Great Photos everyone! It is really neat to see a ship go through the years of modification and paint schemes. I would have to agree that the Vancouver's horn is the best sounding of all the V Class, especially the echo.

Great 1989 shot Mirrlees. Looked like Langdale for a second. The angle makes it look more of a desolate location.

Great shots Mirrlees. Strangely, she seems to have similar rust patterns to the ones on the Queen of Esquimalt on her port side.
I'm just a little confused though. Are you sure that 1989 scene isn't at Langdale? I wouldn't be able to state where the Vancouver was in 1989, but the background scenery and the angle of the birth look a lot like Langdale.

I have to agree that this looks a bit like Langdale, but it isn't. At the time (1989) the Vancouver and its 3 V class twins were providing the backbone of service on route 1. Also, to my knowledge the Vancouver has never worked route 3. Looking at this shot, the Vancouver is in berth 1 @ Swartz Bay. Recall that berth 1 is located at the north-west end of the terminal , and ships using it will have there bows pointed toward the south east shoreline of Salt Spring. That is, in fact, the land that you see in the distance. Winter view of the Vancouver en route to Swartz bay just south-west of Active Pass - c 1981 or 82 DOT photo ©

Those rust stains are from the steel wingwalls at Tsawwassen. Now that the Alberni is based there she's starting to get that stain as well. I assure you Mill Bay, that is Swartz Bay I was waiting for the Queen of Tsawwassen she was doing Route 5 that Summer.

I was looking at some photos I took at Langdale's Berth 1 last summer (example: i90.photobucket.com/albums/k268/wetcoastkidjst/Big%20Double%20Enders/0a120e74-jst.jpg). It turns out that the back drop there is really very much different than that at Swartz Bay's Berth 1. They are not even close. Someone may want to use their camera at both locations to get comparitive photos. Mirrlees 1989 photo of the Vancouver is at Swartz, no doubt about it.

This tribute to the Q of Vancouver is missing photos from its beginning at Burrard Dry Dock, North Vancouver. The Vancouver was the only one of the 'Seven Sisters' to be built on the Mainland. All the rest were built at VMD in Victoria. I was not on hand to take pictures myself, as I was just six years old at the time. Fortunately others with cameras were there. Some of the photos obtained are now available online from the website of the North Vancouver Museum & Archives www.dnv.org/nvma/. Here is a sampling... Another very early photo of the City of Vancouver. The flags and and people everywhere suggest that this was her inaugural sailing... 1962 Stan V. Wright post card; photo by J. L. Gibbons - DOT collection

In the picture of Vancouver, it's interesting to see people standing above the bridge.

I think it's because it's the maiden voyage or some sort of special event.

Here's photos of one of the last times the Queen of Vancouver saw Horseshoe Bay. The Queen of Oak Bay had broken down, but I can't quite remember why the Vancouver was brought in instead of using a C-Class. These are from July 2006. I was standing aboard the Queen of Surrey for this photo, and you can see the Queen of Esquimalt sailing to Langdale way in the background. An extremely rare sight to see two V's from Horseshoe Bay.

Here's a 2 part YouTube drama, set on the Q-Vancouver.
I'm assuming that some of you might have seen it....but I can't remember seeing it posted on this forum yet. If it has already been posted, sorry. If not, enjoy:
Part 1:
Part 2:
ps: this is from the same YouTube account as the guy who has some galley videos of the QotN.

Thanks for posting those two, Mr. Horn, I'm glad it was posted finally for those who haven't seen it yet. I really like the production quality, it adds a feel to the ferries rarely expressed. - Chris: That was interesting, and I'm thankful for the guy documenting it, but can you remind me how many knots they were travelling at, I can't seem to remember. I love how they would have arrived 2 hours earlier if they had taken the next sailing an hour later, talk about a time warp.

I guess the first images I have of the Queen of Vancouver were taken 40 years ago to nearing the end. It has been a good run.

She is currently residing in Berth 1 at Tsawwassen. She will see some service as Tsawwassen's No. 2 boat on route 1 over the Christmas holiday, and then she will be retired and sold. There will be a retirement ceremony for employees and retired crew members at some point in the new year.
Welcome to the forum!

Why is route #1 the only route that the Vs were used on that did not require an amended schedule( even the old Qof E used an amended schedule on route#3 the shortest of the 'major" routes)9.7nautical miles
