Here is what BC Ferries is doing to the Tachek during her Mid-life refit similar to the Quadra Queen II mid-life refit.

Here is what BC Ferries is doing to the Tachek during her Mid-life refit similar to the Quadra Queen II mid-life refit. Thanks for that great find. I am curious if Tachek's main deck of her superstructure will get extended aft, so that she's the same as the Quadra Queen II. Currently, that feature is the main difference between the 2 sister ships.

I was looking at stuff about her last night because I had nothing else to do. I do not know probably not because it would have already been done.

Had a look at the Tachek on my morning commute. There are tarps encompassing the entire interior of the wheelhouse, as well fully extending to the edges of the vessel. It appears that upgrades to the wheelhouse are priority numero uno - not a replacement like what we saw with the QQII.
Initial work has begun on the passenger decks, and prep work is taking place on the vehicle deck.

Is the interior going to be the same as the Quadra Queen II?

It's probably all wrapped up so they can remove all the asbestos before they cut the bridge off

Because this kind of work does not require a dry dock. BC Ferries own facility is more than capable of doing this, and it also saves the company money, too. Further into her upgrade, she'll be towed to dry dock (Point Hope, most likely) for the rest of her overhaul to be completed before entering service in October.

Those dates are completely arbitrary, subject to change, and very rarely accurate. We have seen MLU completion up to eight months late.

Actually, this is not an MLU (mid life upgrade). It is in fact an old boat life extension project (OBLEP). When done hopefully sometime next fall, she will re-enter service.

News from BCFerries doesn't get much more official than a report to the Ferry Commissioner. Here is the February 1, 2013 report on the Tachek project: ============================ *** The headline-news version for those who just want to know about these 2 items: ========================== report preamble The full report is linked here (it's just a 6-page presentation-style bullet-point briefing): www.bcferrycommission.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/02/Tachek-LE-Update-12OCT.pdfHere's a cut/paste of the full report, for your viewing pleasure:

Thanks for posting that, Mr. Horn.
I'm curious... does anybody know what the QQII currently has for engines? She was originally built with 2x 600 HP Ruston-Hornsby, and I'm wondering if they've ever been replaced. That would explain the anticipated 500k cost of overhaul, as parts would be difficult to come by. I'd be curious to know what they replace them with.

Was the Tachek not the main vessel for replacing some of the minor vessels in the off season? How is BC Ferries going to manage when a vessel like her or the QQII needs to go in for repair? (That is if the Tenaka is retired in 2015. Anybody else doubtful a new ship will be built by then?)

It sounds like BC Ferries intends on displacing the Tenaka with the Cable Ferry, basically sending the Quinitsa to 22 and the Kahloke becomes the spare. Trouble is, the Kahloke cannot do the routes that the Tachek primarily provides relief service on. So we shall see... I'm predicting another case of BCFS Lack of Foresight Syndrome.

News from BCFerries doesn't get much more official than a report to the Ferry Commissioner. Because of the recent changes to the Coastal Ferry Act, this type of "Report to the Commissioner" for major capital expenditures will be more commonplace, from now on. And because I'm obsessive-compulsive about checking the Ferry Commissioner's website each week, you'll always get this fine type of forum reporting. (self parody intended)

QQII Tachek seen at Campbell River, sometime before 1985. Peacock Postcards. Mr. Barnard is the photographer. Mr. Cheese posed a question which made me question my assumption that this here postcard is of the QQII ship. I'm now gonna call her the Tachek. Reasons: - the aft mast - the short superstructure - Mr. Barnard's poor track-record of identifying ships.

It could be one of the sisters because the ferries worked together in '80's on the Campbell River to Quadra Island route.

I gather that the QQ II & Tachek were identical to begin with but at some point the QQ II had its passenger cabin expanded?
I am looking for info that would confirm or refute this.

Unless mislabeled, this photo indicates that her original configuration was identical to the Tachek, as you mentioned: m3.i.pbase.com/u47/kstapleton/small/30243593.QuadraQueenII.jpg

As built, the Tachek and Quadra Queen II were identical. I suppose it was late 90's, early 2000's when the QQII's houseworks were expanded. Now I don't know for sure since I've only been on the Tachek, but I believe the houseworks were expanded to allow for the crew mess to be above the car deck. With that, I'd imagine all of their fire fighting equipment and rescue boat gear followed along as well.
From the sounds of it, the Tachek will recieve this extension to the houseworks as well.

I think BC Ferries should keep the Tenaka a round for a spare minor vessel or the Nimpkish as a spare minor vessel.

From the sounds of it, the Tachek will recieve this extension to the houseworks as well. Why would BC Ferries decided to expand her passenger cabin now? Why Not? They've put so much money into giving her an Asset Betterment, they might as well do it. Talking to crew on Texada, one of the things they disliked about the Tachek is her Mess Room. Being below the Car Deck I can see why. I'm sure the Deck Department would prefer to have it closer to the Bridge. I wouldn't doubt that's why they did it to the Quadra Queen II when she had that major upgrade back in the 90s. (I'm guessing the First Nations art on her front came in at that time too)
