Some time today (or maybe it was yesterday) I breezed on by the 4000 mark without even noticing. This reminds me of my car. I have actually yet to see the numbers click over from 99,999 to 100,000. Perhaps I will be watching here on the WCFF when my count reaches 5000.

So apparently this forum has been around for ten years, as you can see from the header at top. That's pretty cool. Has it always been on this website or was it on another forum website originally?
And can I go back thru the archives to 2003 and see what people were talking about back then? That would be really interesting.

Here's a link to a series of comments on a ferry photo, on one of those ferry protest FaceBook groups: I think it illustrates the niche that we have here at WCFF. In general terms, we care about ferry system sustainability issues, coastal communities issues, Government transportation policy issues, ship operational issues, and we also simply like the ships which include their history and the experience of riding them. HERE 'Amen', Mr. Horn. I would just add a wee addition to your list. For those WCFF members who have worked on any of the ships over the course of BC Ferries history, some, perhaps many of the issues we discuss on this forum take on somewhat of a 'personal' note because these ships were our work place and in some cases our workplace and our home for periods of time many crew members becoming 'family'. Witnessing the state of BCF operations and mismanagement by the present government, the negative fallout does take on a more personal touch. That said, I am continually impressed by the insightful knowledge, the willingness to share passionate opinions, create civil debate(s) on the wide variety of topics that interest us in this forum in a manner above and beyond the quality witnessed on other screens of social media.

HEREI can't say that I would take issue with people who don't think C class ferries are lovely to look at. Granted they look better than the forward end of the NorAd, but that is not saying much.

Some of you may have noticed that on Saturday evening, the entire forum was honouring the upcoming departure of the quirky old ferry "Queen of Chilliwack."
We used the forum's censored-word function to change every instance of the word "Ferry" to instead be "Chilliwack." This covered the entire forum, which is much larger than just the Baynes Sound Connector thread.
Were the Washington ferries posters ok with this? Were the people interested in the Alaska ferries ok with this? I assume so.
It's similar to when a hockey player's number is retired, and all players wear his number & name for the warm-up for that night's game. A tribute.
We'll sort of miss the Chilliwack - she provided lots of interesting discussion and interesting riding experiences. Not the kind of ride we'd want every day, but interesting as a unique experience.
Meanwhile, enjoy participating in the various threads for the approximately 66 separate active ship threads for the 3 main systems, and the many other threads for retired and active ships. All of them are now back to normal.
Thanks for having fun with us.

All of them are now back to normal. Until the day the CHILLIWACK sails from the Fraser for the last time. Do the same thing that day. Even though the spelling of this famous food item may be different, let's all eat a hearty bowl of chili that night as well as a toast to the ship's crew wishing them for a safe passage across the Pacific to her new home. It's a long trip without a sight of land, unless they pass close to Hawaii or other islands en route.

It's a long trip without a sight of land, unless they pass close to Hawaii or other islands en route. Good idea for the 'Chili' send-off. While I would have gladly jumped at the chance to do the Pacific crossing to Fiji on the venerable old 'QPR', my enthusiasm for doing a similar crossing on the 'Wack' is lukewarm at best. Yes, the 'Wack' crossed the Atlantic on her way here but crossing the Pacific expanse at this time of year is another adventure. May St. Christopher bless this passage with " Fair Winds and Following Seas".

In honour of Curtis' re-certification as "having ridden every current vessel in the fleet" today on Salish Raven, I reintroduce the topic of a personal ferry-slam:
I used to have my ferry-slam certificate (having traveled on all the current ships of the BCF fleet), but the arrival of the Salish triples has de-certified me. - I need to get my Raven.
Who here, besides the intrepid Curtis, has a valid "ridden every ship in the current fleet" claim?
Who, like me, is only 1 or 2 ships off?
Who's got the WSF equivalent?

I had the slam up until the Salish trio arrived. I need to ride the Orca and the Raven in order to "renew my certificate".

As far as WSF goes, I've just about done it all: I've ridden every vessel in the current fleet on at least two separate occasions (and most of them far more than that), and I've also visited every WSF terminal. As far as BCF goes, I'm working my way towards the "ridden every ship in the current fleet" claim. -I've ridden every current major vessel except the Coquitlam, which I'm hoping to check off my list in November during her Route 30 stint. -I'm 10 for 22 on the current minor/intermediate fleet. That's my ferry-nerd resume...

I can say that I have done the grand slam with Blackball's current fleet (though probably not their retired fleet).
In this 'slam' department I am admittedly rather inept ... I have missed so many boats over the years ... Currently I am 1 for 3 with the "Queen of Doors" class and I don't expect that to change in any great rush. I have also never been aboard the C Inspiration, though I have tried. There are a few minors that I have yet to get on board, the Kuper being an example. I have also never been on board the Nimpkish, though I had hoped to remedy that earlier this summer. Some things are not meant to be, and I did do the Uchuck III and that's probably better anyways ...
Regrets about my past failures: 1 - Never got a ride on the Suzie Q. How bad was that? 2 - Never got on board any of the Fast Cats, though I did try. Some say that I did not miss anything, but I would have liked to form my own opinion about that ... 3 - Never rode the Princess Marguerite II in all those years she steamed back & forth between Seattle & Victoria. Again, how bad was that ...
I am virtually certain that there were other misses ...

Again, how bad was that I share these three regrets. However, for the Sunshine Coast Queen, I was only 8 years old when the Coquitlam/Cowichan came online, which moved some B's to Langdale. So I was just a kid, and had no chance to chart my own course. But my total miss on the FastCats, and my miss on the Marguerite's last years are big regrets for me.

For me, this is where I stand on ferries ridden, or at least stepped aboard (while in service, or at the beginning of a service life):
WSF: I have ridden on every vessel in the current fleet. Past vessels include the four steel electrics (Illahee, Klickitat, Nisqually, Quinault), Vashon, Rhododendron, Olympic, Kulshan, Hiyu, Evergreen State, and Klahowya. I did not ever ride on any of WSF's passenger only ferries. I should have done Chinook and Snohomish while they were in service. That is a minor regret.
Blackball: I have ridden Coho quite a number of times
AMHS: I've never ridden any of the Alaska Ferries, but I did go to the open ship event they held on board Kennicott in Bellingham a few years ago. That was to celebrate AMHS's 50th anniversary. So, I guess I can say I've been aboard one of them.
BC Ferries current fleet: Klitsa Tachek Bowen Queen Mayne Queen Powell River Queen Howe Sound Queen Skeena Queen Queen of Cumberland Island Sky Salish Raven Northern Expedition (open ship event in 2009 - never rode the vessel, just went to the open ship) Queen of New Westminster Queen of Alberni Queen of Coquitlam Queen of Cowichan Queen of Oak Bay Queen of Surrey Coastal Celebration Coastal Inspiration Coastal Renaissance Spirit of British Columbia Spirit of Vancouver Island
BC Ferries retired fleet: Mill Bay Queen of Tsawwassen Queen of Burnaby Queen of Nanaimo Queen of Saanich Queen of Vancouver Queen of Victoria Pacificat Explorer (open ship event only) Pacificat Discovery
That's about it for our Northwest ferries. I still have quite a few BC Ferries to add to my list.

Brandon (Kahloke)... what about your county vessels, and the Herron Island ferry? Very good point: I did not add in the various ferries I have ridden in other parts of the continent, or even other counties in Washington. For those, here we go: WSDOT: the Keller ferry, which is operated directly by the state DOT, but not part of Washington State Ferries. I rode on the new vessel there a few years ago, MV Sanpoil. Pierce County Ferries: I have ridden on both Christine Anderson and Steilacoom II Wahkiakum County Ferry: another Columbia River crossing. This one is on the lower Columbia, between Astoria and Longview. I have ridden on both the Wahkiakum, and her replacement, Oscar B. CALTRANS: This California agency runs ferries in the Sacramento Delta. I have ridden on the Real McCoy II, a vessel built in Freeland, WA, btw. And, I rode on their little cable ferry, J-Mack. Heading east, I took a couple of ferries in New Brunswick. One is the Hopper II, operated by East Coast Ferries LTD. It runs between Campobello Island and Deer Island in the summers. The other is Deer Island Princess II, operated by the New Brunswick Provincial Government. A bit north of there, I rode on MV Confederation from PEI to Nova Scotia Then, from Nova Scotia to Portland, Maine, I got a chance to experience Nova Star during its brief existence. Finally, I have ridden a couple of the Steamship Authority Ferries from Woods Hole to Martha's Vineyard in Massachussetts: Island Home and Nantucket I think that's about it for me on ferries, at least car ferries. If we are counting passenger-only ferries, too, then that list grows.

At one point I had been on every BC Ferry except the Kwuna. That has changed over the years and now there are several of them that I haven't been on yet. Here is a list of the ones I have been on by company.
BC Ferries current fleet: Spirit of British Columbia Spirit of Vancouver Island Coastal Inspiration Coastal Renaissance Queen of New Westminster Queen of Oak Bay Queen of Surrey Queen of Cowichan Queen of Coquitlam Queen of Alberni Northern Adventure Baynes Sound Connector Bowen Queen Mayne Queen Powell River Queen Howe Sound Queen Nimpkish Quinitsa Quinsam Klitsa Kahloke Tachek Quadra Queen II North Island Princess Skeena Queen Queen of Cumberland Queen of Capilano
BC Ferries retired fleet: Queen of Sidney Queen of Tsawwassen Queen of Burnaby Queen of Nanaimo Queen of Victoria Queen of Vancouver Queen of Saanich Queen of Esquimalt Pacificat Explorer Pacificat Discovery Queen of the North Queen of Prince Rupert Queen of Chilliwack Mill Bay Tenaka Albert J Savoie Salt Spring Queen Vesuvius Queen
Other non BC Ferries in Canada: Current: Osprey 2000 Balfour Usk Ferry Lytton Ferry Harrop Ferry Arrow Park Ferry Needles Ferry
Retired: Anscomb Garibaldi II Kulleet Klatawa Vancouver Island Princess Princess Marguerite (II) Crown Princess Victoria Omineca Princess
Washington State Ferries current fleet: I have rode on every vessel
Washington State Ferries retired fleet: Illahee Klickitat Nisqually Quinault Vashon Rhododendron Olympic Kulshan Hiyu Evergreen State Klahowya Tyee Chinook Snohomish Martha S (Keller ferry operated by WSDOT)
Pierce County Ferries current fleet: Christine Anderson Steilacoom II
Pierce County Ferries retired fleet: Steilacoom
Blackball: Coho
Alaska State Ferries: Aurora Columbia Malaspina Matanuska
I think that is all the ferries I have been on to date although I may be missing a few. Saturday I am off the Maine and I am planning to get more than a few ferries off my list on my first visit to the East Coast. Some of them include: Rockland to Vinalhaven, Portland to Peaks Island and Lincolnville to Islesboro just to name a few.

Since July 2003, Ferries of British Columbia, later West Coast Ferries Forum, has brought those passionate for BC Ferries, Washington State Ferries, and Alaska Marine Highway System together.
Past, present, and future, this forum has and will continue to provide a place to discuss and share all things "ferry". While this forum has been the medium that brought us together, it's each and every one of you who made it into a well-respected, welcoming community. While communication continues to evolve at a rapid pace, our forum continues to remain the go-to location for those interested in marine transportation on the west coast of North America - thanks to you.
On behalf of John and I, our moderators, and our social media team - we thank each and every one of you for an incredible fifteen years.
Here’s to many more!
