Hello all. Just to let you know that inspections will determine departure date. I will be down on the vessel tomorrow and see what is going on. FerryNutSeattle, that would be a fitting send off for the LP but am certain such a grand exit will not happen and I am truly sorry about that. Provided George gets the okay it woukd be more like a get together at Deas and telling a few stories. A little BBQ wouldn't hurt but again permission is needed. We can't forget she is private owned now. And once she leaves Deas it will be a straight run to Fiji. Both the LP and George are reving to go as it costs $$$ everday. It looks more and more that I will be on the trip and if this proves to be the case I will try to send daily photos. I plan to video as much of the trip as I can and have available when I return. Not much experience in filming so please be kind. Til tomorrow, goodnight.

From a ferry-fan perspective, we love these opportunities to follow a familiar ship as she moves to a new part of the globe. But I think that it would be good for us fans to keep a good balance in our expectations for information and photos. - If we get some photos and videos after-the-fact when people return to Canada, then we should be content and thankful for that. And if there's someone on-board who has the time and interest to send occasional updates during the voyage, then that's a happy bonus for us.
Our challenge (as always) is to enjoy our hobby, while "staying out of the way" of the guys doing the ship business. There is a balance to be found and respected.

Thanks for the up-date pgold, much appreciated. Issues that arise from inspections have always been the bane of scheduling departures etc., resulting in additional costs to the owner before the ship finally gets underway. As we are now at Wednesday, is the Friday departure still in the works or not? pgold, glad to hear you may be going on the voyage, and I hope the old girl handles the open ocean well. If you could keep us posted here with the latest update after your shift today that would be appreciated. I was at Deas Marine yestereday and must say the new paint is a welcomed sight and a sign that a new life is about to become a reality. The Wheeler Transport fuel tanker truck that exited from the car deck was yet another sign of departure plans moving forward.

Thankfully no new colour scheme, the paint is the dark blue and white. Stacks are just painted dark blue, no logos.

As Mr. DOT mentioned in another thread, here is a recent photo taken of the Lomaiviti Princess.

As Mr. DOT mentioned in another thread, here is a recent photo taken of the Lomaiviti Princess. ...and from the other side, visor down. Given that she was photographed fairly recently, still rusty, one has to wonder how thoroughly she was prepared for painting. Hopefully it's not just cosmetic.

As Mr. DOT mentioned in another thread, here is a recent photo taken of the Lomaiviti Princess. The photographer is listed as Eric Sorenson... this wouldn't happen to be Global National's Washington Bureau Chief, would it?

Hello everyone, I was down on the LP yesterday and here is a lirrle update. Fijian inspections went well with a few things to do. TC inspections comming up very soon and that will determine if George can get away on Aug. 6 early a.m. As for the paint work it is basically cosmetic as she was painted at Deas and absolutely no chipping or sanding permitted while she is in the water. The whistles were tested again yesterday and I am told they sound good not sure if they were up to FerryNutSeattle's hopes or not as I was not there for that. On a personal note, George really would like me to sail with her but my kids are not too pleased. My wife says go and have one last deep sea adventure... it's been awhile... Not sure if the adventure would be for me or for her lol. It is an emotional tug of war between family and a real good friend who is like family. One more load of fuel and final stores will be onboard this week. In this regard the ex QPR is ready.

Thanks for the update pgold. The TC inspections are the ones to be concerned about as those folks can be tough to please, and that's putting it politely. As for whether or not you should personnaly make the voyage, to me that would be a no-brainer, however with the conflicting inputs from your family, I commiserate with your position If you go, I'd suspect a lengthy, bumpy trip with some unexpected challenges that might arise, but at the end of the day you wouldn't regret the decision. I'd love to go, taking the old QPR to a part of the world with azure blue seas, golden sandy beaches, warm tropical winds, friendly people, not a bad destination into which to"retire" as it were:)

:)as an original from all the way back to 1966, it will be nice to follow this new adventure from my rocking chair, in my retirement den, with all my collected memorabilla from down thru the years, and this new electronic email screen I enjoy in the cockpit of my retirement work station. This is the extent of my sailing days, I am afraid, with a few day trips with this new gold card, the extent of my voyaging on the inland salish sea! :)mrdot.

One more load of fuel and final stores will be onboard this week. In this regard the ex QPR is ready. If I were you, go on this voyage from BC to Fiji. And, like what KSC Shuttle Launch Director Michael D. Leinbach would say to the astronauts on the pad: "Have a little fun" on the journey. Space shuttle astronauts were usually away from their families for about two weeks. You would be away for at least a month. That's minute compared to what families face when a member is on ISS ALPHA as those people spend at least six months at a time up there. Add to this the long trips taken to Russia to watch them off and return. Navy sailors as well as other Department of Defense souls also face long separation from their families. If you go, we'll be thinking of you as well as the rest of the crew for a great trip. From Google Earth, here's a view of our globe and the distance between BC, Hawaii, and Fiji. The returning Canadian crew may be returning aboard an Air Pacific Boeing 747-400 on an overnight flight. Looking at the schedule, subject to change, they usually leave Nadi (NAN or NFFN) at 2200 Fiji Time and arrive Los Angeles (LAX or KLAX) early in the afternoon Pacific Time. Then, they'll connect to another airline for the flight to Vancouver (YVR or CYVR). FIJI WEATHER FROM NOAA weather.noaa.gov/weather/current/NFFN.html

It looks like the crew of the LOMAIVITI PRINCESS will need to be very careful in whatever food is remaining in the galley when they arrive at Fiji. Read this story: KFC CLOSES FIJI OUTLETS writer : RACHNA LAL 8/2/2011 All Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) lovers will be in for a surprise as all their outlets ... Now that I have nothing but time on my hands, if I made the voyage to Fiji, I'd find a cargo ship coming back to the West Coast of Canada and work my way back. May as well get paid rather that charging George Goundar the cost of an airline ticket Given the distance to travel between Canada and Fiji, one would suspect a refuelling stop in Hawaii, and perhaps the use of some sort of fuel bladders on board as those distances are well outside the normal cruising range of the ex-QPR. Also, I would greatly appreciate any updates as to whether or not August 6th is still the projected departure date or not? If August 6th is still in the works, the weather will be great for the sendoff!

Could this be an indication that a crew of BCF deck officers be on the bridge with the Fiji crew on this trans-Pacific trip? Very interesting question.

For those with any knowledge of such things, would it be likely that she would transit Active Pass on the way out to sea or go around the longer way?

If your going to sea, I believe the long way becomes the short way and the short way becomes the long way. I think that it is faster to go via the shipping lanes than active pass, if your going to the ocean, also i'm pretty sure she is no longer allowed in active pass.
Cheers,

For those with any knowledge of such things, would it be likely that she would transit Active Pass on the way out to sea or go around the longer way? It all depends on who'll be on the bridge. A routing that would take her past Tsawwassen Terminal, through Active Pass on the regular BCF route, and by Swartz Bay would allow her to say goodbye to her former BCF workmates. Then, a goodbye salute to Victoria (her birthplace) and on she goes to her new home. Passing Race Rocks, she'll say goodbye to Victoria VTS. She'll then say hello to Seattle VTS, perhaps for the first time since her 1980 stand-in for the PRINCESS MARGUERITE, and be with them on the way out on the Juan De Fuca Strait. Finally, she may be with Tofino VTS for a little bit on the Pacific until she goes out of range.
