Quinitsa is back on the Denman run for a few weeks, while the cable thingy gets some scheduled maintenance. I'd forgotten about that, so I was pleased to see her over on the Buckley Bay side today as I waited at Denman. She was looking awful when she was on the Hornby run some time back, but smells and looks all spiffy now with a fresh coat of paint, and if memory serves, a bit of renewal of wasted steel in places. Although, it's clear that some of the paint just covers decades of corrosion, and won't last long. I don't know that BC Ferries has a long term commitment to this vessel.
It was such a nice change to be on a real ferry, after months of riding something that kind of has the charm of a horizontal elevator. Seemed like a novelty to hear the engines power up, and see the boat swing around coming out of the dock, rather than the dead straight path of a vessel that can't navigate. Everybody's gotten used to the cable ferry, and for the most part it's been dependable- so far, although it has yet to be tested by a really howling gale. But it was nice to have an actual, full fledged 'boat' on the route, leaving an actual prop wake behind, however modest. Quinitsa was something of a disaster at Saltery Bay a few months back, but she fits on the Denman route, and I'll enjoy the few trips I'll be taking before she's gone again.

Good on BCFerries for keeping the Quinitsa in good operating shape even though (I believe) she is considered a relief vessel. Good care for your boats is always good so people can give you a + for it.

"Charm of a horizontal elevator"
Even though I never rode on the BSC from the pictures I have seen of it I think even some elevators have more charm especially in high class facilities. LOL!!!
Glad Quinitsa is back for a short time.

Quinitsa is going back into service until further notice, and you will never guess where. According to BC Ferries service notice the BSC has a issue with a hydraulic leak and Old Faithful is returning to her regular run until they get this sorted out.

Went for a drive to Campbell River today, Quinitsa tied up at Buckley Bay not in service. BSC in service.

I don't understand why BC Ferries doesn't put the Qunitisa on the Hornby Island - Denman Island route for this summer instead of consistently shuttling throughout the summer season. Does anyone know if this has been considered? I mean if BSC breaks down the Kahloke could be re assigned to Hornby Island, and return the Quinitsa to her previous route.... am I missing something? Thanks to anyone who can share some insight :-)

Thanks to anyone who can share some insight :-) The local FAC has lobbied BC Ferries for the last couple of years to put Quinitsa on the Hornby run in summer, to no avail. I'm not sure if Quinitsa carries one more crew member than the Kahloke, but if so, that would be a factor. I suppose they've also figured the fuel costs are less with the smaller boat, even with shuttling, and they're more concerned about expenses than customer service on the so-called 'minor' routes. edit- Quinitsa is crewed by six... think Kahloke has five.

Thanks Neil for this information. I took some time to go through the Qunitisa's thread and its actually interesting and great to see the pictures of her doing this route. I wish I was there, I've been away from Hornby recently.
Is the Qunitisa under-powered for this route (when you mentioned it was struggling in the Lambert Channel)? Or is is purely the shape of her hull? Does the crew from the Kahloke take over this vessel or do they send the Quinitisa's crew to the other side of Denman Island?
Thanks,

Isn't the plan to have Quinitsa replace Howe Sound Queen on Route 6? I believe I read that somewhere here on the Forum. Of course, that could be a few years out yet - don't know the timing for HSQ's retirement and subsequent replacement. It doesn't make sense to me to replace a larger vessel with a smaller one on a route that probably isn't losing numbers, more likely the opposite - but, that all seems to be part of the "new math" at BC Ferries these days. Less is more, right?

Less is more, right? 2019 was the proposed replacement date. While Quinitsa may be free now, they need to wait for the Minor 44 class vessels to arrive and free up Quadra Queen II to become the new spare vessel. Although one has to wonder why wait so long... in a month once Salish Eagle is in service, Bowen Queen will become a full-time spare vessel, and it's more capable of being the refit replacement vessel on the minor routes than Quinitsa is.

The whistle of the Little Q sounding off on departure from Saltery Bay last July. Or perhaps this is the horn that ends the period at the hockey game... Whatever the case, it's rare that we hear the Quinitsa sound a long blast like this one.

What are the chances BCFS runs Quinitsa from Gravelly Bay to Shingle Spit this beautiful long weekend? I hope so! I believe this is Hornby Island's (and perhaps the company as a whole's) busiest weekend?

according to vesselfinder.com the Quinitsa is on the move destination unknown
EDIT***********************************************************************************************
she sailed to Buckley Bay and is now headed back to Denman, however I've noticed on BCFs vessel position page that the Bayne Sound Connector hasn't moved one bit!!! could something have happened to the Cable Ferry?
2ND EDIT*******************************************************************************************************************
turns out I missed a service notice and the Bayne Sound Connector has a broken hydraulic line...
on another note, the Quinitsa has to cancel a handful of sailings in the morning for the crew to have enough down time before coming back to work in the morning

Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong, but I think Quinitsa's upcoming two day stint at Thetis & Penelakut might be the first time she's ever been found on that route. I think it also represents the biggest ferry to ever serve those islands. I know in the past, Kahloke has been shifted south.

Well, you're probably right... she must have been there for that, at least. But I'm not aware of her actually doing the route.

The Quinitsa is on the move, she left Buckley Bay, stopped off at Thetis, Penelakut and Chemainus (twice) and is now headed south between Vancouver Island and Salt Spring (she didn’t stop at Vesuvius or Crofton)

I'll be checking late Saturday night or on Sunday morning, with considerable interest, to see if Quinitsa does indeed end up on route 20 for a couple of days.
The service notice for her replacing Kuper has disappeared, and a couple of critical observers on Hornby have opined that she failed dock tests... further proof, they say, of the cable ferry folly, and the notion that Quinitsa could become a mini- Bowen Queen vagabond.
I asked BC Ferries, and a customer service rep just quoted me the now deleted service notice.
My guess is that Quinitsa will indeed be in service out of Chemainus on Sunday. If not, and if dock compatibility is the issue, then BC Ferries would have to move Kahloke down to Chemainus, as they've done in the past, and have Quinitsa serving Hornby when the Kuper is out.

Well, Quinitsa is still sitting at Fulford, and Kuper is sailing her usual route. Maybe the suspicions about a failed dock fit were correct, and Quinitsa can't be the relief vessel she was supposed to become when the cable ferry took over at Denman.
Or maybe BC Ferries has just re-scheduled things.
