Time for another Walkthrough. Today's Subject: the Queen of Surrey. It's great when you have the winning formula, like Curtis does for his walkaround videos. I'm always curious to see how and when he'll do his signature line of "Welcome Aboard." You know that as soon as a life-ring is in sight, he'll focus on it and then you get the formal start to the video. Always done well. Bravo!

A few more from yesterday. I was really happy with the lighting. Monday the Queen of Coquitlam takes over, so I'll definitely be getting some more photos. We've been getting some great weather lately, so that's one more reason to get down there and enjoy the experience. Some nice lighting on the mountains: Bonus shot, the Stormaway IV getting some air in the Surrey's wake:

obviously not as the Coquitlam is still running according to the current conditions. Surrey is suppose to be back by next weekend though!

An update on the Queen of Surrey:
She will not return to route 3 until at least March 26th. My understanding is that a bunch of certificates are expiring this year, and need to be renewed.

Surrey was taken out of service mid-day yesterday (26 Aug 14) and still hasn't returned. The Coquitlam is running as a lone vessel on a "modified" schedule (which is the old summer schedule from 2005-2009). Do we have any information on what's wrong and when the vessel is forecasted to return? Could be ugly if she isn't running for the long weekend.

She was pulled from service due to issues with the clutch (typical C-Class). She is expected to be back in service on Friday. As a result of the modified schedule, some sailings are canceled on Thursday. More info: ferriesbc.proboards.com/thread/8980/2014-bcfs-service-notice-thread?page=2

Every few hours, BC Ferries vessels meet off of Horseshoe Bay. Yesterday, I took a boat out of Sewell's Marina in Horseshoe Bay and went out for a quick run to a dock on Gambier Island and back. On the way there, I stopped off of Bowyer Island (well away from the Surrey's path) to snap a few pictures. I also like this perspective from the waterline: With better lighting, and with the Queen of Capilano: Queens of Surrey and Oak Bay off of Horseshoe Bay by Howe Sound Ferries, on Flickr

Life on the Coast... beautiful. Queen of Surrey en route to Langdale this morning, 0920 sailing. There is snow at sea level. I'm still learning the ropes on my relatively new D5200 - my impulse is to shoot auto. But when you own a $700 camera, it's a good idea to learn how to work the Shutter/Aperture/ISO triangle. It's a skill you never get perfect at. In my opinion, the better you are at it, the less post processing needs to be done to bring a photo up to standard. Today was a great day for photography in Howe Sound. I almost regretted having breakfast right away, and not heading straight outside. The strong northerly outflow- seen through big whitecaps and long wave periods, indicated winds of about 30 knots. That combined with the -3 Celsius temperature (in still air) kept me inside for the first half of the crossing. But hey, one's gotta eat. Life on the Coast - beautiful. by Howe Sound Ferries, on Flickr One more shot worth sharing here - that's Mt. Elphinstone we're looking at. The ship is almost abeam of Twin Islands, the ten minute mark of the crossing as I like to call it. In other words, there is ten minutes until arrival at this point. Howe Sound, Mt. Three recent photos of the Surrey. I took a trip on her first day back from refit, and saw her a couple days ago from the arriving Coquitlam. The Cap't went 21 knots all the way to Langdale for whatever reason, which ended up having us wait for the Surrey to clear the berth. Regardless of the cause, it presented some unique photo opportunities. First, fresh from refit. Deas crews did a really thorough paint job this year, despite the bare-bones budget: Langdale ferry fresh out of refit by Howe Sound Ferries, on Flickr And finally, that shot from the Coquitlam... Of course, I couldn't forget the Queen of Surrey. Here's a photo of the vessel showing just how steep those cliffs are: M/V Queen of Surrey by Howe Sound Ferries, on Flickr Taken on Good Friday, April 3rd 2015.

Some fresh photos of Queen of Surrey arriving in Horseshoe Bay. January 18th, 2016. Arriving in berth 3 - the main Sunshine Coast berth. Quite rare for the Langdale vessel to dock in the other berths, particularly berth 1. Queen of Surrey arriving into Vancouver Drydock for Part 1 of her 3/4 life refit this morning and into the afternoon. She arrived around 10:00am this morning, but wasn't fully out of the water until about 2:30pm. I went back and forth to the Lonsdale pier a few times to check up on things and take a picture since this turned out to be a long process. They also moved the Seaspan Careen drydock off the jetty for the drydocking, and they waited until the ship was fully out of the water until moving the floating drydock back alongside the pier. This was likely done to have the ship and everything point into the wind, to ease the stress of trying to line the hull up on to the blocks perfectly. Normally this is a much faster process to drydock a ship using the larger, Panamax sized drydock. The SOBC was high and dry literally within an hour or two a few weeks ago for comparison. Enjoy! PS: I wish I had the means of doing a timelapse for this.
