackers!
Keep your eyes on the Queen of Cowichan because she's taking route 2's alternate routing around the North side of Bowen Island and past Langdale. Supposedly this is for training purposes.

Here's another typical Mr. Horn video offering: A familiar ship in a familiar place.
- Queen of Cowichan, as seen from Sugarloaf Mountain in Nanaimo, on a foggy day.
This is morning of January 18, 2014 and features her 10:10am arrival, unloading/loading, and her 10:30am departure.
In the background you can barely see Seaspan Greg in the Nanaimo Seaspan berth. You have to know where to look for her and what she looks like. But once the Bowen Queen arrives in the Gabriola route berth, you can find Seaspan Greg directly behind Bowen Queen's berth. - but it's very hazy.
This is the first time using my Sony RX10 from this location, and I was happy to see that Herr Zeiss' lens allows a wide angle to capture the view from the edge of Brandon Island to the BCF berth #1. A nice wide slice.
Here's the video.

The Queen of Cowichan will not be sailing today.
Coastal Inspiration will be doing an additional round trip on route 30 tonight, the 5:45 ex. Duke Point and the 8:15 from Tsawwassen.

Is the Queen of Coquitlam going to replace her if she is not fixed tomorrow?

The Queen of Cowichan seen entering and leaving Departure Bay from Newcastle Island. She had engine problems earlier in the morning, and subsequently spent the rest of the afternoon attempting (rather unsuccessfully) to make up time. Taken February 2nd, 2014. I was aboard the Cowichan last night while she was trying to make up time from earlier disruptions. I think she was about 25 mins late for the 7:00pm sailing. One thing I found entertaining, was that the "we're arriving at Horseshoe Bay...." announcements were started prematurely. I woke up from my nap and could very much sea the Vancouver city skyline and Lions Gate Bridge out of the side windows. We were abeam of Cowan Point on Bowen Island, which is about 20 mins or so out from Horseshoe Bay. So the lounges cleared up early and the footsies very keenly lined up at the door for the overhead walkway for that entire time. Anyways, I thought I would note some small changes to the Cowichan as of late. Hard to believe that this year will be 10 years since she was given her MLU. Her and the other C's are getting ready to undergo their 3/4 life refits soon. For the most part, things appear to be holding up well in the lounges. However, expected wear and tear on seats, carpet, etc have been evident. The seaweed carpets, green and blue in colour normally, in the forward lounges are now a blended grey colour, also now has a large section of it replaced with fresh carpet with the seams held down with duct tape. Tacky. The exterior and cardeck lighting seems to be upgraded recently. The new lights on the main car deck are more of a blue-ish colour instead of white. But the tunnels have more of a incandescent colour of a fluorescent light. The upper car deck still has the same old lights though. It was hard to capture, but I took a couple of quick photos for what it's worth. This next picture was taken during the 2010 Olympics at the same end (that was the entire vehicle load since footsies dominated the passenger count licence) Also on the upper car deck, they're switching things around with the gates at the ends of the ship. The rub rail was partially removed to allow the gates to swing completely open, allowing a few more inches of space for cars to get through. Plus the gates on the #1 end have been replaced with ugly looking, yet probably much easier to handle, aluminum gates. I'd imagine that the gates on the other end will also be replaced soon, and that the sisters will follow suit if they haven't already.

The Cowie was the first C-class I ever sailed on, back in '77 when I was 8. She seemed so impossibly huge and modern then, especially with her escalators and the angular shaped seating, done in orange and yellow naugahide.

6:38am scene from Pipers Lagoon park in Nanaimo, on March 23, 2014. That ferry is Queen of Cowichan, headed for Horseshoe Bay. Heading the other way is the tug ISLAND CROWN towing a fuel barge, destined for the fuel bulk tanks at Newcastle Channel. That's how us islanders get our gasoline. - the Sunday 1st-sailing is perfect for sophisticated ship-enthusiasts who want an early start on a full day of ship photography.

A video of mine, shot in the evening on March 30, 2014 at Departure Bay beach, Nanaimo.
Featuring Queen of Cowichan and CCGS W.E. Ricker. The 'Ricker was roaming the Georgia Strait area for a few days, and during my evening visit she started out moored at the Pacific Biological Station dock. Then, at the same time as the "Traffic Delayed" 'Cowichan was leaving Departure Bay, the 'Ricker left its mooring and moved to the middle of the bay to drop anchor there.
So this video has footage of both ships separately and in the same frame.

I remember when that fuel farm caught fire in 1978. We had our boat moored at The Anchorage Marina, which is very close to those tanks. Some tense hours that day.

Yes, a very bad day in Nanaimo's history. Arson, which killed the man who set the fire (a disgruntled employee) and also killed a fireman.

Yeah, that was intense. I seem to remember people saying that the fire was so hot the water right near it was boiling, or something like that (I was only 9, so....).
