The rarest of occurrences; a final departure of a former BC Ferries vessel that you can feel good about. She doesn't fit BC Ferries' needs anymore, but she's staying in BC, going to a company that has a lot of experience working with old boats, and she's going to be re-purposed in a way that I think most of us boat fans will find pretty interesting.
Thanks for the photos, Mike, and bon voyage to a really cool little ferry. Smooth sailing in Barkley Sound.

As much as I like the fact that this vessel will continue to serve British Columbians, I strongly feel that it could just as well have remained in the BCF fleet serving on the Central Coast (i.e. the Discovery Coast Connector) until a new vessel is available. It would have made possible at least a little bit better service to the folks who use that route and to visitors journeying into the area. One part of our coast gains while another looses.

Gonna miss seeing her in Heriot Bay every summer. What's her replacement on the Cortez run?

I partially agree. It would have been a definite step up in terms of passenger lounges. With regard to vehicles and mitigating the loss of the ' Chilliwack's capacity, the improvement would have been marginal. I've read that one of the losses for the central coast has been in terms of Europeans bringing RVs, and the Tenaka would have been able to carry one more RV than the Nimpkish. 21 cars instead of 16... yes, a small improvement, but in terms of the actual need, probably not significant to the central coast economy. Maybe there were also operational reasons we're not aware of.

The TENAKA passed Bamfield at 2308PDT (I think the clock on this site is using PST). Not too much lights to offer. That light ahead of her is a flashing one. Up the channel she goes to Port Alberni. Many thanks to this webcam site. Visit this one!www.bamfieldmsc.com/webcam

Scott, thanks for getting those photos. Much appreciated.
She's closer to the donut shop than I thought she'd be. I think her spot will eventually be taken over by the Frances Barkley when Frances becomes the secondary ship. And then Tenaka will get the spot at the main dock.

Since according to the pics she seems to be nameless lol Lady Rose Marine Services has a history of renaming their ships (well, 1-for-1 record in renaming Rennessoy to Frances Barkley). So it wouldn't surprise me if they renamed Tenaka with something related to her new geographical market.

Choosing a name that has an historical connection with its new service area would be good, I think.

Does anyone know where her snack bar was when she was the Comox Queen and is it still their and just covered u? Or does it not exist anymore? It is located on the aft and of either the port or starboard saddle-lounge (can't remember which one). It is currently (or was with BCF) a crew galley.

ALBERNI LEGACY is the name. ex TENAKA ex COMOX QUEEN -------------- info sent to me by the awesome Kather Anne. Source is official of course, from HEREI am sort of anticipating a wave of not-so-positive reviews of this name choice, but it sounds to me like this is a name that is meant to appeal more to their tourism market. "Legacy" sort of invokes a cruise ship for seniors with an on board casino, does it not...? If I may channel J Peterman from Seinfeld for a moment, "she will always be Tenaka to me."

"Legacy" sort of invokes a cruise ship for seniors with an on board casino, does it not...? Well, without the casino, you've described a typical trip on the MV Frances Barkley.

Merriam-Webster says:
So this ship name draws attention to the history, heritage, legacy of those ships that have gone before in the passenger & freight trade in Alberni Inlet and Barkley Sound: - Lady Rose - the various Uchucks - Frances Barkley
And this ship will continue the legacy of passenger & freight ships providing "Boat Day" to various remote locations that depend on the ship for freight and passenger travel.
As I've said many times before, if you want to experience what it was like with coastal steamers being the life-line of isolated communities (ie. the Union Steamship and CP BCCS era), then take a trip on the ships of Lady Rose Marine Services or of Nootka Sound Service.

....And while a theme name like "Northern Adventure" evokes a disgust at the corporate killing of marine heritage at BCFS, a name like "Alberni Legacy" is genuine.
The owners and operators of the 'Legacy know their maritime heritage, because they are part of it. The pastel peach & green building on Argyle St. is a far cry from the BC Ferries Atrium office or the old "Queen of Fort Street."
The owner undoes the ship's line at the start of the voyage, and catches the line-toss at the end of every voyage. It's as hands-on and non-corporate as it gets. The legacy of Lady Rose Marine Services is real. The name of their ship means something real. - They demonstrate that every day.

Comox Tenaka Barkley Queen or CTBQ for short. Nope - not even close... I trust that you did not interpret my name 'suggestion' as being serious? Member roeco asked this question: No one on this forum would have any clue as to what name would actually be chosen. The choice of a name is totally up to the new owner. The CTBQ name I tossed out there was intended to be an attempt at humour ...
As for the new name, I'll get used to it. I was rather hoping for something more like the name Frances Barclay, that honours a women who along with her husband, played a very important role in the early European history of the west coast of Vancouver Island.
