With all the work being done to Tenaka in tha past few years, the money spent would have gone a long way towards a new ship.
Let's face it, Tenaka is 48 years old she can't be expected to last forever.

Hopefully, Mr Horn is right, and I was just jumping to conclusions. Spending more money on Tenaka is nuts.
Unfortunately, as of yet there is no sign of a resolution to a key part of this problem; as in an announcement of a new ferry to replace the Tenaka. Even if BC Ferries decides to go with the cable ferry to Denman, which will free up the Quinitsa to go to Hornby, they still need a vessel to fill in at Texada, Cortes, and Port MacNeill when need be, and if the Tenaka is retired, they have nothing.

Perhaps the Tenaka will go back to its old stomping grounds, and maybe even regain its original name. It could be the fill in boat for the next time the Burnaby breaks down.

From my photographs of Tenaka's Transport-Canada inspection certificate:
- I was onboard and saw the certificate in February 2010, and it was issued Feb.1, 2010 and expired 1 year later on January 31, 2011.
Presumably this was renewed for another 1-year term from February 2011 to January 2012, or so.....which brings us to about now.
So maybe the vessel-switch at Cortes is because Tenaka's certificate is about to expire?
Luke likely has a photograph of a more recent certificate.

Alas, after checking my external hard drive, I do not The last time I rode her was during July 2010, so I probably would have seen the same certificates as you, anyway.

Not necessarily. Ships have different levels of certification, and only the major certificates are displayed. There's also hull survey and machinery survey certificates which can all hold back a ship from sailing. For example, the Atlantic Vision is tied up on a work period currently, and her continuous machinery survey is out of date. Her engineers are putting in major overtime getting the machinery inspected on time for her to go back into service next month. Her certification on the TC website expires in 2015 though.

I'll toss-in an idea for speculation, re Tenaka's short-term future.
- considering that Tachek is going to be the Cortes ferry until December 2011. - considering that BCFerries has no other ship available for refit-relief for the Hornby Island route (well, Bowen Queen is available, but would be capacity-overkill).
Therefore, if Kahloke has a refit-time sometime between now and December 2011, we might see the lovely Tenaka on the Hornby Island route for some relief work.
And we might also see Tenaka doing relief work for Thetis/Penelakut Island, if MV Kuper were to go into refit.
....that's my speculative logic, that Tenaka becomes the small-ship relief vessel, for any route too small for Bowen Queen.

Why do I get this feeling that if the QoB has another unexpected breakdown, the Comox Queen could sail Route 17 once again... I'd love to see that happen but at the same time... please don't happen.

From February 2010, 2 of my favourite views of Tenaka from the Heriot Bay Inn float. - on a Saturday morning, soon after a winter 2009/10 refit.

Re the short-term plan for Tenaka:
I contacted the editor of a Cortes Island news-site, and she noted that "The Tenaka is required to provide refit relief on the Hornby run until the first week in July and then she will be laid up until December when we will bring the Tenaka back to Cortes."
Neil is smiling...

Tenaka is currently in Lambert Channel. It looks like she's testing the docks at Gravelly Bay and at Shingle Spit.

Rumour Alert: Today, @bcferries tweeted this response from someone who sent them a photo of the Tenaka at Berth 2, Saltery Bay: @m_a_novak The vessel is the Tenaka. It will soon be operating between Saltery Bay & Earl's Cove. Vessel profile: ow.ly/9rFTL ^s I have inquired if this is true. If it is, then this could be big, but I have no idea why they would have any use for Tenaka on Route 7. I have seen no service notice, nor anything posted here, so that's why I flagged this as a rumour.

BCFS responded to me this morning, saying that it was a rumour and to watch for service notices. I have no idea why they'd need a relief vessel, why they chose the Tenaka of all available ships, or when it will occur. It does not make any sense to me.

Like I told you on Skype last night, Mike Corrigan is a hockey player. In the NHL, everyone on your team is around the same size. I guess he doesn't realize that his new team (of ships) varies quite a lot. ;D

Scott has done a very thorough job of chronicling Tenaka on the Hornby route, so I'll just add another angle, taken from the rocks by the boat launch. I asked a senior crewman how long Tenaka was on the route, and he said until July 4th or 5th. I rolled my eyes and said "Good grief", to which he replied, "Our sentiments exactly."

Mr Horn gave us a portfolio of the Queen of New Westminster manoeuvring into Departure Bay, so here's Tenaka in action on Lambert Channel. That's a sweet photo with the wake showing the evidence of the turn-around. Thanks for hanging around Mt. Geoffrey to get those photos.
