I'm a bit surprised a vessel that small can even load at Horseshoe Bay... I'll bet her bow dropped when the ramp came down. It looks like they had to wedge the Nimpkish in at a bit of an angle to be able to use the berth. Horseshoe Bay Ferry Terminal by Michael, on Flickr

We met her a couple of hours later and I checked her (slightly out of date) AIS to see where she was headed that night - it still said Horseshoe Bay. Thanks for confirming that she actually did stop in there...

WOW! I had to do a double-take on the photo to 'find' the wee vessel. Looks like one could stuff a few 'Nimpkish's' aboard the 'Coquitlam'.

Once the Island Class vessels have entered service, where the Nimpkish be retired? I through that BC Ferries was going to be retired when Northern Sea Wolf entered service.

WOW! - What a story! Drinking water from melting some of that ice? --Yikes! The conditions do make one wonder if that sailing should have started in the first place but.... At least we know that the little 'Nimpkish' can take a beating and survive.

Thanks for taking the initiative, and curiosity to take the time to source and post those frankly, quite disturbing pictures. I stand corrected but I do believe the 'Nimpkish' has endured the largest 'ice-up' of any B.C. Ferry in the company's history. Having been deep-sea during Winter months, frankly that ice-up is damn terrifying! Anyone who watched the series 'Deadliest Catch' is fully aware of the ice-up concerns skippers have on their fishing vessels especially when they are miles out into the Bering Sea! As homage to the 'Nimpkish', I shall make no more tepid comments about her ability to provide customers with potable water. I shall now refer to the mighty 'Nimpkish' as the Mid-Coast 'ICE-QUEEN'.

What or which remarks were snide? There are photos all over the internet for lots of things. This Nimpkish ice event got lots of news coverage and lots of coverage in various Facebook groups. Back 10 years ago, this forum was one of the only places for ferry news and photos. Now, we're just one of many, and more like a long-form magazine, instead of a tabloid (like a Facebook group might be). So there's no need to copy everything we see onto this forum. Besides, the news story (with links to photos) was posted at least twice to this forum. Once in this thread, and once by Timmy C. to the news release thread. So we had the event noted here on this forum.

2. mods: sorry. is that a rule? no photos unless they are taken by yourself? Hotlinking is not allowed, which is inserting photos that aren't your own, and without permission, directly to your post. You did provide a link to the website that hosted the photos, which IS the correct way to do it. We went ahead an edited your posts to delete the attached (hotlinked) photos, but kept the website links to the photos that you included. Providing the link, as you did, is all that is necessary. Thanks!

I am somewhat surprised to see the Nimpkish listed. I thought they were planning to keep her around a little longer? My plan was to get one last ride on the NIP but with the restrictions in place and wanting to keep myself and others safe during this time I don't think that will happen.

Then get all of the rides on her as you like. Us ferry geeks could help you out. (well, sort of)

I'm a bit surprised, along with others, that the Nimpkish is being sold. The central coast route is such a traffic void in winter that I thought they would want to lay up Northern Sea Wolf and use the cheapest possible option. In the past, when Nimpkish wasn't available, BC Ferries went to a tug and barge. As of next winter, I guess Quadra Queen II might get to explore the central coast, if the NSW needs some time off.
Maybe the lack of customers is counter balanced by the cost of having Nimpkish as a marginal, seldom used vessel in the fleet. As well, we saw this past winter, for at least the second time, how inadequate a teeny vessel like Nimpkish is when faced by freezing, storming weather that turns her and everything on her open deck into a salty ice cube.
In any event, it will leave the Nicola (Spirit of Lax Kw'alaams), originally Quadra Queen, as the last of the four ferries of this design left in service. Interestingly, Nimpkish was the youngest sister, built thirteen years after the first. Apparently it was a design that worked.

Did she not have quite a bit of work done on her for the Central Coast service? What shape is she in say compared to what Tenaka was or Nicola? If shes in decent shape she may sell fast who knows??

I could see the Quadra Queen II being a suitable replacement for the Nimpkish on the Central Coast run. Larger, much more comfortable passenger space, more over hight vehicle capacity to.

Pre-Nimpkish deployment, I always felt the Tenaka was the better candidate for the North Coast service with nominally larger vehicle capacity, capability for basic food services (as opposed to a countertop and mini-fridge with the Nimpkish), and larger passenger space with a more panoramic view on Deck 4. Sections of one of the saddle lounges were already converted for crew use, and could be converted to a handful of cabins for crew and passengers.
This is a very minor thing, but one thing about the Nimpkish is that if you wish to stay inside, you must choose which side of the ship you’d like to look out of. Speaking from experience, it’s hard to choose!
