Tsawwassen - Swartz Bay - Sunday, September 22
Due to a regulatory issue, the Queen of New Westminster will be removed from service on Sunday, September 22 on the Tsawwassen - Swartz Bay route. Therefore, the 12 pm and 4 pm sailings from Tsawwassen and 2 pm and 6 pm sailings from Swartz Bay will be cancelled.
In order to provide the capacity to meet anticipated demands on this route, the Coastal Celebration will provide additional sailings, departing Swartz Bay at 8 pm and Tsawwassen at 10 pm. Customers with confirmed reservations on the cancelled sailings will be notified and re-booked on other sailings.
I wonder what the regulatory issue is? Not enough crew possibly?

No wonder all the route 1 vessels are running 30 minutes late today (as I sit at Swartz Bay the fourth car back from making it on board the 2000 departure).

The Modified Route 7 Schedule has been approved and will come into effect October 2nd. The day now starts an hour earlier and ends an hour later. The crossing time is now 60 Minutes as well. Guess that means the Queen of Chilliwack's late streak will end at 21 Days. *knock on wood. Link: www.bcferries.com/bcfservicenotice?id=827593

Wow, I think that the 4:15am start sets a new record for BC Ferries, for earliest scheduled route-sailing. - other than North & Mid Coast & Haida Gwaii long voyages - other than the 1992 Route-2 summer all-night-long experiment.

oh that's cool more time on the Wack lol! It's the same amount of time you would've gotten anyhow, now the schedule just matches the actual crossing time.

Did BC Ferries make mistake because the sailing time is 5 minutes? Or is there a deadhead trip back to Saltery Bay after the 11:10 pm sailing from Saltery bay to Earls Cove?

Yeah, the Chilliwack at the end of the night can run at Warp Speed since there is hardly anyone aboard... Seriously though, that's my bad. Editing an elaborate post like that on a mobile device is a tedeious job and prone to mistakes.

The very early & late sailings will likely attract few customers. Watch out - this route will soon be reduced to seven round trips per day.
It appears they are still allowing for a bit of a lay-over in the afternoon between shifts. Perhaps they should eliminate that.

They really should eliminate that stupid layover! I can't believe they have a layover seeing that route is part of highway 101 and in between the layovers is like 3 hours!

Big wind storm is forecast for this afternoon in the Nanaimo area. I expect there will be some ferry sailing cancellations for many of the Georgia Strait routes and nearby minor routes.
How many ferries will be cancelled today, before some people complain? The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind. The answer is blowing in the wind.

And the Queen of Burnaby has cancelled her next round-trip for today.

So the 3:00pm SOBC from Tsawwassen is cancelled due to winds and same with the 3:10pm from Horseshoe Bay but there is no service notice about the Horseshoe Bay cancellation. But why wouldent the 3:00pm out of Swartz Bay or the 4pm out of Tsawwassen be cancelled too?? The 3:15pm from Comox and the 5:15pm from Powell River is also cancelled!

An update as of 3:50pm on the BC Ferries site says that Quadra to Cortes sailings by the Kahloke have been cancelled. I knew they never should have put a k-barge on that run. (Update as of 4:10: Someone has figured out that Tenaka is on the run. Well done.)

It was pretty calm last week.

So I guess last Sunday when it was supposed to be really nasty out and I went for a ride on the Coho and then Rt 1 hoping for a good "rough ride" I should have postponed that trip until this Sunday. It was pretty calm last week. I was aboard the 2 PM sailing from Swartz Bay to Tsawwassen ( QoNWM) and I don't think the winds or seas were bad enough to warrant cancellations. I am at somewhat of a loss to understand why they tied up the SoBC at 3:00 PM at Tsawwassen, yet the Alberni departed Tsawwassen ~3:30, bound for Duke Point. What I do understand is that some vessels present a fair bit more 'sail' to the wind then do others, making them more difficult to handle, especially as regards getting into & backing out of Tsawwassen. I also understand that it is the ship's captain who has the final say on whether or not that ship sails. I also believe that 'corporate liability concerns' in this day & age result in sailings being cancelled where in the same conditions in the past a ship would have sailed.

I wondered that why the SOVI sailed and I took the 3:15pm once to Duke Point during a windstorm on the Coquitlam because the 3pm SOBC was cancelled!

I was wondering - re the cancellations yesterday - if anyone recalls this many sailings (or any sailings) being cancelled in a September. I know it happens often in December (I lived it front and centre last year about the 21 or so of December last year - sat at Swartz Bay from about 9am to 3pm).
I wonder if a previous poster above is right: the liability issues make them more guarded and cautious. I remember the story I heard from my dad about a trip in about Dec 91 from Swartz to Tsawwassen; the ship got so close to Tsawassen, and had to go all the way back to Swartz. People were angry because they were coming over for a Montreal @ Vancouver Canucks game, and they were ripping up their tickets as they were not going to get there. Dad had to grab a hotel/motel in Vic for the night.
I've got to say the 1 800 # for BC Ferries yesterday was "sad". The website was showing the Tsaw route to Swartz as still offering the 6pm sailing; I tried calling to see if this was right (as I wanted to go to Vic - had been planning it, but got running behind yesterday), and the phone system after punching 1 for this 0 for that (or whatever), said something like...... the Phone lines are too busy, please call back at another time .....; why would they not have at least an option for messages, if they aren't going to have some sort of phone queue?
My thoughts: they get too many calls and don't want to answer them. (if they get so many calls and too many messages, then it says they aren't giving the right info out through other means). Hopefully my post re the phones makes sense. It was pitiful to not get a live agent or an option to leave a message yesterday. I think I will be emailing them on this. (then again, I might not bother!). They refer you to the website (when they say that no agent is available). But the website was not giving me the answer a live agent would. I think sometimes, organizations think the web is the be all and end all. It's kind of like one time I called one credit card or bank call centre on something that I could not get an answer from their online platform (it's something that would only show behind the scenes). After getting my answer, the agent said to me (probably because they are forced to read the script), .....in future, try our website for self service ... eventhough I had told them I use it 99percent of the time.

One other thing to consider was that the forecast was much worse than the actual storm. The US Forecasting model had the storm coming in over southern Vancouver Island which would have produced hurricane force winds. Instead, the storm went north so the impact of the winds was much less. The canceled sailings might have been judged off of the forecast.

The reservation page is showing the SOVI out of service this long weekend. I think it pretty stupid being it is a long weekend. The Celebration is number 1 and it shows the Renaissance as number 2 out of Swartz Bay but I thought the Rennia was on route 2 for Thanksgiving but not according the reservations page she aint.

Apparently the Powell River Queen has had to cancel all remaining sailings today due to mechanical problems. Also the elevator on the Queen of Chilliwack is out of service.

Anyone know which shipyard the Quinsam is going to? Just Nanaimo Shipyards? Nanaimo Shipyards' capacity is roughly that of the Kahloke. They usually send these ships down to EGD.
