North Island Princess seen at sunset/dusk at Westview. - June 8, 2013. I am at the top of the barge-port driveway, on Marine Dr. North Island Princess has unloaded her Texada traffic, and now has to vacate the berth to allow the incoming Queen of Burnaby to use the berth. - afterwards, the 'Princess goes back into the berth to load for her trip to Texada (which might include some transfer traffic from the 'Burnaby). - I think there is a fuel truck on board the 'Princess for the interlude. The waiting while the 'Burnaby is in the berth. 'Burnaby leaves, and 'Princess heads for the berth. NIP backing into the berth Loading Texada traffic Headed for Texada Island

Great photos of the North Island Princess. Thanks to this technology, I can come to an absolute confirmation that this vessel will be safe to operate for another 45 years.

North Island Princess and Queen of Burnaby at sunset on June 8, 2013. - Westview (Powell River).
VIDEO of the entire 90-minute sunset/dusk sequence (sped up, of course). 3 different parts of the video. 1) Entire sequence, sped-up 50x 2) Entire sequence, sped-up 10x (that's what the subtitles were geared for). 3) Real-speed sequence of Burnaby's departure and NIP's departure.

I wasn't happy with the speeds of the version of my sped-up video of "Powell River ferry sunset." 100x was too fast and 10x was too slow, for my liking. So I've done a new one at 25x speed. - I like this speed better.
Here it is, featuring North Island Princess and Queen of Burnaby, from June 8 2013.

I got some new Intel over the weekend, but I sort of want to verify it's veracity. Does anyone recall an episode at some point in the mid nineties where North Island Princess had to have major (maybe even complete) steel replacement in both of her hulls due to steel deterioration?

I don't really have a photo that does it justice, but the NIP has received a change to her paint scheme: from midship forward, an area that was formerly painted white along the base of the ship where the superstructure meets the hull, is now painted black, creating a smooth black edge. However, since the name was painted on crooked and was not corrected when this repainting took place, the S in Princess (Starboard) and N in North (Port) now nearly touch the black area. Compare the paint scheme here with my other photo above... MV North Island Princess by MileagePhoto, on Flickr

I always found it weird how the hull was shaped on the NIP.

I suspect that's why she's still in service: on paper she is 55 years old, but a large majority of her steel was replaced during that rebuild.

Since she emerged as a practically new ship in 1971, it's more accurate to say her hull is only 42 years old. For the most part, her superstructure is 55 years old.

What does it mean saying the NIP has been 'promised' to Port Hardy? I don't understand. Maybe it means there is a long term plan in the works to replace the Nimpkish with the North Island Princess but then they would need a fourth new vessel for Texada Island, unless they plan to do a triangle service once a replacement for the Burnaby is built. I always seem to remember things I've said and have lots of after thoughts. In this case, I was considering vessel allocation, particular for when the Tenaka finally retires. Since there have been some reports about squishy sailing on the Tachek when she does the Cortes run, maybe they might consider swapping the Tachek out for the North Island Princess. Any of the times I've ridden either the North Island Princess or the Tachek on the Texada run, they seem to run virtually empty. I'm having trouble imagining when either one would ever be at capacity on that run, when the Cortes run sounds like the Tachek frequently puts the squeeze on cars. Why not make the Tachek the permanent ship on the Texada run, and send the North Island Princess up to Quadra Island? The only really difficulty I can see would be that the berth at Heriot Bay might be a bit tricky to get in to since the North Island Princess is a little wide in the beam.

Ernie, you need to look at the space utilization figures in the annual reports. The NIP is far too big for Cortes, and Tachek would be insufficient at Texada, far too often. What is 'squishy sailing'? The Hornby run has had more difficulties in the winter through losing Tachek, and having Kahloke year round.

I've been on the Tachek many times when it's busy, and I drive a large car. Exiting your vehicle is no more an issue than on a number of other vessels. In any event, it would be more of a consideration if the Tachek was serving Texada, where it would be full a lot more often than at Cortes.

My pics from May 2009: Gordon Wilson's group "Fiscal Fairness for Coastal Communities" really likes my photo of the North Island Princess. - It's all over their facebook site.... linkI'm flattered that they like my photo, but I'm not impressed with their disregard for the photographer (me). Probably another instance of Google image search and steal, without it occurring to them that they really should have determined who the photographer is and asked permission or at least gave a photo credit.

I wanted to press the 'Don't Like' button, but they don't have one of those; too bad.
It's not that I don't like your post, either, Mr. Horn. But I do not like people or organizations (no matter how 'worthy' their cause) that use photos of mine or yours (or anyone else's for that matter) without getting permission & without showing credit.

One thing that's very interesting to note is that when you do the google images search it comes up not on Picasa like I would be expecting it but rather on BCFs's website on their "vessels charters" page. Flugel, did you give them the authorization at all or is that another stolen photo?
