For copyright reasons I won't share the 3D model of the Kalakala I have done. I say that because I uploaded a preliminary model of the Super Class to the SketchUp 3D Warehouse and within two weeks someone else had uploaded the same model and claimed it as their own - and further had the audacity to say they created it without giving credit. I've also had that happen to several models of school buses I've done for the 3D warehouse.
If you would like to share the photos you have of the pilothouse, I would be more than happy to see them.

i will have to scan the photos when i can get a scanner.but you have the pilothouse correct. you could put your name somewhere on the kalakala to protect the copyright, just an idea

i will have to scan the photos when i can get a scanner.but you have the pilothouse correct. i really wish i could sail it in fsx may i have permission to use the model on google for virtual sailer? I'm expecting to have the FSX version released shortly. When that happens, stay tuned to this thread. As far as Virtual Sailor, I need to investigate the add-on SDKs for it, and I'm looking into that too.

its easy to convert a sketchup modle for virtual sailer but making the boat sail accurately is the hard part

Do you actually have docks to use?

Do you actually have docks to use? I do. I've created Colman Ferry Terminal for FSX plus I'm currently working on Bremerton, as the Kalakala spent about 90% of her career on that run. Of course the terminals will reflect current appearances, primarly due to a dissapointing lack of photographic reference of Bremerton in the original terminal configuration as a major reason. I'm also working on creating every ferry in the fleet plus a number of retired ferries (Kalakala, Steel Electrics, Chippewa, Enetai and a few wood electrics)

yes, i will send a link as soon as i can get on my pc, i cant send a link with my phone. i am working on the boat.cfg to make it sail accurately. the kalakala had a cruising speed of about 17 knots and turned more like a tanker than a ferry. i have a recording of her horn if you want it.
im curious how she arrived and departed the ferry terminal, did she back out and turn around or did she sail like the current ferries?

I've also got a recording of her horn, although getting it to work in FSX is tricky. As for departing and arriving... At Colman Dock, she arrived nose-in, and cars departed through the bow. After departing Colman Dock, her master would back her out of the terminal, then do a J-turn and sail towards Bremerton. Upon arriving in Bremerton, her master would stop shy of the dock, turn around, and back in to the Bremerton dock. That's how I understood it. Unfortunately, due to limitations in FSX beyond my control, I cannot get this to be accurate.

virtual sailer dhould be easier to work with, i will send a link on how to do it, but im on my phone so i cant send it right now. the inside of the pilothouse was made of unpainted copper. the recording i have is several quick blows of her horn, do you have a recording of just one long blow?

I love the sound of her horn and how it reverberated thru the superstructure of the ferry. The SS San Mateo's whistle (sounded like an old steam train whistle also sounded awesome! I don't know which ferry's horn I like best, both ferries have cool-sounding horns.

the photos are on film, not digital. also the handle on the throttle should be wood and theinside of the pilothouse was made of polished copper, causing it to look bright in some photos and dark in others.

HistoryLink's posting of the whistles wasn't completely accurate when they were new, and I don't know if they ever fixed them. (For example, the whistle they claimed was the Vashon's was actually the... Evergreen State, I think.) EGFleet's are accurate because I was there when he was listening to the recording from which HistoryLink took them, and helped sort out which whistle belonged to which boat. *edit* Just checked HistoryLink... the Kalakala whistle is the correct one. Additionally, the one identified as the Illahee (Ed Johnson) is also the Kalakala (Bob Mattson). Klickitat (Larry Crawford) is actually the Skansonia (Ray Hughes) and the one marked as the Evergreen State (Earl Fowler) is actually the Coho (Bert Holmes). And lastly, the one identified as the Skansonia is actually Al Walker on the Iroquois.

I'm going to have to assign some sort of special function to the horn to get it to work properly and to add a means of making it functional in the 3D virtual pilothouse and the 2D panel. I've sort of taken some time away from the whole Flight Simulator Ferries project in general due to development issues, actually, and the fact I'd like to add more detail to the Kalakala. My plan will be all current vessels. Retired vessels I'm featuring, will be: Nisqually, Illahee, Quinault, Klickitat, Rhododendron, Olympic, San Diego, Willapa, Chippewa, plus a couple others.

Welcome to the club of the Ferries of Puget Sound owners! It's certainly one of the most informative and recent books on WSF out there! And I look forward seeing all those ferries on the water (pun intended)!

Sorry for being off topic but I haven't seen M/V walla walla for a while, did they retire her or was she moved to another route? The Walla Walla was laid up last fall when a propulsion motor got fried. Initial layup was to've been a couple years based on early damage reports. It's supposed to be back on the Bremerton run in a couple weeks, I gather.

Because things break on everything. I actually don't know what caused the drive motor to get fried; all I know is that she's gonna be back in service starting in April.

how did the propulsion motor get fried, she was running fine last time I was on her. She was in layup for annual maintenance and workers were removing paint overspray on the drive motor, when an electrical short fried the motor. www.wsdot.wa.gov/News/2012/11/09_WallaWallaFerry.htm
