A recent find, a slide of the Island Princess, taken a few years before her big makeover. Sadly there is no photographer listed on the slide to credit...or any location info. Simply stamped October 1967. This might be at Alder Bay, just north of Beaver Cove, and south of Port McNeill. Using what is left of my grey matter between my ears, definitely not Alert Bay or Sointula. Don't think it is your Alder Bay, but I would still say Beaver Cove.

Beaver Cove was the end of the road heading south from Port Hardy.

During her career with Coast Ferries, the Island Princess- as far as I know- served on three runs; Steveston to the Gulf Islands and maybe Sidney, Steveston to Comox and Powell River, and the north Island run out of Kelsey Bay. If the picture doesn't show Beaver Cove, the only other possibility would be somewhere in the Gulf Islands. Pre-BC Ferries, North Pender had a terminal at either Port Washington or Hope Bay. Don't know if there might have been another now defunct dock other than Montague.

From the BC Backroads map, Beaver Cove is accessed by Beaver Cove Road, just before Telegraph Cove. I wonder if there's any trace of the old dock.

This is where Google Maps satellite view is your friend. I use that site a lot, when researching my railway hikes and when creeping on my co-workers. I would say X marks the spot for the old terminal.

When did the North Island Princess lose life boats? I can narrow down between 1990 and 1993 based on photos from WettCoast.

For the photo I posted yesterday I gave a date of "circa 1990". Circa means some time around about 1990. Nevertheless, your posting tells me that the photo posted yesterday was for sure taken after 1986 & before 1993.

This photo would date from about a year after the radical surgery that turned this vessel into a catamaran, and three years before the word 'North' was added to her name.

Wow, I have never seen her in this livery before! This was three years after we moved from Port Hardy to Duncan. My last memory of riding her was a funnel painted blue after her purchase by BC Ferries.

This is a great shot! I regret not ever being able to travel on her after her extensive upgrade. We moved to Duncan in 1969 from Port Hardy, then moved to the mainland in 1970. Until the early 1980's, I think I only rode the feries twice in that timespan.

My brother David's artwork comparing the (North) Island Princess before and after its catamaran-ization in 1971. I believe that this was commissioned by the marine architect/design company CEL (Case Existological Laboratories) who were in charge of the project for BC Ferries.
After 1971 this vessel had a few other changes beyond having 'North' added to its name. The lifeboats were removed & we know approximately when that happened. It also gained a pair of funnels just at the aft end of the superstructure. I don't know when that change came, and how exhaust was discharged prior to those funnels (may have been as it was on the Powell River class trio).
