Well, I've always had some reservations about Mr Hahn's tenure at the helm of BC Ferries, but I never thought of connecting him to the state of the San Mateo...

Neil here has a hatered for Hahn but that's nothing new. I didn't care for his management style, but Hahn is gone. Let it go. 'Neil here' can speak for himself, and he most assuredly has no 'hatered' (sic) for David Hahn. He has been known to say some kind words on occasion about our departed Admiral. Second point, also nothing to do with the Queen of Sidney. (Sorry) "Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it". No matter what we think about the stories, and please let's not do either here, the lessons of the fastcats and David Hahn's tenure are very worthwhile studies in determining how we want to do ferries now and in the future. "Let it go", and forget it, at your peril. mrdot's cranky references simply point out how fresh a story is, tiresome though you might find it, from your point of view. Finally. My blood pressure went up some when I saw on the TV news that the public might be on the hook for the precautionary clean up of the Queen of Sidney junkyard. I saw the owner the other night, all smiles and chuckles at the notion his 'salvage operation' might pose any danger to the river. His conduct in letting all those boats sit and rot and possibly present a hazard to navigation, not to mention the danger of leaking oil, is disgraceful, and has been for a long time. Nail his butt for every penny of the work.

In regards to Hahn, I don't consider the perpetual referencing of him to everything to be tiresome... Hahn is just a bad dream that caused shaking and cold sweats. He's gone, and time to move on. Perpetually referencing him isn't going to do anyone much good. The lessons are there to read, and learn from. If this isn't self-contradiction, I don't know what is... just be done with him. Find somebody else to complain about, like the bloke who owns this 'salvage operation'.... Mr. Tapp, I think his name is.

Here's that video I mentioned. The forum was down late last night, so I couldn't post it. Here's a link to the video in High Quality on YouTube:

:)perhaps linking the derilect sidney & san mateao to hahn is a bit dumb on my part, but your point on the memory of these wreck scenes and marine junk sites is a very valid point, in my shipwatchin many images come to mind like the forlorn ss united states often depicted in her present delapitated state, and their are many other examples, the images to keep are the ones that depict them in their glory, in their working lives! :)mrdot.

The floods really seem to have damaged the wooden walkways to the ship. The San Mateo's situation appears to have gotten worse, again... I'm looking forward to the day the Sidney gets scrapped, as i'm tired of seeing her rust away on the river; and who knows what could've been leaking out of the ship too.
The BC Libs had plenty of time to deal with this before, they are doing it now to look good leading up to the election.

Would just like to point out that the "Walkways" leading up to the ship, but are now dangling in the water, are actually what used to be the ramps leading up to the platform decks on. the Sidney. When we toured her in 2005, the two ramps were setup to cross over the bow of the San Mateo, and on to the Sidney. They were originally from the aft end of the platform deck. The Forward ramps are still intact at least...

I think it is dumb for people to buy the Sidney and just let it sit there and rot. I dont know what is with these people. Might as well have just taken her to india to be scrapped.

You're making it sound like it's that simple; sadly, it's not. When bought originally, the ship was to be turned into a floating restaurant or tourist attraction. One of the original partners in that deal shortly fell ill and ended up having to use his money to pay for his medical bills. After that, the remaining partners didn't have enough money to do anything with the ship, so it was sold and ended up sitting in Silverdale. The owner planned to live on the ship, but couldn't bring up the funds to get it secure enough to live on, being subject to the pressures of the river and the constant vandalism by lowlifes. To take her to India (or anywhere) at this point, it would mean refitting her a ton to get her seaworthy, then they'd have to raise the millions of dollars required to hire tugs and crews to tow her over, or a heavy lift ship to do the same.

What a lot of nonsense. (Not you, but the owner) People who buy old ferries seem to have one thing in common- a lack of connection to reality. Rod Mickleburgh has an article in today's Globe on the ' Sidney graveyard and the general problem with derelict boats on our shoreline. He's a bit over the top in his characterization of the ' Sidney when he calls her the "grand old ferry that ruled the main route between Vancouver and Victoria for forty years", but I'm sure that's what left of her tired old spirit would appreciate the kind words.

:)maybe not entirely correct, in his desc. but this ferry was the first vessel in wacky' s newly created BC ferries, launched by mrs. bennet, and what a humiliating retirement for this pioneer vessel! and while I'm at it what does a stena line funnel belong on a west coast forum header, unless their awful record in our pacific northwest waters is to be remembered!

Stena does indeed belong on a West Coast forum header; they run ferries, which is the subject of the forum, and they run on the West Coast..... of Europe... but still the West Coast! ;D

Yes, he's certainly the treat of the week, and when you hear him talking about taking his case to the Queen, it's apparent that there are some other factors at play here that make compliance and responsibility even more unlikely. bc.ctvnews.ca/property-owner-refuses-to-pay-boat-cleanup-costs-1.862881

Even though she's just an old ferry, there must be some authority attached to the name.

Another article about the mistreatment of our retired vessels. The Province is calling on BC Ferries to be responsible about who they sell their ships too. Personally, I don't see this changing, but it could prevent BC's Coast and Rivers from becoming a Ferry Graveyard. bc.ctvnews.ca/b-c-wants-action-to-prevent-further-ferry-dumping-1.886170This actually brings a thought to my mind that has been done with other former vessels. The Langdale Queen for example. Why hasn't somebody got the idea to sell the superstructure of say one of the 'V' Class vessels for scrap leaving the Hull to be used as a barge? It's been done before, and somebody ought to have need for a barge. Just a thought.

The Queen of Sidney appears to be developing quite a visible list. She's tilting to the South, the same way that the San Mateo is listing. No pictures, as I didn't bring my camera.
The list, if I'm remembering right, should be along the lines of ten or fifteen degrees. I might drop by tonight under the cover of the stars if it isn't raining, to test out my camera's nighttime photography abilities onsite. I would have the pictures ready tomorrow.

Didnt end up getting down there; it's started raining in Maple Ridge. Maybe tomorrow... Or the next night... Hmmm...
