How often did the Queen of the Islands get loaned out to the Ministry fleet? I just came across this in Ministryof Transportation and Higways Inland and Coastal Ferries published by the Minstry of Transportation and written by Frank A Clapp, published in 1981. On page 61 it reads: "On March 25th, 1965, after building ferry terminals at Little River near Comox and a Westview (Powell River) the Ministry placed the new 26-car ferry Comox Queen in service. Traffic on the route during the summers steadily increased and by 1969 it was necessary to put an additional ferry on the run. For this the Ministry borrowed British Columbia Ferry Corporation's Queen of the Islands and it served each summer until the Ministry obtained the Sechelt Queen from the Corporation. The 83- car ferry entered service on May 20th, 1976." Hope that helps!

Is the Queen of the Islands at Deas right now? If so, how long will she be there?

I was out that way yesterday, and it's still out on River Rd in Delta. If anyone's interested, I might be able to snap some photos tomorrow or something.

Queen of the Islands is no longer tied up at the aforementioned location in Delta near the Alex Fraser Bridge. I passed by there on the bus on Sunday (June 8th), and she wasn't there anymore.
Anyone know where she's at now?

Anyone know where she's at now? She is a fishing lodge, run by St. John's Fishing Lodge during the summer season. Take a look at their website for more info.

It's too bad that they don't show, what the Accommodations look like at the Lodge. It would be nice to see what they have done with her inside.

Years ago a veteran crew member from Long Harbour told me that the QoTI had flooded and sank at Deas Dock during a cold snap in early 1989, due to lack of frost watch that night. Apparently BCF spent about as much floating and drying her out as they eventually got from her sale. This incident might explain the lack of engines. Anyone know if this is true?

A bit of an unusual sight; Queen of The Islands underway, albeit at the end of a tow chain. We came upon her while driving along River Road in Delta yesterday afternoon. She was heading downriver and then her escort turned and headed back the other way. A mini-excursion, perhaps? A couple of hours later we saw her berthed, stern to, immediately west of the River Road & Nordel intersection.

Thanks for those, Neil. It's so rare to see her moving these days. How do you mean stern-to? I mean is there an end loading berth near Vito there?

St.Johns Fishing Lodge(Queen of the Islands) is moored somewhere around Vancouver from approx early Oct until the middle of April. Then she is towed up the coast to be used as a base for St Johns Fising Lodge.

I understand engine problems and a terrible car deck led to her exit... at least that's what the Bannerman book said. If she would have worked well, I suspect she could have continued to operate right up to about the present day.

She was also in Deep Cove for awhile in mid-May. She has been getting around lately.

Actually she is in North Van sitting near Allied under the 2nd Narrows Bridge. I'll see if I can grab some pictures tomorrow on my way to or from work.

I always liked the QotI because of her excellent, unobstructed 270 degree views through the huge windows in her main lounge. It really was spectacular on a nice day. I remember taking her between Swartz Bay-Fulford in 1978 when we lived on Saltspring when I was 10. I thought it was cool that the funnel was right on the main outside deck-you could stand right beside it! I thought she was a neat little ship.

I agree. BCF should have done something (like some widening or anything to make her a better ferry) to keep her in service. A nice feeder ferry on the north coast run would have been good for her.

Entertaining little article in this months issue of Western Mariner, having a bit of a recollection from a crew member aboard the Queen of the Islands. When she was on builders trials, they did the "Full speed ahead, Full Helm" test. Apparently she heeled over so fast at such an alarming degree, everyone onboard thought for sure that she was going to capsize.
Oh Queen of the Islands........

She has been sold to a marina owner in North Vancouver. Source, the guy who bought it - he's staying at my park

The Queen of the Islands hasn't been self propelled since the early 1990s. She's been a fishing lodge since then. When she needs to be moved a tug comes to pull her.

"How she could be used?" is what I'd like to know. What could a ferry and a marina have in common?... ...Other than this. But seriously, what would a marina owner want her for? I guess Dane will have an answer to that soon.

A number of things a Marina owner could use her for.
-Some sort of yacht club hall, for members to meet at and discuss boats. Similar to the old Pendozi up in Kelowna
-A floating restaurant serving the North Shores best fish and chips
-Towed cruises up and down Indian Arm and Howe Sound so passengers can enjoy the view from hot tub on board
-Could be used as a breakwater to minimize the wake and wind affecting the docked boats

The QUEEN OF THE ISLANDS could also be used as a floating hostel (like what the VASHON was in 1985) during the 2010 Games. Reservations, please!
