Far away photos into the sun, so the quality is poor. But the subject is the reason for posting these 3 pictures. - MV Quinsam at Duke Point terminal, on Saturday August 13th. Photos from the route-2 ferry.

Thanks for taking some real photos of Quinsam at Duke. - my camera was really challenged for the distance, movement and sunlight on Saturday morning. I was thinking that you'd probably get to Jack Point for the opportunity.

Could you get on the Quinsam at Duke Point as a Foot Passenger??? lol! I think we should try that as our next forum trip. Or we could all hike out to Jack Point to get pictures of the Quinsam.

a route 1 route 30 and a Quinsam trip depending on if you can get on her at Duke Point as a foot passenger!

a route 1 route 30 and a Quinsam trip depending on if you can get on her at Duke Point as a foot passenger! There's no reason that you wouldn't be able to catch the Quinsy as a footie at Duke. People with bicycles use the lower car deck ramp to embark/disembark the Inspy and Alberni, so it's just logical that they would do the same now on the Quinsam.

But then you would probably have to go through the vehicle toll booth then as I dont think you could buy a foot passenger ticket at foot passenger booths! I wonder how long it would take if she went from Departure Bay to Gabriola??

It should take about 8-10 minutes extra, per direction, for the Quinsam to run from Departure Bay instead of Duke Point. Quinsam's schedule is already badly disrupted due to berth contention at Duke Point. Adjusting the schedule to run from Dep Bay with allowances for the greater trip time might be an improvement than being at the mercy of route #30.

I wonder how long it would take if she went from Departure Bay to Gabriola?? You just buy your ticket at the footie entrance, then instead of going up the main ramp to the berth, you take the secondary skywalk and the stairs down to lower ramp level, as seen in this Flugel pic: I'm referring to the skywalk on the left.

Yeah you would think but what I am saying is the booths might not be set up for the Gabriola route at Duke Point cause they figure if you can take a water taxi from downtown Nanaimo why would you go through Duke Point.

I did some research, and yes you are allowed to ride on the Quinsam as a Passenger still. It's likely just not encouraged, since the path to the berth isn't the most desirable route. The stairwell is likely just for terminal staff only. There's actually a path that goes from the parking lot down to the main vehicle ramp. It's not exactly the most friendly way of getting down there for some folks (elderly/disabled, etc). This is the route that people with bikes, and kayaks, and dogs will take when boarding a Route 30 vessel. You can see the path in one of Karl's photos. It begins from that center parking lot beside the main terminal building. I was wondering if the Scholarship was deployed as the water taxi from Downtown Nanaimo to Gabriola when I hadn't seen her in her home berth in Ganges for a few days. Nice little water taxi. I travelled on her from Village Bay, Mayne Island to the ferry dock in Long Harbour August long weekend of 2010. I remember when the ramp at Nanaimo Harbour was being replaced in the summer of 1997/8. The Quinsam had to run from Duke Point, and BC Ferries offered coupons for discounted fare in the brochure rack to encourage people to use that routing. That was back during a time when the company wanted to close Nanaimo Harbour down, and have the Quinsam use a secondary berth that could have been built at Duke Point, which there is still infrastructure for today. Wish I kept a copy of that. The regular excuse for not wanting Nanaimo harbour to close was the close convenience of the terminal to the nearby shopping mall. It's easy for folks to get groceries as a foot passenger, and also convenient with bus routes which Duke Point still doesn't have for some reason.

Thank You, I am glad to be here.
You don't have to give me $1million dollars (But I would take it anyway). It is just a strange sight. So used to watching the ship go into downtown.

I live in Nanaimo and I also enjoy the sight of the Gabriola ferry coming towards Nanaimo, past Gallows Point, and into the harbour. I enjoy seeing it from many different locations....and I think I've posted photos from many of those locations. - from up the hill at VIU - from above Westwood Lake - from the harbourfront walkway - from Gallows Point itself.

The Quinsam's temporary route to Duke Point terminal afforded me a photo-opportunity from Jack Point. And I took advantage of that, this morning on a lovely summer day.... All photos from same spot at the end of Jack Point, because I was too lazy to get up and explore different angles for the departing Quinsam. ;D Quinsam emerges from around the corner from me. Keeping my focus through the summer grass It was a busy day for boat traffic in Northumberland Channel. Usually that's because of tide-conditions at nearby Dodd Narrows, resulting in some traffic jams. Many sailboats headed for Nanaimo harbour.

:)looks like the early riser in the hub city gets the photographic delites! these are striking immages of the early bird! good work mr. horn, before my brother went north again, we did a full day's cruising the gulf islands, and our trip home to Tsawwasssen on the Long Hbr. boat was delightful in this late summer climate and I expect brother wettcoast will file some good shots! I have made good use of my gold seniors card for the seventh time since I came of age, and it worked well on the gulf islands junket, and it was like revisiting my old Mayne Queen days, of the late 1960's! :)mrdot.
