My final set of Tenaka photos from Heriot Bay on Oct.13, 2013. Tenaka in the berth and loading for her 6:45pm trip to Cortes Island. - Headlights of vehicle are shown on deck. ------------- Underway, showing some of her lights. - I love this view, as the ship is taking the sharp turn out of Heriot Bay.

From the Cable-ferry thread: - an excerpt: ...Kimmerly claims that expected cost savings in the project have vanished. Somewhat curiously, he adds, "Ferries is just finishing the business case to rebuild the Tenaka."If this is true, then at some point the proposal needs approval by the Ferry Commissioner. - I check the Commissioner's website regularly, and so I'd note any new applications. (none done, so far) So we don't know for sure what things BCF is considering, but the Commissioner would eventually be involved, and we'd find out at that point.

I'm trying to understand how they would connect cost overruns and a lack of Request for Proposals for the Denman cable ferry project to be an indicator that BCFerries even has plans to rebuild the Tenaka, unless there is knowledge that is not being shared.

BCFMWU did a Freedom-of-Information request to BC Ferries in May 2013, asking about a business case for doing a Tenaka rebuild.
The FOI request has been discontinued, according to the BCFS website.

I thought I might have been considered a conspiracy theorist if I had suggested someone should do an FOI request. Maybe they were able to figure out a cost analysis for themselves and realized they already had the answer.

This evening, I visited Quadra Island for the purpose of getting some night-time photos of Tenaka at Heriot Bay. Here they are. Not the greatest quality, but they are the darkest photos of Tenaka that we've seen on this forum, so far. So enjoy this unique (to us) view of her, as she departs Heriot Bay on her 5:05pm sailing to Cortes Island. ---------------------------- This is the fourth time that I've posted Tenaka departure photos from this location in the past 5 months, but this is the darkest that the lighting has ever been for me. Nice reflections in the water How convenient that a vehicle driver on the ship's Port side has his Red brake lights on....

My video of Tenaka at dusk and in darkness. - at Heriot Bay, on November 13, 2013.
I wanted to see and film her in the dusk/darkness, to see what she looks like with all her lights on.

Tenaka in berth at Heriot Bay, on Nov.13, 2013. - seen from the Government wharf. -------------- The time around sunset has such a rapid decline in light (well, duh). - Sunset was at 4:40pm on the day that I took these photos. Here she is at 4:46pm ...and here she is at 5:09pm

Stunning photos, Mike. It's amazing what a Canon SX10/20 can do! For my Nov.13th Tenaka photos, I used my wife's FujiFilm FinePix HS25EXR point & shoot. - it's got a newer and better sensor than my Canon SX10IS. I used my Canon for video, and then shot stills with the Fuji. So it was a 2-camera event for me. I think that in those Nov.13 dusk & dark light conditions, my wife's Fujifilm outdid what my Canon would have been able to do with still photos.

Thanks Mr. Coulson. Those are good photos of one very picturesque little ferry; the nicest one on our coast, I think.

Just something interesting, which other people may or may not have already noticed, but if one was to go to www.marinetraffic.com/en/ (which is an AIS tracking site) and zoom in to the BC Coast section and find Tenaka in Whaletown, right now, you can click on her little symbol and it brings up a nice little, up to date profile of the ship that also features a nice photo attributed to John H (tada!). You're famous, John.

January 5th, 2014More perspectives of the Tenaka. We picked a great day to sail, because on our way to Cortes, the sun cleared up. As much as I'm fond of Tenaka, I cannot believe that BC Ferries is considering a life extension for this vessel, as suggested in the BC Ferry Commissioner's approval of the Denman cable ferry project.
Tenaka spent several months at Fraser Shipyard three or four years ago getting a major overhaul, including replacement of hull steel. She subsequently went back for more work. I believe the initial stay cost in the neighborhood of $15 million. Now they're thinking of more major work? This is lunacy, and very much false economy, when the total money spent so far and possibly in the near future would easily have built a new vessel of the same size, or- heaven forbid- slightly larger.
BC Ferries is saying that the North Island Princess is beyond renewal. Tenaka is only five years younger, and is of very limited value in the system, given the few routes she can adequately serve.
Apparently there are some deep thinkers at BC Ferries who feel that fixing an existing vessel suggests prudence and economy. Over the long haul, it is an extremely bad idea when you're talking about a boat of Tenaka's vintage. The sensible and honest decision would be to build new.

Here's the excerpt of the cable ferry documents that mention the Tenaka possibility. I think the 2nd paragraph is key: it would only be considered if the benefits outweigh any other replacement strategy. I think that it would be tough for BCFS to make a good business case in favour of extending the Tenaka life.

A nice snow-background photo of Tenaka is on this month's cover of the "Discovery Islander." see HERE Yes, a super shot of the Tenaka! That said, talk about a well put together community newspaper! In an age where many local papers are shutting their doors the "Discovery Islander" provides a real grass roots link with the folks in the community and surrounding areas. Back in the day, local papers whether they were daily, weekly or monthly sometimes had a section called 'community gossip' that was usually a must-read for all those who really needed to know what was really going on.
