You know how the Queen of the Islands was based on a Quebec design. I think I found one of the original designs.

Whoa! If they used that design it would have been crazy

I think that they, unfortunately, mainly based the hull design of the QotIslands on the Quebec design. Would have been nice if it were the other way around (same superstructure instead of hull), considering that it sounds like the hull-design was the source of most of the QotI's problems (on its purpose-built route 9 (TSA-SGI), that is).

I don't get out that way very much, but was travelling along River Rd yesterday and I saw the Queen of the Islands tied up just west of the Alex Fraser Bridge. Coincidentally, it's located right next to a floating lodge that one of my best friends is a manager for. My friend's lodge (West Coast Resorts, Tasu Sound) is leaving next week to get towed up to its location in the Charlottes. I'm sure the QotI has been there thru the winter. A question: does the QotI still run at all? I didn't see that answered in this thread, but I'm figuring it doesn't and just gets towed up to the lodge location for the season. It'd be a lot of overhead and hassle to only run it for one round trip per year between Vancouver and their lodge locations.

She has no (functional) engine, she is towed.

Another shot of the Queen of the Islands, this time from August 1972. I will leave it to others to identify where the photo was taken. Note the yellow painted funnel.

You are hot indeed. So which terminal on that route?

Well Jim, I haven't been on that route since 1990, and only 2 or 3 times at most. But, looking at that angle, and remembering Little River terminal, I would roll the dice and say it's Comox. I don't remember that much land to the left at Westview. Final answer Regis

Nice picture. Looks like Westview to me, seeming it's docked stern-to, and looks like it's along the breakwater that's parallel to the berth. Final Answer.....

I agree with Chris, this is Westview at Powell River, docked-stern-in, as the ships still do there.
Texada in the background.
I don't think it's Little-River, as the land in the backgroud is too high for Cape Lazo area.

Yeah, you may indeed be correct. I shot from the hip and after looking up some aerial shots on the web, looks like I don't get that photo after all........ But hey, it's been 16 years...........

Queen of The Islands is currently moored on the Delta side of the Fraser, just west of the Alex Fraser bridge, in case anyone's interested.

Note the yellow painted funnel. Funny to see the yellow funnel with the pastel blue stripe. I'm guessing just the funnel was repainted while she was "on loan" to the Ministry of Highways?

Probably the let's say uniform of her part time job to the Ministry of Highways at the time since she was with the Comox Queen [Tenaka] at the times during the Winter I'm pretty sure. or the Summer

The Q of the Islands was on loan to the MOH at the time. Rather that repaint the whole thing they settled for just the funnel [or should I say the funnyl. The QotI came back to BCF and they restored the pastel blue thoughout. JST

How often did the Queen of the Islands get loaned out to the Ministry fleet?

I think it was only around that time in the late 60s and early 70s. To help out the Comox Queen on the PR-Comox Route

Does anyone know the specific reasons why the Queen of the Islands was retired?
My understanding (from the Gary Bannermann book) was that she had chronic engine problems, and they could never load the car-deck properly... resulting in a pronounced list. I'd tend to think those were problems that could be solved, but it seems the ship spent a fair bit of time at Deas Dock.
As always, any other info that people have would be most appreciated!
