Queen of Cumberland was using both platform decks on her first inbound trip of the day on July 8, 2015. Here she is, arriving at Swartz Bay's berth-4: Queen of Cumberland's platform decks by Mike Bonkowski, on Flickr They lower, empty and raise one platform, before doing the same with the other. That's why it takes so long. Queen of Cumberland's platform decks by Mike Bonkowski, on Flickr Starboard platform emptied and raised, and port platform is being lowered. 4 ferries in this photo from 6:15pm on July 14, 2015. - from Bayne's Peak viewpoint on Mt. Maxwell on Salt Spring Island. Ferries from left to right are: - Spirit of Vancouver Island headed to Swartz Bay on her 5:00pm sailing - Queen of Cumberland headed from Mayne Island to Swartz Bay - Queen of New Westminster headed for Tsawwassen - Seaspan's Carrier Princess headed for Swartz Bay There is also a car-carrier freighter in the top right-centre area of the photo, in Haro Strait. Q'Cumberland is the ferry closed to the centre of the photo, so I've put the photo into the Q'Cumber thread. DSCF1104 by Mike Bonkowski, on Flickr

Little ferry in Georgia Strait That small ship can see some nasty weather on the far end of her route, some days. If the ship were a person applying for the job, the job-posting would say " Sheltered work environment, except for a few challenging moments each day."

Not sure if anyone has a photo of the Cumberland off of Gowlland Point on South Pender, but here you go. Sometimes they will choose this route on a Swartz Bay to Lyall Harbour run. I once choose this sailing so that I would pass by my place on South Pender but the Captain went the more typical route down Swanson Channel...which bummed me out. We are a bit isolated on the far end of Pender, and don't get much "ferry action" so the Cumberland's appearance was appreciated. Sadly, this was taken with my phone...as of yet I don't have fancy equipment that many have around here.

Thanks for sharing the photo and the story about it. I was wondering if a direct Saturna sailing ever traveled that way. Now I know.

I guess this is the same way the Mayne Queen sometimes sails on a direct route to Saturna?? If it's the way I am thinking I have been on the Mayne Queen when she has gone that way but never heard of the Cumberland going that way!

Yes, I have indeed seen the Mayne Queen go past our outpost on South Pender.

Confirmation of the Queen of Cumberland MLU this winter, including the addition of overhead walkway gates. On weekday mornings, Skeena Queen will deadhead to SWB very early, then return to Fulford midday to do a crew change. Then, there is a later last sailing back home. www.bcferries.com/bcferries/faces/attachments?id=929124

On Dec 14, Cumberland was towed out of Esquimalt harbour by Seaspan Foam. This got her out of harms way while the cruise ship Regal Princess was taken out of the dry dock, turned and sent out to sea. The reverse of this was done when the Ruby entered the dry dock. A few years back a vessel going to dry dock broke free from handling tugs and rammed a naval destroyer. Caution is now evident!!

The Queen of Cumberland appears to be returning to service this evening, and should sail in place of the Mayne Queen for the 7:40pm from Swartz Bay. She is still tied up in Esquimalt at the moment though.

Did the Cumberland lose her retractable car deck for a fixed ramp system like the Cap?

Did the Cumberland lose her retractable car deck for a fixed ramp system like the Cap? I'm assuming "no" because it wasn't in any of the press-releases or quarterly reporting, when the Cumberland refit was mentioned.

I assumed that too. But, have also been lead astray before by these same style releases. I feel like the platform is a better albeit slower solution for Route 5.

I assumed that too. But, have also been lead astray before by these same style releases. I feel like the platform is a better albeit slower solution for Route 5. The plan for the Cumberland all along was to keep the platform decks. While they do contribute to delays on route 5, there is enough padding in the schedule to keep the delays bearable. The additional capacity, and flexibility with respect to overheight capability, was deemed to be more beneficial. While by all accounts BCF has done a good job managing both route 4 and route 5 traffic by sharing the Bowen and Skeena Queens, the lack of the Cumberland's platforms has been sorely missed these last few months.
