I hope this qualifies as an historic photograph I guess that Peter Favelle was right in writing that cargo was slung on and off the Island Princess in his definitive book " The Qeens of British Columbia", though only for large vehicles other than those not able to drive on or off this first Ro/Ro vessel on our coast apparently.

Yeah, though for years on the Blubber Bay-Westview run, it was crew only, though you could always get coffee if you asked.

Tonight I have some pre-digital pics of the NIP from a foggy late August morning in 1993. All photos were taken at or just off of Westview Terminal, Powell River, while I waited for the Queen of Sidney to come and pick me up for the crossing to Comox. Approaching the terminal... lol...that's Teddy Fox's dump truck in the port over height lane. Who might Teddy Fox be? An old neighour, in all senses of the word. Having seen that particular truck many times in my life, I recognized immediately.

Thanks for those great vids Ship-Rider 16. It is nice to see a detailed tour of a boat not often publicised.
Who needs diets when you can run around a ferry! ;D I didn't think a little boat like that would have so many stairs! I counted about 70.

Three more from Salt Spring Archives Galiano gallery... Island Princess heading into Active Pass from Steveston Arriving at Ganges And here's an interesting shot.... arriving at Sturdies Bay, and in the distance you can see either the ' Sidney or ' Tsawwassen heading east, so that puts this very early '60s.

Island Princess heading into Active Pass from Steveston Arriving at Ganges And here's an interesting shot.... arriving at Sturdies Bay, and in the distance you can see either the ' Sidney or ' Tsawwassen heading east, so that puts this very early '60s. Nice pictures of the ferry my late Danish-born grandfather helped built. Interesting to see the horizontal steel pieces installed over the forward windows to protect them from the hoisting equipment.

Considering the Island Princess, I just had this curious thought about what her interior was like back when she was the old inter-island cargo ship/ferry. Of course she had four staterooms, but I wonder what her other amenities might have been, if any. Certainly, i would think her interior spaces might have been a little more appealing and soft than the molded plastic seating she has in her current configuration.

The NIP route was Kelsey Bay to Beaver Cove. Once the Island highway was extended (~1979) via the inland route from Sayward to Beaver Cove this service was discontinued, and the Inside Passage route southern terminal was moved to Bear Cove. The ferry slip that 'Northern Exploration' saw was likely the old facilities at Beaver Cove. Up until sometime between the summer of '72 and the summer of '73 the Island Princess went from Kelsey Bay to Beaver Cove, Alert Bay, and Sointula. At that time, the route was split, with (I believe) the Nimpkish taking over the Alert Bay and Sointula portion. Don't know when the Beaver Cove terminal was switched to Port MacNeill.summer '72: summer '73:

Do all ferries have these antennae, here on the port side? It looks like they couldn't afford cable TV for the bridge- I recall those on our roof forty years ago. Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't the North Island Princess the only minor vessel to have its own 'mini-brige', facing aft? I'm assuming that it's because there is zero stern visibility from inside the main bridge when they're backing into Powell River.
