My final set of Kwuna photos from her southbound tow to Allied Shipyard in North Vancouver. - September 18, 2013 These are taken from Oyster Bay Regional Park, south of Campbell River. This is opposite the rocky wasteland of Mitlenatch Island, which you can see in the background. The tug doing this tow is Storm Bandit.

Nice, you got to photograph the side of Kwuna that I wasn't able to.

Kwuna in the Campbell River area, on September 18, 2013. - on her southbound tow for her North Vancouver (Allied shipyard) refit. The tug is Storm Bandit. From Oyster Bay park, with Mitlenatch Island in the background. This photograph is the front-page photo of this week's edition of the "Haida Gwaii Observer" newspaper. - I had sent some of my Kwuna photos to the editor, and I'm happy that they published one. (their website is down right now, but a friend sent me a PDF of the paper version front page)

I was cruising through North Van early Sunday morning, so I took a slight diversion to see the Kwuna. September 29, 2013The following image posted by this account is copyright © S.A. ~ Unauthorized use is prohibited. BC Ferries - Kwuna at Allied Shipyards. by BCFS, on Flickr

Behold, the new and improved Kwuna! She's nearing the end of her 3/4 life refit at Allied Shipyard, and is looking pretty good. She now has some superstructure modifications to extend the lounge and the crew areas, as well as a wheelhouse extension similar to the Kahloke. I spoke with a Deckhand today who is helping with getting the ship back online. They hope to take her out for Sea trials mid week next week. He also mentioned that the upper decks will also be opened up to the public similar to how they were opened up on the Klitsa and Kahloke. I apologize for the slight lack of quality, since I wasn't prepared to take photos today. I happened to be in the area to drop off some household recycling, and didn't think to stop by and have a look at the progress until I was actually there, and all I had was my iphone. Mr. Cassidy was there earlier today as well, so I'd imagine he'll post some better photos later. MV Kwuna by Deck-dog SSI, on Flickr MV Kwuna by Deck-dog SSI, on Flickr

As you probably know, the Kwuna recently returned from a major refit, and included upgrades similar to those of her other K-class cousins. One thing that now makes her stand out from almost all other ferries is a unique mural that was placed inside her small lounge: Deck 2 Lounge - MV Kwuna by MileagePhoto, on Flickr I think this feature adds a nice touch and a bit of character to an otherwise small utilitarian vessel. It would be nice to see this added to other ferries that are route-exclusive.

Here is the lounge 'before' photo, from April 2007... BCFS should get a 'pat on the back' for sprucing up the decor in this lounge. For people who live there and depend on this ferry though, this is not much of a consolation prize. They will loose one third of their sailings come April 1st. No sailings before 8 AM or after 6:30 PM. This makes it impossible for a shift worker to commute across Skedegate Channel. The cuts on this run are one of the most draconian in the system. There is no pat on the back for BC's 'Liberal' government on this file.

No sailings before 8 AM or after 6:30 PM. This makes it impossible for a shift worker to commute across Skedegate Channel. ...and so the onboard Kwuna photo taken by our members' recent visit to Haida Gwaii will soon be impossible to duplicate. No more late-night sailings. The soon disappearing photo-op is indicative of the soon arriving major inconvenience to that area's residents.

Great shots, guys. Looks like Allied did a pretty good job at renovating the Ramped-K, the best one out of the three.

Here's my Walkthrough of the Kwuna. Unlike the last walkthrough, you get to see a lot more of the vessel this time.

My photo of the Kwuna (above) has been chosen for Flickr's 'Explore' feature. As a result it has had more than 2790 'views', and 64 'favourites' (so far). I have no idea what criteria Flickr uses in choosing photos for 'Explore', but I am now up to about half a dozen photos so chosen, and there have also been a few of Mr. DOT's chosen.

Jim: do you get a sense, or have you talked to the Kwuna crew, regarding how often they have loading issues with the ship's ramps and the shore ramps? This seems, on the surface, to be such an inexpensive form of docking, but I wonder how widely applicable it might actually be.

This seems, on the surface, to be such an inexpensive form of docking, but I wonder how widely applicable it might actually be. No, I did not talk to them about this, but I would be fairly certain that loading/ unloading issues such as I saw with this truck & trailer combo are frequent occurrences, especially in summer. The number of big RV rigs that I saw on the Northern Adventure (both going & coming) was surprisingly high (four to six each way), considering what it costs to take such vehicles over & back. A goodly portion of those travellers would go over to Moresby Island via the Kwuna, I assume. Then there are the routine trucks & other long vehicles that will sometimes have loading 'issues'. I don't think this ferry could handle loaded logging trucks without major modification to the docking arrangements. BTW, I checked the time stamps on the photos that I took of the unloading of that ferry at Alliford Bay in the early afternoon of June 24th. More than ten minutes were taken up getting this rig off the boat. About five minutes were needed to get it onto the boat.
