Pre-Nimpkish deployment, I always felt the Tenaka was the better candidate for the North Coast service with nominally larger vehicle capacity, capability for basic food services (as opposed to a countertop and mini-fridge with the Nimpkish), and larger passenger space with a more panoramic view on Deck 4. Sections of one of the saddle lounges were already converted for crew use, and could be converted to a handful of cabins for crew and passengers. This is a very minor thing, but one thing about the Nimpkish is that if you wish to stay inside, you must choose which side of the ship you’d like to look out of. Speaking from experience, it’s hard to choose! ...and of course, as built, Comox Queen had food service for what the schedule said was her one hour, forty minute crossing from Little River. What is likely to be a long term, virus caused contraction of our economy makes me even less optimistic that LRMS will ever put her into service out of Port Alberni.

Today's service notice indicates that Nimpkish is still in the fleet, and will still be sailing this spring and likely summer (summer is my own speculation). HERE

With the Northern Sea Wolf now back in service, is Nimpkish finally being retired?

Thanks for that update, 'george. Could it be that three ferries in a row, Howe Sound Queen, North Island Princess, and the Nimpkish, have sold to local interests, for actual use on our coast? That would represent a remarkable departure from what often happens with old BCF, WSF, or AMHS vessels.

Would be quite the sight to see her doing the sixteen knots that the TC register says she's now capable of.

I was fortunate enough to be able to travel on the Nimpkish in June 2020 from Bella Coola to Bella Bella. We would have made it there much sooner than the 10 hours it took to get there had we been able to go 16 knots

The owner representative is listed as being on Minstrel Island. Interesting, as it is in the middle of nowhere!

Really wasn't all that much fanfare for her departure on the forum, eh? Anyways, I wonder what she's up to now. It's been quite a few months.

BC Ferries' Nimpkish - circa 1990 - Heriot Bay, Quadra Island. That big rock on the right gives away the location of this photo but beyond that I have no info. The date is very 'approximate'. photographer unknown [Capt Bob Gentles collection]
