...and small ferries seem to be in surplus lately around here. Particularly average-speed run-of-the-mill ferries, unfortunately.

As seen at the Gabriola museum, on June 4, 2011. A drawing of the MV Westwood. - she was Gabriola's ferry during the early 1970's (back when the Bruins were winning Stanley Cups)

The Campbell River waterfront has a display of images of typical marine traffic. Included is a picture of the post-BCF Albert J. Savoie.

The ex-' Savoie is for sale by Harlow Marine Int'l for a mere $199,500. Bet we could get it for one eighty. That means if we get all 376 forum members to chip in a mere $479 each, we could have ourselves a ferry. Haul mrdot out of retirement, gather all the mariners and soon-to-be mariners on the Forum for crew, and we could have some real fan outings. Get some pastel blue paint, find some old BC Ferries carpet, paint a dogwood on the stack... For fun, we could take her up to Powell River and challenge the ' Chilliwack to a drag. We'd probably win. And we could always dock her beside the ' Sidney and the San Mateo... apparently that doesn't cost anything. Check your bank accounts, lads.

Would you be wanting to borrow our ship from time to time to take your Impala from North Delta (we could actually put-in at any local beach) to Grassy Point on Hornby? We'd need to all agree on a name for the ship. Maybe to honour our forum's early heritage we could settle on "MV Toogabooga" or something like that. One problem would be the large cost needed to retrofit (no pun intended there) the ship for forum purposes. - For member "Mill Bay's" sake, we'd need to eliminate all potential tripping hazards. - We'd need to install a baby-grand piano for Scott. - We'd need a brig for Canadian-Viking.

That means if we get all 376 forum members to chip in a mere $479 each, we could have ourselves a ferry. For the record, I'll chip in 6000$ Haul mrdot out of retirement, gather all the mariners and soon-to-be mariners on the Forum for crew... Sign me up for Captain's apprentice! And we could always dock her beside the ' Sidney and the San Mateo... apparently that doesn't cost anything. I'm closest to Silverdale, so I could easily move in as the shore-bosun. We'll need a couple staterooms for that, and any overnighter trips. We'd need to all agree on a name for the ship. Maybe to honour our forum's early heritage we could settle on "MV Toogabooga" or something like that. If it ever happens, I'm in favour of 'Bennett Queen' One problem would be the large cost needed to retrofit (no pun intended there) the ship for forum purposes. - We'd need a brig for Canadian-Viking. I'm hoping that's a sailing brig, not my own personal solitary confinement cell...

I have heard of green roofs (the market in Coombs and the newer varieties), but this is a great idea. Coastal Cabernet and Chardonnay. If Jordan can brew beer in the bilge on the Richmond, then the precedent is already set.

OK Mr. Cheese, you've got my attention (again). Tell me about this photo of yours, because I'm interested. - When did you take it, and where was it. It looks to me like Campbell River, and it's been a few years since this ship was at Campbell River in those colours. So you must have been pretty young when you took this photo. What's the story?

I posted back in November to mention that the ex-'Savoie was for sale for $199,500, meaning that the forum could buy her for $479 per member.
She's still for sale- now at $135,000, which works out to $353.40 per member.
Anybody who wonders why old ferries don't get saved, take note. You almost have to give these things away. The Albion boats are still up for grabs, as well.

The current edition of Western Mariner has a Harlow Marine broker advert for RJ Breadner. - she's still for-sale, for $60,000.
(The Albion ferries are also still listed - no price shown)
