MV Kuper arrived at Nanaimo Shipyard at 10:00am today. My vantage point was across the harbour, at the Port's visiting-vessel pier. ps: Nanaimo Shipyard was recently in the news because the Tamil migrant ship "MV Sun Sea" will be docked at the shipyard's wharf for the next few months. Here is MV Kuper is heading up Newcastle Channel to the shipyard. Departure Bay ferry terminal is around the corner & behind her - the bow of the MV Sun Sea is visible on the left-side of the photo. - with a harbour ferry pickle-boat in the foreground. Kuper meets the Sun Sea. The Sun Sea is sticking-out from behind both ends of the Kuper. - Kuper finds her place at the end of the shipyard wharf. She'll likely be pulled-up on the ways after the holiday weekend is over.

Why are there North and East Cardinal buoys in the picture? What obstruction is present under the bottom of the frame?

Why are there North and East Cardinal buoys in the picture? What obstruction is present under the bottom of the frame? I'm standing on a pier, and there is a floating pier in front of me where the cardinal buoys are placed. This marks the shipping-lane for the arriving & departing sea-planes. ....and the harbour has lots of shoals.

Kwuna (Kuper ) at the shipyard wharf, today: The lovely ship "Swell" is held here, and is for sale after a bankruptcy. The ship and some floating fishing-lodge bunkhouses are kept at the shipyard. You can buy them if you want, from a bankruptcy trustee.

MV Kuper is up on the ways at Nanaimo Shipyard. I stopped for pictures on Oct.14, 2010. The workers were busy scraping the exterior of the hull. ------------------------------ View from the hotel parking lot, next door. From the viewing-platform beside Stewart Avenue: Close-up of the RAD, with a yard-worker for scale. - look at all that marine-life ! Kuper through the weeds:

Interesting photos, Flug! Thanks. I didn't notice all the marine-life on the RAD until I started cropping & lightening at home.

re Kuper pictures:
- I've moved some 2006 archived posts to this thread, and they now appear at the START of this thread.
by the way, they are of the Kuper's early days in the BC shipyard, including the side-launch.

That signboard trumpeting the features of the Kuper's lounge was kind of funny. Imagine, a lounge to keep you dry on rainy days. Big enough for all the passengers. And new seats, nice and plasticky and hard... big enough to put backpacks on. What a concept. And insulation, to keep it warm. What will they think of next? Talk about pampering the rabble on those minor routes.

Here are some photos from today of the Kuper and Kahloke at Allied Shipyards in North Vancouver. Looks like the Kahloke is getting some major work done.
They really don't have much manoevering room when docking at these shipyards, as you can see by the sand shoals at this lower tide.

Awesome work. I enjoyed viewing the Chemainus / Thetis-Penelakut route. We're you filming it from the bridge?

Was BC Ferries thinking about putting the Kuper on the Denman Island - Hornby Island (Gravelly Bay-Shingle Spit) route to replace her with Kahloke on the Kuper on the Chemainus - Thetis Island - Penelakut Island route? I think the Hornby Island route could use her with Kuper because she is a little bigger than Kahloke.
