A semi-recent eBay acquisition, step back in time to 1980, when the QPR spent the summer masquerading as the Victoria Princess. Seen here in Victoria's Inner Harbour on September 28, 1980. Photo © Wayne Hom. M/V Victoria Princess - Victoria Harbour by Michael, on Flickr I remember this - big mistake.

Thanks to the BC government of that time, in particular the stubbornness of the Transport/Highways minister Alex Fraser.

Does anyone know if Goundar shipping is going to use the QPR? She hasn't seen much service lately. I heard a rumour that the QPR was going to be scrapped, as well as the Chilliwack. I hope it's not true.

I mean, come on... at some point, you have to take off your ferry fan's hat and consider whether it's really a good idea for a 57 year old vessel with a lot of hard miles on her to be operating on the open Pacific. Your forum name is 'rustcoast'... do you celebrate rust, or do you worry about it? I know that in our neck of the woods we keep boats going long past when other jurisdictions would have retired them; I'd like to see us get away from that.

That is true, but I would rather see her at the bottom of the ocean than being scrapped. My forum name is rustcoast because I think rust makes the ships look aged, which I think is cool.

You would rather have it sink injuring the people instead of being scrapped? Well... Let's give 'rustcoast' the benefit of the doubt, and assume that he/she meant sinking it without passengers on board. Probably pretty likely. But I have to ask... what's so cool about rust? Salt water and steel have always fought a nasty battle, and rust is never a good sign. Ever look at the Coho? Incredible how her crews have kept her looking vibrant, although, it might be that her paint is an inch thick by now. Who knows. In any event, while 'laugh lines' and 'crows feet' might be attractive on people of a certain age, rust on a sea going vessel the age of the old BC Ferries boats was never a cosmetic attraction. No matter how much a fan you were.

Queen of Prince Rupert & fish boat @ entrance to Rupert Harbour. This photo shows the Rupert about nine months before it was decommissioned. It served North Coast routes from 1966 until 2009, 43 years in all. There was, of course, a few months in 1980 when she ran the Seattle - Victoria run, trying desparately to display the charm of the Princess Marguerite.
In this photo she was headed for Skidegate, Haida Gwaii. Certainly that BCFS paint scheme did not flatter her.

Sometimes I long for those days when we lived in Port Hardy, seeing her sail past the entrance to Harday Bay circa 1968.

I know the name is not-the-greatest, but it's part of QPR's history. I'm looking for other shots of the ship in 1980 (different angles, than the Port Sides we all have seen before). The one at the top of Page 32 is nice, but still Port side.

The QPR at Skidegate Landing, HG, August 87. This is a fresh scan of one of my old slides that you may have seen before.

The ex QPR (Lomaiviti Princess 1) has left Fiji and is bound for Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea. The GSL facebook page mentioned she is heading into drydock. A year or two ago, GSL had suggested the QPR and Chilliwack would also go for scrap after the Nanaimo. I guess she's hanging around a bit longer!

Looks like her old age is showing. Could the end be near for the QPR? Jeez... I sure hope so. She'll probably be much less likely to do damage as recycled steel than as a sixty year old vessel navigating the open Pacific...

Since it just got its refit I doubt it will be retired so soon after. Goundar will probably blame the drydock for this.
