:)in reply to swartz bay dreaming, not just my childhood, but my earlier working life included both Queens of Saanich,Esquimalt also Sydney, and a good lot of the Spauldings design era! It is like the nazi ovens to watch the disposal of all these pieces of my past! mrdot.

I think the 'Esquimalt's fate is more merciful than the Queen of Sidney's. At least this death is cleaner and faster.

The QofE will become something useful again, and a lot of her equipment will find new uses the original designers wouldn't have thought of in their wildest dreams.

X3 I'm not too disappointed in the ending of the Queen of Esquimalt either. Most things have to come to an end eventually... only a very very small percentage of boats can be preserved for future generations. Like Neil said, she's being recycled into something useful again. What's the other better choice?

:)I suspose another way of looking at it is a quick death is preferable, although I don't know if Henry the eight's unfortunate wives would agree! the recycling thing sounds admirable, but still a smack at the heritage aspect of our past ferry service. :'(mrdot.

Wow thanks very much for those pics! One can see the cutters started attacking the forward end first as the bridge is gone in those photos. Funny to see the curtains stilll hanging in the cafeteria and buffet lounge.

Why did they that to this ship? MR Hahn could have used it to store his BIG FAT PAYCHECKS!
I remember crossing the Straight of Georgia many times on the Old Esquimalt, Going through Active Pass, to Tsawwassen and on other routs.

:)as I have commented on flickr, even in expo colours, these boats looked better than in pvte. ent. slug livery! I guess the mexicans are a little more earth friendly than the allung beach gang! :'(mrdot.

I wonder if they will turn her into a barge? Or is that even worth it?

I wonder if they will turn her into a barge? Or is that even worth it? She's already been scrapped. When a ship is scrapped, that means they delete its existence. Entirely. So unless they only removed her superstructure, then there's nothing to turn into a barge, but since we've been told that she's scrapped, we assume she's 100% gone.

You are so right unfortunately, she has been 100% cut up for scrap. I remember many trips aboard her, before the "lifting" and after... sad, but I guess an inevitable end for her and the many ships before her on the west coast....

Newly Painted V-class ( Queen of Esquimalt) at Tsawwassen Terminal's berth 1 - 11 January 1985. This vessel would have just received its Expo livery, and has not yet had the Expo 86 logo placed on its funnel. I am pretty much certain that this is the Esquimalt. Note the ventilators sticking out above the aft end of the Sun Deck restaurant. I know that this is not the Saanich (see reply 169). © WCK-JST - Fujichrome 85-05-32 - Nikon-VueScan by Wett Coast, on Flickr

Another way to confirm that this is in fact the Queen of Esquimalt, is the black ladder at the port side aft end of Deck 6. This was a unique feature to only the Esquimalt which I only just realized today.

Google Earth has updated its image of Ensenada. June 17, 2011, to be exact. One year ago, we see the ILLAHEE, NISQUALLY, and QUINAULT in Ensenada. The Steel-Electrics are gone, now. This time, we see most likely the QUEEN OF ESQUIMALT about to allow cutters aboard for the closing chapter of her life.
