Are there any pictures hanging around of the HSQ from her Napoleon L years? I haven't seen any, but there is a photo of it when it was first bought by BC Ferries in the book "Queens of British Columbia". The Wheelhouse and lounge were on a smaller lounge, and engine structure on the Port side of the ship at the time. Here's some photos of the HSQ's arrival back home. Sansum Narrows, looking South as seen from Salt Spring Island Entering Vesuvius Bay The lighting was too dark for a good shot unfortunately. But the HSQ is on the left, and the BQ is on the right. The BQ was making her last run from Crofton before taking on a Deas crane truck to adjust the dock at Vesuvius and Crofton so the docks are configured to accomodate the HSQ ========= Edit: to fix quote tag ]

Today I rode the "Hound Dawg" on a work-related trip to Salt Spring Island. - here's views of her from the Crofton jetty, as she leaves Vesuvius at 7:00am. ----------- Seen & heard on the sailing: - I asked the master if he was happy to have his ship back. He said "yes, less stairs to climb !". - A passenger asked a deckhand "Is this a new ship?". Here's something new to me: - red & yellow candy-stripe on the tripping hazards.

3 more shots of Napoleon Howe: - coming into Vesuvius on a choppy & bright afternoon. - lifesaving equipment on one corner of the car deck - The new black stuff at the end of the car deck, on the other side of the chain-gate.

:)while not a particularly attractive ferry napolion aka howe sound queen, your latest entry, is a very nice snap! a very workmanlike ferry, this eastern migrant has fared remarkably well for a good number of years, in fact a very unhearlded ferry indeed! :)mrdot.

According to BC Ferries' June 2008 figures, half of what the Quinsam burned on the same length run to Gabriola, and half what the Bowen Queen was using at the time, filling in on the ten minute run to Quadra. Even outguzzling the little Kwuna by only about 33%. Yep, no beauty, but one of the most economical vessels they've ever operated.

I'm assuming that your vantage-point was the end of the little foot pier/float that extends in front of the Crofton campground. Either that, or you put on your water-wings and swam out while holding your Nikon in the air. - Luke could do that. ;D Nice pics from that angle. My opposite-side angle from the jetty is getting boring.

I was planning on staying longer in order to get photos of her leaving, but the tide decided to go up on me. Thankfully, I only got my feet wet trying to get back to dry land.

As you can see the hound Dog got gates at the No.2 end. Gates will be installed at the No.1 end tonight, an ERA is being brought in to do a GYD installation. The gates were done last night when the vessel was tied up. No more chains.

I always like it when ERA does the GYD. Much better than when OLQ did the TSL or when LIH did the OYJ.

[tone] That should be a <beep>, and no, I was not being sarcastic about that. My name isn't exactly Mr. Horn. I would not be sarcastic about wishing to see someone else's photographic work, unless, of course, it happened to be Mr. Horn's .

I would not be sarcastic about wishing to see someone else's photographic work, unless, of course, it happened to be Mr. Horn's . I'll post my photos as links, since it's off-topic. It was at Brady's Beach at Bamfield in 2010. The big rock on the right is where a family of raccoons had gotten themselves stuck with the rising tide: a6.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc4/41340_1547903344844_1452881547_1401051_4904181_n.jpgI saw this from the beach: a8.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash2/41340_1547903384845_1452881547_1401052_688048_n.jpgSo I waded out over the water, barefoot, holding my camera up over my head so it wouldn't get splashed, then i went up onto a smaller rock about 20 feet offshore to get the following image sequence: One of the smaller raccoons had trouble getting across the water, but after a few tries, the water went low enough for him to waddle across quickly. Then I waded back, and the tide was just that much higher.

Views of her new gates: What's the chunky hanging down off her stbd bow? A buffer for the slide raft to push up along side for when the raft is deployed. When the raft is deployed, there are lines that are connected to the ship that are used to bowse in the raft so it doesn't move around. When I participated in the Quinsam ESS deployment in 2010, there was no frame underneath the rubbing strake, so the raft actually was pushed up against the hull of the ship, underneath the rubbing strake.

Views of the Howe Sound Queen on a Saturday morning, September 3, 2011. Views of her new gates: If you can notice, the MV HOWE SOUND QUEEN has the same kind of rounded rub rail our KDT ferries have on their sides. Rounded rub rail on the side of the MV SALISH. That's one of her two rescue boats ready for action when needed.
