Any idea when the PRQ will be retired?? Was hoping for one last trip but that might not happen depending when she’s retired.

The day following my last ride on the Bowen Queen, I proceeded up to Campbell River for a ride on the Powell River Queen. I had no clue if the PRQ had a few weeks or a few months of service left, but now we know it was still a year out.

She's for sale on Iron Planet for $21,000! Is she retired? I can't remember the other instances, but I don't think this would be the first time BC Ferries put a vessel up for sale that was still in service. Maybe the Nimpkish was one?

A couple weeks ago, myself and Cascadian Transport made the trek north of the border to do a farewell trip on both of the remaining boats in the Powell River Class. The trip ended up being a full and fun three days of ferry travel. We did two round trips on the PRQ - the following pictures are from my second and final round trip on the boat. (As a warning this is a photo-heavy post!) Here's the vessel departing Campbell River. We were on the return sailing directly before this, but decided to skip a round trip to get some pics from the shore She has some rust spots here and there, but looks pretty good compared to the condition that some WSF boats have retired in A little while later, here she is approaching Campbell River on her 8:00 sailing. Due to heavy traffic on both sides, the boat was running about 40 minutes late prior to this. To get back on schedule, the boat held at Quathiaski Cove until the 8PM sailing, effectively canceling the 7PM. I don't recall observing this on Washington boats very often, but perhaps the practice is more common on these short, single-vessel runs? The way that the RAD system on these boats allows them maneuver never fails to amaze me One barely has time to walk to the forward end before rounding the point into Quathiaski Cove. Every time I travel on this boat I can't help but wish it worked a slightly longer route! Speaking of the short crossing time, I've always wondered why BC Ferries chose to install the "good seats" on this boat, given that it has remained on this 10 minute crossing ever since its refit. At any rate, it makes the cabin a much nicer place to spend time. The Campbell River end gets some tables and extra seats, as there's no staircases on this end Up on the sundeck as we make our way back to Vancouver Island, with a surprise Matanuska sighting in the distance Quick look at her unique cardeck superstructure as we dock at Campbell River. It's funny how fast traffic tapers off - the sailing before this was full A closeup view of the heightened/lengthened side tunnel that forever set this boat apart from the rest of the class Back at Campbell River, taking on cars for another countless crossing to Quadra Island I'll miss this boat. Though the design is not as aesthetically pleasing, it's definitely my favorite of the class. The modified design, rattles, sound, and distinct "vintage ship" smell gives it a strong sense of character. I'm thankful that it stuck around for an extra summer, allowing me to take one more ride on this unique ship!

With Powell River Queen retired coming in the next couple weeks, I am haven’t been on her that much. I have say I kinda wish they removed saddles from Bowen Queen and Mayne Queen because Powell River Queen lounge is way more comfortable for passengers since it bigger. I am posting photo May 23, 2019 because I don’t have that many photos of here. Powell River Queen by Blue Bus Fan, on Flickr

I think if you take the upper lounge and the saddle lounges together on the Mayne And Bowen, you'd have very similar square footage to the space on the Powell River Queen.

I still think it would have been beneficial to whole class because it would increase over height capacity on them.

Good News Update From BC Ferries: In January, we will be implementing two-ship service with two of our new Island Class vessels on the Campbell River – Quadra Island route, similar to the two-ship service we started on the Nanaimo Harbour – Gabriola Island route in the spring,” Deborah Marshall, BC Ferries Executive Director of Public Affairs, said. The two new ships were originally scheduled to begin service in the spring but it was announced in April that because the ferry corporation was having troubling sourcing licenced officers for the boats, the vessels would begin service in the fall. “Like so many industries and other ferry service providers around the world, we find ourselves in a challenging time coming out of the pandemic,” Marshall said in April. “Contributing factors to the shortages include higher than expected retirements in key shipboard positions, the impact of vaccination policies and difficulties recruiting international candidates due to COVID-19, as well as the 25-year global shortage of professional mariners. But the corporation has found enough crew members to staff the new vessels, allowing the corporation to put the new vessels into service in January. “It did take us additional time to secure the crew required to operate the two ships,” Marshall said. “Now we are in the process of training and backfilling employees who are relocating from other routes around the fleet.” The two-ship service will allow for the replacement of the Powell River Queen, which currently provides service on the route and which is up for sale. “It has served our customers very well for many years,” Marshall said. “The vessel is currently for sale, as it will be surplus to our needs.” www.campbellrivermirror.com/news/new-two-ferry-service-to-quadra-island-begins-in-january/

I considered putting this in "Scenes From a Ferry" but thought I'd give the PRQ a bump instead.

MV Powell River Queen on its last day of service on January. 17, from 3:30 p.m. to 5:50 p.m. on board and at the Quathiaski Cove terminal on Quadra Island, where employees, past and present, and the community are invited to say their goodbyes. The vessel’s final sailings include a departure from Quathiaski Cove at 5:50 p.m. and Campbell River at 6:15 p.m. before the Island Nagalis completes the remaining sailings for the evening, according to BC Ferries in a notice. The Queen of New Westminster is about a year older than the PR/Bowen/Mayne trio. Is there anything else still operating for BCF that is older?

Powell River Queen has a mechanical failure cancelling 4:00 to 6:15:
Did this cancel the retirement event for the Powell River Queen?
It looks like the Island K'ulut'a has already replaced the Powell River Queen

The Powell River Queen is just outside of Departure Bay and looks to be on its way in.
Edit: Definitely heading to the maintenance berth at Departure Bay, almost here! They're sideslipping the PRQ in a pretty cool way as they approach.
