From an archived 2006 forum post, done by member Retro: ============================= I noticed this pic in the second(?), expo livery, version of "B.C. FERRIES - Exploring British Columbia's Coastal Waterways - A Complete Pictorial Study of B.C.'s Ferry Fleet (including sea and land maps)" (There is no copyright notice) Photography and design by John L. Barnard (Except a few that are credited in the book)

I find it kind of odd I didn't notice it before, but this is the first time I noticed that she used to have lifeboats. Just thought I'd point that out, it does kind of distinguish her from the other minors. Though I guess I'd have to look at pictures of the others to confirm that.

Actually, they all had lifeboats originally, even the Garibaldi, Nimpkish and Nicola.

She looks like she's going really fast there, skimming the surface like a hydrofoil!

I'm keeping my place in Dickens' Barnaby Rudge with this Tenaka, another Christmas creation from my daughter Laura.

Regarding northern minor vessels: - Tachek's life-extension renovations (similar to what was done with QQII) will maybe be done 2 years from now. - Tenaka is currently in refit, and will take longer than expected due to some unforeseen items. (above per chat with Tachek crew today and is subject to my clarity of recalling the conversation). Did you get any dire predictions regarding Tenaka's future, as I heard from a Tachek crewman a while back? I know that what we get told by ferry crew has to be taken with a grain of salt. Tenaka's last refit was also vastly longer than originally planned- I believe the return to service was delayed at least three times. And now this one, again more involved than they'd thought. All this for a 47 year old vessel that only carries 22-24 cars. I'd like to see the final bill, all in, and compare it to what they might have been able to get a new vessel for. (ps- are we now going to have separate threads for vessel photos and discussion? The photo only aspect of this area is somewhat limiting...)

I asked if the Tenaka was still scheduled for early retirement, and a crew member said "2014 or so".
- I asked if that was dependent on the cable-ferry idea becoming reality (re the resulting vessel shuffle) and he kinda laughed, so I think the cable-ferry might be seen as a pipe-dream.

A photo of the aft end of the Comox Queen... Tied up at Westview (I think?) - 19 August 1972. I was aboard the Queen of the Islands which was then on the Comox to Powell River run. Too bad that I do not seem to have a photo from that time of the complete vessel. photo © JST, Fujichrome 72-11-6 - ViewScan

Well, this is certainly one well photographed little ferry, which I suppose is a testament to how many of us like her. I don't have too much to add, other than a bit of a rainbow. She looks pretty spiffy coming straight out of Fraser Shipyard- the hull looks freshly painted. If the shot looks crooked, it's because the dock I was standing on was rocking around. That's my story, anyway.

Interesting article. Thanks for posting it. I am very curious as to what BCFS is planning for its minor fleet replacements in the coming years. What does that look like? With the impending retirement of Tenaka, I'm assuming (perhaps incorrectly, I don't know) that a refit is planned for Tachek, similar to what QQ2 received, and Tachek will be the replacement vessel for Tenaka. Is that the general vibe? Would Quinitsa shift over to the Denman-Hornby route, or is that crossing too rough for that vessel to handle? Are they planning on bullding any new minor vessels? NIP is due for retirement as well, so there's another route that will need a vessel. I'm just curious at this point, as I'm sure most everyone else is.

Is there a chance that the Quinitsa could be given a mid-life upgrade to better suit her for rougher waters, or would that be a huge waste of money due to her age and the limited time she's got left?

The various reports I've seen show that BCFerries plans to use a mild-weather ferry year-round on the Hornby route. Currently this is Kahloke, and yes I read that they would plan to place Quinitsa on this rough route. - you've seen YouTube videos of the rocking Kahloke trying to dock at Denman East (Gravelly Bay), and it can get very difficult to do that. It would be logical for Tachek to soon get the same life-extension the QQII recently received, but I also saw a report in recent months that mentioned that major projects like this would be pushed-back because of lack of funding. - A refitted Tachek would be the logical replacement for Tenaka, seeing as she's been the regular replacement (with more overheight capacity) on that Cortes Island route.

The performance term #3 submission called for the Quinitsa to be replaced by the cable ferry, assuming that project gets approved. The Tachek would then replace the Tenaka, and the Kahloke becomes the permenant replacement vessel.

They've been using the Kahloke on the Hornby run in the winter the last couple of years. Quinitsa would certainly be no worse. The drawings of the new Denman/Hornby berths at the August open house on Hornby showed the fit for Quinitsa, and when the cable ferry was first suggested, the plan was for Quinitsa to move to the Hornby run. I don't know if that is still the plan.

BC Ferries has put out a service notice advising that the Tenaka is being taken out of service again, this time for nine months.
They're not saying right now what the work is for, but this marks the third extended period in as many years that this boat has been sent to the shipyard.
I'd like to see the bill for all this 'life extension' nonsense. I expect it wouldn't be far off the cost of a modest newbuild. That there is money for endless patch jobs but not for a proper long term solution is not the sign of a well planned transportation company.

I'm not sure that Tenaka is being sent to the shipyard. I think this might just be a ship-swap, in order to give Cortes Island "the better ship" in terms of vehicle mix capacity, for the balance of 2012. Here's the service notice, with no word on what the Tenaka will be up to: There has been nothing said about Tachek rebuild or Tenaka refit in the 2011/12 business-plan document or in the recent quarterly-reports. I've also not seen any requests-for-proposals for refit work nor any mention in the ferry-advisory-committee minutes. It looks like Tachek might be the new Cortes ferry, and that Tenaka might be the new roaming-replacement. Or maybe not.....

Like Neil mentioned, it would be nice if they stopped with these life extensions and the province comes up with the money for a decent replacement vessel. Perhaps the Tenaka will be the new replacement vessel for the Kahloke (if she goes for a refit this season)? I guess I won't be riding the Tenaka this summer

I too was looking forward to a trip on the Tenaka this summer.
It's been about 3 years since I've been on her. *sighs*
