what is up with the Bowen today?? Was not she suppose to be filling in for the Cumberland starting today?? She is at Swartz Bay now but I thought today was the start date. I see the Skeena and Cumberland were both back and forth between Fulford and the outer islands.

She left Saltery this morning. It would have been cool to ride the Cumberland to Fulford, but the earliest sailing one could take from Vancouver would arrive in Fulford in the darkness.

The Bowen Queen has been docked in Berth 1 at Saltery Bay since early yesterday morning. Thinking she would just be stopping briefly, I took a drive out to Saltery Bay yesterday to get some shots. To my surprise though, she hasn't departed for Tsawwassen yet. (Well, she doesn't need to be there till next week) This layover is fine with me though, I might be able to get some more pictures. A very full Bowen Queen sailing off to Gulf Islands, while the SOBC is on her way to Tsawwassen.

Coming back to town next Saturday for a month'e escape from the busiest part of Hornby's summer resort madness, and Coastal Skier's photo above reminded me of how much I'm looking forward to my annual excursion across the strait on the Bowen Queen. This year the atmosphere will be a bit diminished by the fact that the last old wooden berth at Tsawwassen has been demolished and replaced by the standard modern job, but, hey, progress goes on. The Bowen herself will still be as funky, and there's still the novelty of that ten week period each summer where a smallish, 51 year old open deck ferry plies the strait to the Gulf Islands. Four decks to explore, and hopefully, the live as opposed to canned announcements welcoming passengers aboard, making it seem as if the crew appreciates the quirkiness of the route. The Polish vessels will be here all too soon, with their parking dungeons, single passenger decks, and cramped lounges. I'll enjoy the Bowen Queen this summer, just as I've enjoyed her since she seemed such a wonder at Bowen Island in 1965.

A first for me, today; I was the only passenger on a ferry underway. Well, for maybe fifteen minutes. The Bowen Queen had to depart Otter Bay to let the 'Cumberland come in, before we returned to pick up Tsawwassen bound passengers. I was staying on with a return ticket.
Not so on the final leg from Galiano to Tsawwassen, where the deck crew earned a round of applause for threading the third of three Variety Club vans onto a packed deck.
The Bowen is a well weathered old girl, and there are lots of places on deck where you can see fifty one years of wasted steel and many layers of paint.

Yes, I enjoyed our trip from Long Harbour to Tsawwassen 3 years ago on the Bowen Queen. Seemed strange to be out in open water on such a slow, small ferry. Gave the trip a different perspective.

Slow? Them's fightin' words, bub. She's fourteen knots, turns on a dime, and has the same number of passenger decks as those German behemoths. And unlike those cartoon festooned things, you can tell where her bridge is without having to figure it out.

I am currently up in Campbell River and hope to have a ride on the PRQ before I go home. I am planning on staying in the area until September if all goes well, is the Bowen Queen going to replace the Powell River Queen this September for refit duties? It would be nice to get a ride on both vessles.

Mormons go out on Fridays, JWs on whatever day they get their suits back from the drycleaners, but I figured Saturday would be a good day for some ferry cult missionary work, being rather hot in the eastern suburbs, so I coaxed my eldest daughter and my ex to join me on my third and final Bowen Queen excursion of the summer. They weren't thrilled with the park-n-go bus routine, but the Tsawwassen terminal lots were supposedly full, although we saw as we passed that that wasn't quite the case. No time for lunch at the market, but a sumptuous repast was found at the Bowen's dining room for the three of us- tuna sandwich, Asian chicken wrap, and a sort of sushi thing. The hot dogs weren't quite ready, but they smelled amazing. Well, maybe not.
The cashier didn't bat an eye at the weirdo who was buying his third return trip of the summer. I actually wonder why BC Ferries doesn't market these reasonably priced four hour return cruises, both from Tsawwassen and Swartz Bay.
My ex had done the Bowen with me last summer, but I don't believe my daughter has ever been on board. She said the ferry looked like a doll house... I told her some Bowenians refer to it as the wedding cake boat, and she thought that was apt as well. I was pleased at my parenting skills when she agreed that the Bowen was cool because it has so many places you can go. Actually, she never says 'cool', but she shared the sentiment. And her drumstick had caramel in the center, which increased her appreciation for the ship's dining room.
The cherry on the sundae was seeing two small groups of orcas as we neared Otter Bay, and again after leaving, and then two more separate groups, one port and one starboard, as we crossed the strait.
I did my bit for the faith. I'll sleep easy tonight, knowing that I may have increased the potential flock... but I couldn't have done it without the Bowen Queen on her summer mission.

Well done, Brother Neil. I'm surprised that you weren't rewarded by a miraculous placement of cheesecake with raspberry sauce, in the BQ's cafe.

Now that would truly have been a sign of the impending rapture, and I'd have to rethink an awful lot of worldly skepticism.

She was looking awfully worn and rusty this past summer.

Does anyone know how the Bowen Queen handled the traffic on the Earls Cove-Saltery Bay route the first few days of the long weekend?

I haven't heard/seen any complaints locally, must have been no/minimal issues.

Im sure the Bowen Queen didn't have much for issues as she was a much better replacement than in the past. That's the thing about the Bowen she can sub any run except the majors and have little if any issues. And The Island Sky is def a decent replacement on Comox to Powell River.
