Gawd, I despise this new system. I just gave up trying to do a post because I couldn't figure out how to properly quote just part of a previous post... something that was straightforward before the downgrade. If you're having trouble figuring out how to do something that you used to do in V4.5, then just post your question in this thread and one of the younger members/staff will be happy to help you out. Now, to solve your issue... When you click the "Quote" button and go into the "Create Post" page, you can simply remove whatever text you don't want that's inside the box containing the quote. If you are used to using the old style of creating a post, just click on the "BBCode" tab at the bottom of the screen. ...the implication being that the problem isn't so much with the system, but with older members who can't figure it out. I tried to "simply remove whatever text" I didn't want from the quote, and it didn't do what I wanted it to. I don't claim to have any facility with computers, but you need to recognize that there are a fair number of us who simply don't like the way this this works or looks. Since change for the sake of change is almost a freakin' religion these days, I guess we'll just have to adapt.

I find it is easily to post because of the visual. I find it easy to navigate forum. The only problems, I have with new upgrade is quoting some of the post, the no spell check, the no preview your posts, and the wrong page in thread. I have notice the wrong page in the threads is happening less frequently since the first week of the upgrade. e

There are some computer programs around that are just disasters, without the main problem being greybeards who can't use them properly. Tonight's News Hour on Global highlighted the $180 million dollar data entry system for the provincial Ministry of Children and Families, which the province is threatening to implement in other ministries. The system is riddled with problems, making data difficult to input and difficult to retrieve, and causing difficulties for social workers tracking at risk clients. The very well respected advocate for children, Mary Ellen Turpel Lafond, is one of its strongest critics. $180 million in taxpayers' money, probably going to some techno-geek software corporation that wouldn't know a child with fetal alcohol syndrome from an aardvark.
I doubt that Proboards spent anything like that for our downgrade. Beware techies bearing gifts of cyber 'progress'.

I see that we have also lost Reply #'s for each subsequent posting in a thread. I found those to be useful. We should get those back, or at least let PB's know that discontinuing them was a bad move.

The IOS updates seem to be good excluding apple maps.

Where at the top of very post? Yes. Along the top of the post, they used to say Reply #XXX. I can't access Wayback Machine to specific threads to show you unfortunately, but I can assure you this is true. Unless you don't believe me and require proof. Then you are out of luck.

RE the Queen of the North sinking thread: PS: What has become of the first year's posts in this thread (March 2006 to May 2007 is missing)? I just checked, and Yes, the whole first year of posts is missing. Thanks Jim for pointing it out, I hadn't noticed it yet. But that's strange and bad that it's missing. I wonder what else is missing from threads (assuming that this is a Proboards conversion issue)?

I have checked the QotN sinking thread & a couple of other long multi-page threads (e.g. C. Renaissance delivery thread) and its not, apparently, that the threads are missing, they are out of chronological order. You have to go to ~page 4 or 5 to find the first posts of the QotN sinking thread.
I don't know for sure if this is just another 'little' annoyance connected with the PB v5 'upgrade', but I expect so. I do hope that PB's can fix it, and put the reply #'s back while they are at it.

- this morning on my home computer, at 6:30am, the forum still showed banner-adverts, and the flagship photo was a blank "Red X". This used to happen from time to time for me with V4.5. I don't believe that's a V5 thing so much as something that happens every now and again.
---------------------------------------- I've found a video that summarizes this thread quite well...

How do I bring a quoted post from one thread to another? For example, I wanted to reply to ferrytraveller's post made in the News Thread, in the "New Minor Vessels" thread.
I don't know how to quote a post and bring it into another thread.

Something I have been enjoying about V5:
When one edits a post, there is an option to add a reason for that edit at the bottom. Useful.

Well, I was going to pm Steve Rosenow and take him up on his kind offer to assist me in my upgrade. I decided to try another attempt to see if I could do it myself and it linked over to the new version directly with my old username and password. Was there a bug that got fixed? I spent a great deal of time attempting to upgrade my account last month, doing exactly the same process I just did 5 minutes ago. I am ok with it. Thank you Mr Rosenow for the offer.

Something I have been enjoying about V5: When one edits a post, there is an option to add a reason for that edit at the bottom. Useful. ... but does that make up for the fact that you can't preview before you post? I don't think so. Another V5 fun fact: We are now saved from the confusion of deciding to search through the members' list alphabetically or by post count. If you're curious about how that horse race between the number six and number seven poster is going, or if you're wanting to see how many members have never actually posted... too bad. Alphabetically only. And I notice tonight, in another thread, confusion about quoting. Those old guys. Sheesh. The next bit of progress, soon to be announced by the Proboards Overlords, is AGRC, or 'Automatic Geezer Rant Control'. It will instantly detect and delete all posts by members over a certain age who complain about the technical improvements in the forums.

I recommend posting your concerns on the ProBoards Support Forum: support.proboards.com/board/28/general-v5-discussionNot to sound arrogant, but just complaining into oblivion is counter-productive and a waste of perfectly good finger-energy, that could be better spent on other things.

Alphabetically only. Believe it or not Neil, you still can view Members by Post Count. The feature is just hidden away waiting for you to discover it... Like some of the other V5 Problems They should make a video explaining where everything is hidden on pages. On the top row of the Members List you simply just click on the Name, Username, Group / Rank, Posts, Date Registered, or Last Online Columns.

The next bit of progress, soon to be announced by the Proboards Overlords, is AGRC, or 'Automatic Geezer Rant Control'. It will instantly detect and delete all posts by members over a certain age who complain about the technical improvements in the forums. The younger moderators have that new feature all ready for me, haha. But seriously, one good thing about the V5 upgrade is that it's shifted my focus and priorities in my spare-time life. After an initial weekend with V5 and the resulting frustration that I felt in those early days, I've now settled into a more mellow "I just don't care anymore" frame of mind, concerning this place. I realize that I'm the only moderator who's apologized for the problems with the V5 upgrade, or tried to express regret over the problems that this has caused some of us. So I realize that I'm in the minority among staff with my reactions to how this has all gone down. So, things that I used to fuss about on this forum, I'm not too concerned with anymore. That's a good thing, because I had been investing way too much emotional energy into this place, plus lots of my spare time. So I look forward to continuing to contribute material and comments, but not to fuss over things that ProBoards has taken away from how I used to use this forum. If that means that I use it less often or in different ways, that's ok. It's a younger group's forum now...

MileagePhoto tells me that my objections are futile. Probably true. I tell him, that his suggestion to log onto some other forum and voice my concerns is almost the definition of futility. You know that ubiquitous recorded voice that says, "Your call is important to us..." Exactly.
Curtis points out the newly convoluted path to doing something that was previously pretty much a one click procedure.
Mr Horn's conclusion that perhaps it's just better to do something else that's less annoying, is probably best. Not the best formula for the growth or even the maintenance of an online forum, but, hey, nobody has to talk about ferries.

That's a good thing, because I had been investing way too much emotional energy into this place, plus lots of my spare time. I'm glad you feel this way. I have had some humbling and sobering experiences in my personal life as of late, and have learned that this is absolutely no environment to be investing emotional energy or frustration. Especially over the most minute differences between systems. I believe that there is a lesson to be learned here. And maybe your boss will be happier So what's the result of a software upgrade? We have a divided community: a handful of members who are have taken a firm preconceived negative connotation with anything related to this upgrade; a handful of members who are annoyed but have chosen to adapt; a small collective of staff who have worked tirelessly on the implementation of this upgrade; and a silent majority. Crazy.
MileagePhoto tells me that my objections are futile. Probably true. I tell him, that his suggestion to log onto some other forum and voice my concerns is almost the definition of futility. You know that ubiquitous recorded voice that says, "Your call is important to us..." Exactly. I was trying to send you in the right direction to send your feedback to the coders, operators and owners of ProBoards. If you don't, that's your call. I'm not trying to feed you some ProBoards PR crap. In fact, if you go back a few pages, I had complaints about the Mobile App: I went on to the support forum, my concerns were rectified, the app was changed and updated.
