I have noticed that BCF has 2 auto decks and WSF has 1, and 3 BCF has the M/V Spokane and M/V Walla Walla look to them, like the Coquitlam, the Spokane and wally has the pickle forks, i have to say these are my favorite boats in BCF's The Queens of Coquitlam & Cowichan designs were based on the Jumbo Spokane and Walla Walla. No coincidence, it is same design theme. ...and I am STILL convinced the Cowichan and Coquitlam were originally designed and built for the NDP's proposed Iona Island - Gabriola route, which I believe was scuttled by the Socreds when they were re-elected in 1975, but I probably shouldn't re-open that can of worms...

It's not a can of worms, at least insofar as the boats are concerned.. they were for Iona-Gabriola. Hence the ridiculously small passenger area for boats with such a large vehicle capacity and lack of ancillary services. SFU has all the planning documents in their Burnaby Mountain Library and the annual reports of the day speak to the temporary assignments for the Cow / Coqu when they entered service.
What I always find a bit interesting is why there Surrey and Oak Bay were built as essentially duplicates of the limited passenger deck designs when by their order that shorter crossing plan was dead.
In the telling of BC Ferries history that gets figuratively passed down I think how close Iona - Gabriola was to being a reality gets really understated.

I was around at that time and I remember very well the discussion. Dane, your assessment is right on the money. The new route to the Gabriola terminal was to have crossed over Dodd Narrows, across Mudge Island, and over False Narrows onto Gabriola. We had a cabin on Mudge in the 70's, and I remember the throughway for the new road had been cleared from the west side to the east, and the land along both sides had been bought up and subdivided by then Nanaimo mayor Frank Ney's Nanaimo Realty, under the pretense that these lots would skyrocket in value once the new road and bridges were open. I can still remember seeing the Nanaimo Realty signs along both sides of the cleared area. I believe this project was killed by the Socreds when they got re-elected in 1975, much like how the Liberals killed the fastcats when they were elected.

I really wish that BC Ferries would make it standard operating procedure that, on the C class vessels, the centre four car lanes are unloaded as the crew on the Queen of Alberni does it- cars alternating, as opposed to a whole lane at a time. I'm assuming that all the Cs have the same crew complement, and they certainly have the exact same lane dimensions... narrow. But whenever the 'Coquitlam is filling in on route 30, the deckhands simply stand up front and watch as people carefully thread their often big wide vehicles down the lanes and off. The system on the 'Alberni is great, and I don't know why it can't be replicated on her sister ships. I'm sending an email to head office, and I'll share the response here. (Apologies for somewhat duplicating a gripe I made here a few months back. I should have checked.)

Does anyone have a version of the Queen of Coquitlam/Queen of Oak Bay's whistle that i could use for a horn battle on YouTube(And Give Credit) If you were using a recent recording of the two vessels, the Coquitlam's whistle on the number two end would likely win. You may use one of my recordings if you'd like.

Do you guys think the Coquitlam's whistle is sounding wonky these days? As she sounds her horn when she comes into Departure Bay she's a bit discordant.

Guess this one is too late for this month. She is obscured by a dock - a drydock! 😉

Queen of Coquitlam is tied up at Departure Bay. She won’t enter service on route 2 in November.

Queen of Coquitlam is tried up at Departure Bay. She won’t enter service on route 2 in November. Ok, the Queen of Coquitlam is 'tied' up at Departure Bay, I get that point. Please clarify the second sentence. Thanks.

A short while ago on the Queen of Cumberland thread ... ferriesbc.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=intermediate&action=display&thread=7352... we were discussing 'lifting arms' (gates) that once graced either end of the car deck on both the Q Cumber & the Q Cappie. That led to discussion on other vessels that have sported similar apparatus. The 'C' class vessels (all, except the Alberni) once had lifting arms on the upper car decks. To be correct, the original two ( Cowichan & Coquitlam) actually were equipped with lifting 'arches'. The photo below was taken on 6 April 1977, when the Queen of Coquitlam had been in service for just a few months. The arches are shown in use. They looked rather graceful. A smaller version of the photo is currently serving as my 'sig pic'. thats hilarious because April 6th is my birthday 🎂
