MV Tachek at Gravelly Bay, late 90's (I'm dodgy on the dates for these; being a young idiot, I didn't date them). Fenk, slightly older idiot

Great Photos, Jim. Especially the one of the Texada Queen...That photo was taken 25 Years ago 9 Days Ago. Who'd of thought that she would be back in the same place 25 Years after that photo was taken.

Scott takes some mighty fine photographs, and here are my 2 favourites from this set. (I've cropped them to show them here; no creative offense intended... ;D). I like this one, with the Powell River mill in the background.

Here's a video of a stormy Tachek sailing from Shingle Spit to Denman-West (you read that right, Neil).
Here's the description from the video:

I feel sorry for whoever owns that minivan on the Tachek becuase they're going to learn a little lesson on salt+metal. ;D The time lapse video was pretty neat. I haven't seen too many that show that long of a time. Also, the ferries look like they are eating the cars.

I was so envious of the people who got to do that rare excursion for the day it happened- I'm even more so now. 25 years I've been going there; doubt I'll ever be lucky enough to go the long way. It was a pretty good indication of why the Kahloke isn't trusted to sail in Lambert Channel for a good part of the year.

It wasn't as rough as that when I rode aboard her to Texada in a storm... even so, it was steady as a rock up on the bridge. The Tachek is a tough little ship. Sometimes, though, that short run from Denman to Hornby seems a little superfluous... maybe they should go the long way around more often just to justify having the Tachek there...

Lambert Channel is wide open to storms from the south west or north east. I saw a fair bit of damage on the south west side of Hornby from the blow we had Monday before last. Believe me, with the openness of the water, and the increasing number of wind storms climate change is bringing us, even the ten minute crossing justifies having a more seaworthy ferry.

Why would they even park a vehicle right at the bow when it is stormy like that. For safety they should of parked it away from the bow in case the spray hits as I think someone could get after them by saying there vehicle got damaged from salt water cause they parked them right at the bow, If the boat was full I mean that is a different story but if there is only a few vehicles why not park them under the sheltered area.

Hopefully they were smart enough to go directly to a car wash after that. Good idea to do that after parking at the beach all day. That salt spray can travel a fair distance.
Along the Oregon coast, pretty sure it is Depoe Bay, the road is right above rocks along the water. You can park there and the high tide surf hits the rocks sending spouts of water high into the air. The usual onshore winds carry it out over the cars. You often see tourists get out of their car or walk along the sidewalk and get showered.

Looks like it did spend the night in Tsawwassen after all. Tachek is currently heading NW past Nanaimo right now. Here are some pictures, from 11:30am, in North Nanaimo (right on the edge of the border with Lantzville, to be precise ;D). ========== Non-zoom, to set the scene: - she's smaller than a cruise-ship, so harder to see! Time for some digital zoom, too bad about the haze: Zoom out again, see her traveling up Georgia Strait: Time to try another close-up, as she gets closer to me: Another perspective-shot, as she works her way up the strait: Time to try close-up again, and there's a pleasure-boat in the background: Here she is, about even with my position: Passing me by (Southern end of Texada Island in background, for this picture of ex Texada Queen): Tachek in behind 2 of the Winchelsea Islands. In background are Lasquiti and Texada Islands. Bug in the foreground.

Here are a couple of shots that I got of the Tachek subbing for the Quadra Queen II on the Port McNeill - Alert Bay run. These were taken on Wednesday, April 28th, from the foot of Hyde Road, a few km south of Port McNeill. JST photos ©

The MV Tachek has been the relief ship on the Port McNeil / Alert Bay / Sointula run, while the QQII is in extended refit. Here are some shots from July 4, 2010 of Tachek's trip from Alert Bay to Port McNeil: With Sointula in the background across the water. She's passing right in front of me.
